If you are trying to prevent yellow/golden tint, then RAW is your best option. I used semi-matt once on birch plywood and it gave a very obvious golden tint. The lighting in this video does not show that very well.

Your best bet for the look you want is to do a coat of the 3044 wiped on nice and thin as any build looks like a white streak, and then follow with a coat of the satin for the sheen you like. This works really well on pine floors too and keeps them nice and pale as opposed to just putting on the satin and them yellowing.
@MattHutton4 жыл бұрын
Ah okay nice, so the raw version first and then satin on top?
@daveychainsaw56854 жыл бұрын
@@MattHutton Hi, sorry, missed your reply. Yes, one coat of 3044 raw. I apply with a mirka mirlon UF pad and wipe off any excess with a lint free rag. Then one coat of the satin. Works really well.

Probably a bit late now, but as you mentioned the cladding... I recently wiped on 2 coats of Rustins ebony wood dye to unfinished Larch cladding, and then finished with 2 coats of the Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra 420 with a brush and wipe off after each coat. It's an utterly stunning almost silky finish. They do a 410 variant without the biocides in for interior use, which I'm going to try on some Birch ply panels going up internally.

Osmo usually specifically recommends against sanding to that high a grit. You end up burnishing and filling the pores of the wood, keeping the oil from absorbing properly. Can even says sand only to 150 grit.
@MattHutton4 жыл бұрын
Great advice mate

That's for flooring - for furniture, the OSMO website states a finish of 180-240 grit is fine.
@vnatik10 ай бұрын

Nice comparison video - what about the edges, how did they come out? In particular was there much of a difference between the Osmo oils and the polyurethane? Worried the Osmo oil finish might be a bit rougher.
@MattHutton2 жыл бұрын
The edges come out as smooth as you sand them. I sanded them with 120 grit until they were smooth then applied the finished.

This was incredibly helpful Matt, thank you! I want to use the Osmo Gloss for that perfect colour & sheen on some Birch Plywood for my Vintage Workmate I’m restoring (like the one in your video)... and I was wondering, after the Osmo dries, would you recommend applying a protective top coat like a water-based polyurethane or 2pac clear or something due to the heavy use on the workmates? I appreciate your advice Matt, thanks. Nickolas

Most UK supermarkets sell non-abrasive cleaning pads with foam on the opposite side. Super cheap and the foam is great for wiping off any excess, like you would with a lint free cloth.

Im also installing plywood walls, and your video was great. But i have the doubt between 3041-3040 because i don’t want that the plywood turns yellowish. Did you try any other colors? Also love the shirtless style. Guapísimo
@MattHutton4 жыл бұрын
Catalina Fuentes hey, I never tried 3041 or 3040. But from the ones I did try the Raw came out the least yellow, because it was already white in consistency. :)
@OryxDJ3 жыл бұрын
I spoke with the importer in Holland 3044 RAW is the 3041 wich is newer. 3041 is specifically made to apply and rub out. For my wooden table sanded to grit 120 i'm also doubting to use 3040 (white) or 3041 (natural). I did a test on some oak wood and to my impredssion using one layer of coloring both are very alike. Osmo recommends if you want the white wash look (not really my style) that you can apply 2 layers of 3040 white. Si as one of the only ones you could use 3040 as finisher on the first 3040 wich will give a white wash effect. I'm thinking of one layer 3040 white (4% white) followed with a 3062 mat finish. So not wash white but just that little more white then the 3041 (1.5% white) where the white is almost not visible. They do have little testers.

Be really careful with OSMO clear finishes (satin and matte) on birch plywood. They yellow more than the camera is picking up here, making the difference between that and untreated birch fairly drastic. I'd go with raw or polyurethane to avoid nasty surprises (from personal experience) .

I was looking for such comparisons however, you do not zoom out to show the application vs the untreated or comparison side. It is just a super macro of your fingernails tbh

I bought polyx based on this video, can fully confirm it does change the colour a lot. Goes a yellow honey colour even with just one very thin coat. And turns the edges a warm honey colour. Did use the pads however and it was a great application. But a lie that it hardly changes the colour.

Matt Hutton my favourite job was installing custom car audio systems. Trying to figure out how to fit speakers where speakers were never meant to go 😁 having to think outside the box and completely remaking something to look standard, but be totally custom. Loved doing that, though seeing customers never really appreciate just what you had had to do to accommodate them was a little disheartening 🤨
