Back in the day I asked a mechanic why they had thick lines painted on their wall, it was for this very reason. They adjusted a lot of headlights. I use this method on my garage door. Good video. It's one of those many things most people never think about, but should.

I thought the purpose of fog lights was to be aimed directly at the face of oncoming traffic. At least that's what people do nowadays. My tip is to just lay a two by four, 25 feet (plus the distance from grill to front of tire) away from the wall, and measured to be perpendicular. Then simply roll your vehicle up to the 2x4. You'll be able to tell if you're parallel if both tires approach the board equally.

One thing to note is that outboard side headlight is actually meant to be slightly higher and/or focused to the outside of the road. It is meant to light up the side of the road without blinding people. The inboard side light is meant to light up both sides of the road without blinding people. Only caveat, you don't have old style headlights, some cars are completely level from factory, when using LED or HID.
@skeletorrc2583 Жыл бұрын
Very great job! Something I learned decades ago. Adjusting your headlights correctly is really helpful too not only you as a driver but oncoming traffic. You couldn't had made it easier. Correct Tire Psi, full or half tank of fuel, and what you carry on daily basis in your vehicle. I could go on and on. But the basics of what was shown here is as easy as it gets. Just wish every other driver out there would take the time too do this very simple process. Good job! And thank you for making this video. I hope it helped others.

+Glen Harper I agree. Chris notes how his lights don't flood into another car's mirrors or cockpit-which is very courteous and correct, kudos to him!-but it seems like every car I encounter on the road has their beams right in my face or bouncing into my face from my side mirrors! It gets so bad that I actually brake and pullover because I can't see to keep moving! Also, people seem to tail gate a lot more than they used to, and combined with misadjusted headlights blinding me fore and aft, it can be a white-knuckle experience just getting home from work. It's not just rude, it's dangerous!

For the EU Viewers: 1. Check if your car needs a 10% or 20% offset 2. Set the tape as shown in the video 3. Measure the height and deduct the percentage 4. Back up 10m 5. Adjust your beames according to your calculation. You have to use the lower part of the asymmetric beam, not the high one as shown in the video. If your headlight is properly adjusted, you are able to light the sidewalk without blinding the traffic. Edit: Fog lights need 20%/100m (2%/10m) and Head lights 10/100m (1%/10m)

@mark008204 жыл бұрын
Wasn't Chris using the lower edge of the low beam? I am fairly certain that is what he said. Perhaps you mean to say that in EU the upper edge of the low beam is used? That would of course drop the measurement the full height if the headlamp. Doing this would ensure that the beam is even lower than USA.
@chronocommander0073 жыл бұрын
@@mark00820 EU mandates dipped low beam. The percentage required is based on the height of the headlight above ground and is noted on the headlight housing. For passenger cars -1% to -2% is common. With a 1% dip the cutoff drops 10cm every 10 meters. The cutoff of the beam should hit the ground at around 50m in front of the vehicle.

I'm subscribed because I really appreciate the unvarnished information you present. My elderly friend has a 2004 Crown Vic, which is known by LEOs and other owners as having some of the worst forward lighting ever put on a car. I used this video to make it the best it can be under normal circumstances and may need to make 1 or 2 very small adjustments in the future. Even with my fairly normal vision these lights are poor at best. I've seen your police Crown Vic videos and wonder if you have any tricks or tips that you can share, and maybe if you have enough to warrant a video of their own. I'd really appreciate it, and I know for sure my friend would. Thank you for your efforts. It takes a special person to do this on a regular schedule!

Hot Flash, you can try a "low budget" approach that has worked for me. Step 1: polish the headlamps. Yours could be faded and oxidized. I use Mother's headlight polish with a rag. 5 minutes and you're done. Step 2: get some Sylvania extravision halogen light bulbs. These can be had for about $20 at your local Walmart. These helped out some. After the two steps, I can see very well now with just the factory halogen setup.

Great video. I think that there might be a mistake aligning at that height. There is a cut off horizontal line on low beams, that's the one you need to use. Right hand driving lights make some kind of low beam pattern like "__/". The aiming should be in the "__" (horizontal) part of the pattern rather than the "/" part.

