I'm disappointed that you skimmed over the detail of what the final stages of Thrawn's plan actually was: to use the droid starfighters wired with what amounts to a neutron bomb to kill off all the vagaari. However, the contingency programming that Dorianna activated caused the starfighters to kamikaze into the various compartment seals within the dreadnaughts, at which point the neutron bombs were flown into the openings created and detonated. The civilians were kept safe by C'baoth having ordered them confined deep inside one of the dreadnoughts because they'd disobeyed him. I know, you're trying to keep the video relatively quick, but that detail sort of illustrates that although highly professional and opposed to simply killing without a specific need, Thrawn was fully prepared to simply erase an entire people from existence to protect the Ascendency and neutralize a distaction that might prove fatal in a confrontation with the "far outsiders"

The Outbound Flight is really good at demonstrating one of Thrawn's greatest abilities: being able to accomplish great things with limited resources. For the battles we see in this book Thrawn only has a few small ships and fighters, as well as whatever gear his forces could salvage from defeated enemies. And yet he manages to defeat fleets that massively outnumber and/or outclass his own.

Well, these two battles are really different. The first one was won by advanced interdictor and jamming technology, as well as Thrawn's tactical thinking. The second one was won with the use of extensive knowledge and external assets. It was a pure strategic victory. Though it also relied on interdiction technology as well as, yet again, some form of jamming. This time "jedi jamming". The first one seems to be the most impressive. Since it's the one that relies less about stuff that Thrawn knows, but not us.

1:17 - and that is where the concept for the Imperator Class Star Destroyer came from. Palpatine was indeed worried about the threat from outside the galaxy and the Imperator was put into design and production. Note I am saying Imperator not Imperial for a reason. In the original Star Wars Cross Sections (before Disney) it was said in the opening lines for the Star Destroyer that is was created to deal with the rebel threat - and possible threats from outside the galaxy - now we know why with Outbound.

Palpatine could have used those loose rumours as propaganda to encourage production, at very least yes. The name Imperator-class came from an alleged Geoffrey Mandel blueprint in the 80s, that was later confirmed to not be official in later years. It was initially thought to be though (by cross-sections author Curtis Saxton)

I also remember seeing speculation that a possible Yuuzhan Vong (or anything else) invasion was at least part of the reason for the various super weapons (besides just subjugating the galaxy under his rule) - the Death Star(s), the Eclipse(s), the World Devastators, the Galaxy Gun, etc. Heck, you had Luke lamenting the loss of the Galaxy Gun during the Yuuzhan Vong War due to how helpful it would have been against the Yuuzhan Vong world ships.

There a few real scale battles except at the end, but it is mare confusion more than a real battle. Other battles are just skirmishes resoved mostly by political cunning from Bel Iblis, or daring by Han Solo and Luke.

What I like with C'Baoth as a character is that he shows that some of the jedi sense something is wrong and suspect that a new purge is coming, and he intended to use the Outbound Flight as a means of escaping whatever threat were coming their way. He was also opposed to the Ruusan Reformation and basically dismantled it on the ship with the intent of bringing the older form of the jedi order back. He was however also a force supremacist and by all rights a dark jedi who fell oh so very quickly when the time came.

Honestly my favorite stories are ones where the bad guys turn out to truly be the good guys even though they have to act like the bad guys. Like emperor palpatine having to do all the dark side stuff to take control over the galaxy as preparations for fighting the yuuzhan vong. If it wasn't for him doing all that stuff to solidify a massive part of the galaxy into a small number of governments the galaxy wouldn't have had a chance since they would have been far too splintered and the fighting among themselves would have dwindled resources/capabilities. OR if was him pushing for constant battles that furthered technological advancement and production of weapons systems that allowed for a capable defense against the invasion. It's just a really complex and incredible story. I like to think that The Joker is actually one of these kinds of bad guy is actually good guy kind of characters. Where he has 4th wall breaking powers but has to do all this evil shit to the super heroes as a way to get them to the points in their lives that they are capable of defeating all the super villains that come around which are capable of destroying everything. Like superboy prime, Mongul, Hank Henshaw, etc... Very few of them would have turned out the same way if it wasn't for the messed up stuff Joker did even if sometimes it was very subtle.

I can tell you that Thrawn is my favorite Anti-Hero. His only fault was not seeing the possible ramifications of lying to the Noghri. I would argue that this move didn’t save the galaxy from the Yuuzhan Vong though. As they still invaded and caused mass distraction including the annihilation of Ithor. Had he been in command with the empires full power against the Yuuzhan Vong I wonder how different the war would’ve went. It’s probably my favorite part of the Legends in what I call the Skywalker era.

I don't recall that part of the Outbound Flight story... I remember some of the New Republic sending people out that way and finding it, I think Luke and a new padawan find it, probably one of the Solo children, and they find that the ship, crippled and drifting in an asteroid belt, connected to a few clusters which impacted the ship, closing off several sections... They find that any child that appears to show any sign of having the gift(curse to them) of being able to use the force, is either killed outright, or imprisoned in another part of the ship, far away from the original survivors, a near unlivable area... filled with traps and rogue droids, including droidekas, which they fight and destroy, and thus finding their way into the colony ship's surviving sectors where the majority of survivors live; they relay the tale of how the commander went Dark-side, killed off most of the other surviving Jedi, and was then killed, along with crippling of the ship. The surviving generation of people who remembered it, condemned all Force-users, no matter how young, or innocent.

An interesting sidenote is that the slavers had gravity wells, technology wholly alien to the chiss. Something that Thrawn gambled on and managed to seize, which was how he managed to trap both them and the Outbound Flight in the same area.

you forgot the odd use of the droideka shielding tech on the ships attacking the outbound flight near the end of the battle to end it. The shields were inverted making a short range burst field that would be deadly to the meat bags inside the dreadnoughts. but the civilians that had been evacuated to the center cylinder were safe. the dreadnoughts were damaged and the landing had to require landing the last one with working engines on the bottom of the crash to decelerate fast enough not to kill the civilian occupants.
