Thanks for watching (: let me know what you think about this more cinematic aspect ratio for me videos. What mistake are you most guilty of?

Things I try to avoid: I see many self proclaimed pro photographers do this ....Lots of cutting off fingers, feet, arms also way to much headroom for know reason. I call them habitual limb slicers. I use to to be in that club.

Good thing is when you just edit your photos, make a break from them for like few days or week. Then look on them again and you will see what is wrong with them :D

Two mistake that I used to make was cutting off limbs at weird junctions and having odd positions of the subject within the frame.

Some good points about overshooting. I feel interacting with subject, directing etc and sharing image view, from screen, occasionally helps. But importantly not too much 'chimping' and beware of negative comments or 'head shakes' etc lest model/subject perceive it's their fault. On backgrounds often too little thought about distracting details, highlights, shapes and or text/signs etc which demand a viewer 'read'. Thought about natural dark areas at edge of frame to vignette subject and direct viewer attention where wanted. Granted much can be 'fixed in post' but it's usually much better, quicker and more efficient to pre consider backgrounds at time of shooting.

I learned back in the film days where you had to really make sure each shot was good. I worked in a Dark room and any adjustments were very time consuming. Now when I find that I am going to fast and shooting too many shots to get that magic one I slow down and remember the basics. Shooting just for me and to practice I use film and that forces me to slow down and remember the basics of seeing in my mind what it will look like with each change of shutter and aperature. Thanks for the video it keeps me on track.

Great tip about the contrast slider. I usually use that first then just move down the line. I will have to try it the other way around.

Great tutorial. 🙂 I am guilty of over-editing. I had a hard time learning, that just because you can doesn't mean you should.

good tips ..Im 3 years in to my portrait photography & I know ive made most of these mistakes . I do find shooting in low light you are better to raise your ISO up & get the perfect exposure instead of as a lot of photographers do is under expose & then bring up the exposure up in post , bringing your exposure up in post in low light gives you more noise than if you had exposed image correct in first place. another tip for brand new portrait photographers.. don't use a DSLR & go mirrorless ..I know my first few months of my journey using a DSLR was difficult & not fun at all.. when I switched to a Sony Mirrorless camera ..Oh Wow I could see my exposure in the view finder & I had the joy of eye auto focus too ..this made me enjoy what I was doing more & instantly get better images , more in focus & perfect exposure ,I could spend more time on my composition , directing the model etc & not faffing around with my camera settings & getting everything wrong.

@GilbertTV what are you trying to say? Your sentence got cut off... “gives you more” what? Noise? I would say that all depends on how much depth your camera has shooting raw.

Hello. Some good tips. I would that a lot of photographers shoot up at models and not from eye level so it makes the image an odd perspective. Also show the model the picture of the back of the camera so they can see how you are framing the image. Side note, I used to worry about only taking like 30-40 photos per set but not going trigger happy but with the rise of cheap storage I worry less about this.

One time, I did not notice that the ISO auto-sensitivity was turned on, so none of the ISO adjustments that I made were saved in manual mode. The photos turned out over-exposed (ISO >5000) and grainy.

Such great tips, and all in one video. Thanks so much. I wondered about the last shooting tip at approx 5:00 about too low an aperture. I didn't hear a "why" shooting with a really low aperture is a bad idea. So I looked at Wikipedia and found a comment, "Very small apertures have lower sharpness due to diffraction, while the added depth of field is not generally useful." While you covered the "not generally useful" part I missed any reference to "lower sharpness" in your video. Is that what you meant or did you have another reason? Sorry if this is so basic and I should have known the answer. Also, your editing comments to consider Black and White separate adjustments vs Contrast, and Vibrancy before Saturation are priceless! Thanks.

very good you may add camera setting while explaining with your voice over and show camera settings then show the final image ... that will make your video more interactive in my opinion

My most regret mistakes I made is taking too many photos like 500 photos and not focusing on composition, the lighting, exposure settings, the poses and all that basic stuff. Just hoping in those bunch shots there's some good photos in but they're not. And secondly, the camera is not focusing and often lose focus. I don't always trust my autofocus system since the motor is not so good that leads me to use manual focus instead most of the time since I experienced this big mistake in every photoshoots. Next, is way too much taking times to edit photos. I know to do skin retouching, we need at least 2-3 hours to finish one particular photo but it depends on the photo. If the model's skin and the lighting is decent, you don't have to spend much time on that. Especially when you're a perfectionist like me, you will understand this. And lastly (maybe) not practicing enough to improve my skills. I rarely do a photoshoot and just reminiscing old photos and editing oldies. That situation make you lose motivation to start shooting again. You know when you try to start back, you feels like you're not improving anything and keep repeating the same mistakes like when you first started photography.