You don't want the right side any higher. His method accounts properly for a slight down angle which illuminates the road ahead of you at the proper distance. What you want is the driver's side light a little lower, and the passenger side light a little toward the curb

Good video. I'm in France and there's a REAL problem with headlights in here, even worse i got very fragile eyes. Most brand new cars(especially ones from Renault)head towards opposite driver's eyes with their factory set-up. While our"technical control" just close the eyes on this for most old and used vehicles-and brand new ones too of course(!)-. It was just pathological some years ago, but now, it's epidemic and really dangerous for ppl like me with very fragile eyes. Even forced to park on the road's side and take a break until i can see again sometimes.

Thanks Chris! I bought some aftermarket halo headlights for my BMW and not only was the passenger side lowbeam REALLY low compared to the driver side, but I can't see ANYTHING at night or early in the morning unless I turn on my high beams. I finally got the passenger side up, but they both needed to be aligned properly. My OEM driver side headlight was hazed on the inside and even though I wetsanded and buffed them, the driver side still looked bad. A single side OEM headlight assembly was $250 for a used one that looked just as bad or worse, so I bought the LED halo lights for $225 with all of the bulbs and harnesses included, but you HAVE to align them properly. Sadly, I didn't, but I'm trying to now.

Probably already noted...you want a little bias to the right (US or regions that drive on right side of road) as to illuminate the right highway strip/reflectors on the road surface.

Oh my god, So much hardwork just to adjust you headlights.👌😑

Makes me quite glad to have a late 80's mercury. Just a couple of regular screws that you adjust from the front, no need to pop the hood.

What are people's opinions about those intense blue-white headlights that are so seriously blinding? I think they are dangerous and should be banned. Ordinary bright headlights are bad enough, but those blue-white ones actually hurt my eyes. Combine that with them misaligned and driving literally becomes a headache.
@znovosad5558 жыл бұрын
The problem is people putting them in improper housings. HID and LED bulbs are really only made for projector beam headlights. But people put them in reflector beams
@DavidParker-cf2km7 жыл бұрын
Those lights are dangerous to the opposing travelers. I don't stare at them, I am looking to the right, but they are so bright they reduce my night vision. The new super-reflective huge yellow warning signs are also dangerous. They are so effective at reflecting light that their yellow glare hides the road: I can tell a curve is coming up, but they hide the road.
@Anonymous-vh6kp7 жыл бұрын
I find that the newer cars that come with these lights standard are not blinding at all. It's the wannabe's who install them to their old rust buckets, who have them pointing to the sky; are the people causing the trouble.

HIDs are illegal in the state of Florida if your headlight housing is not designed for them. If you are being a nuisance and a cop sees it, you will be pulled over and given a fix-it ticket. The law is states that if you modify safety equipment in your vehicle from what it was intended that is an illegal modification. Even my projector headlight housings were not designed for HIDs and there are no lenses for HID headlights for my vehicle. The problem is that HIDs are longer than normal bulbs which means they will almost always be out of alignment and the light pattern is out of specification. I swapped my halogen bulbs with LED bulbs because they are the same size and I double checked that it did not modify my light pattern or alignment. LEDs are not that much brighter than bright halogen bulbs but they should never burn out. On the other hand the fans on them buzz loudly and you can hear them if your engine is off -- my car has an auto-off feature at lights so that is the only time I notice them.
@znovosad5557 жыл бұрын
acephantom903 yeah I hate HIDs. I have some of the newer LED headlights designed for non projector housings. Not blinding at all. Just a crisper white light.

Really like the foglight tidbit. Mine never seems to work right. Now I gotta check them out. Good video Chris. Keep them coming
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
Kevin Rovelli Thanks Kevin! Yea, most people dont realize the fog lights adjust. It is important to keep them low yet fill in the area that the headlights dont get to!

I bought a ford headlight adjuster tool off amazon about 5 years ago. This little tool has relieved me of so much frustration on my Ford Ranger... The only down side is I think it was around $30 shipped...
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
Nathan Bastedo Yea, I put the link to the tool in the description just in case someone wanted it. I didnt even realize there was a special tool (I should have figured lol). So dumb, just put an 8mm bolt in instead. I dont get it.

In Texas the official MVI stations quit checking the alinement of headlights some years ago. BAD IDEA. Thanks for you helpful video. I have to admit I just use the garage door. I have two Ford CVPI's. One is in alinement and I just put new light doors in the other. I will mark the correct one on the door, and then do the alinement on the other. No doubt your procedure is much more accurate.

Good deal. Glad you covered the Fog lights too, that was a good addition. Didn't know about the 6" L/R option. I need to move my drivers side light to the right some. I've got a bit of a blind spot between the drivers side of the road and the oncoming lane so a little more to the right should help...
