Great commentary on 250w it's not enough for the roads , 1000w is just enough for hills . The government is afraid of people abandoning cars and fuel duties for sensible electric pedal cycles !

If they can’t tax it they don’t care. Its not about our safety, clearly, its not about “clean air”, its all about the money and we, donkeys, need to obey their rules, and it seems we are very, very obedient. I got a 750W and I’m quite happy but tired of being worried. And 750W is not powerfull enough sometimes , but at least is decent motor. Re-thinking the UK ebike laws will be a miracle. And I don’t believe in miracles when it comes to governments.

I saw plenty of these as repairs for my bicycle business during COVID 19 . The big problem with 5 kilowatt and above motor set ups is the battery range is not good compared to Bosch set ups . The high current draw can damage the batteries , this can be a fire risk and the batteries flatten in under 20 minutes at 75 percent duty cycle or above . 10 percent of the battery capacity (stamina) is unusable to prevent cell damage .

That is brilliant, well done. A copper told me when he pulled me over on his bike that my bike was illegal because I had a thumb throttle, and its only legal if its pedal assist only. Some other copper on his ebike agreed with me that No Throttle rule is daft because if you are old and you have to stop when going up a hill then it is too hard to get going again, so whats the point of the ebike when a hill start is worse because of the extra weight than a manual bike! The 250w and max speed law is utterly stupid, it comes from a time when law makers did not understand the emerging ebikes and no doubt most of the law makers profit heavily from oil and seen the popularity of early ebikes as a threat. When i first got into ebikes it was to be used as a commuter to make life easier going to work when there was high winds and I started looking at 1000w bikes and those enduro style ones but more research told me they where illegal, so i settled for a 250w and well was utterly disappointed as my 1999 mountain bike was able to cruse easily at 25mph on the flat ( with no wind ) , and with the ebikeit stopped at 15.5 and due to the gearing you had to pedal like a mad man just to get close to 17 and even then I was easily being over taken but other cyclists and people on road bikes flew past me like i was standing still. Since then I upgraded to a 48v battery and at the time a LCD3 display and set a few settings and it was better and gave me a higher top speed than the 37v but then later swapped out the controller for a 1000W and oddly enough i did not gain any top speed ( think this was perhaps due to the motor winding's )but the starting torque was insane, later on i swapped out the motor for a 1000w direct drive and have had that since. But yeah the law is utterly stupid and outdated when compared to ones over in the EU or over in the US where they are more reasonable with the power / speed / throttle rules, it just seems logical to me that if all these new 20mph limited roads are the new thing to make roads safer for cyclists that ebikes should at least be able to reach 20mph like every other cyclist, and then the power well 250w limit makes no sense and shows they are ignorant of the tech as 250w motor is not what really limits top speed as set at a software level not hardware, and there is a huge safety advantage to having a higher watt motor as it allows you to accelerate faster not only at lights but also to get out of a situation .

This. Any hub can take any amount of power, if the controller lets it. "250W" is just a bunch of numbers and letters, and depends totally on the battery and controller used to feed it current. Given the speed he made, I'd say that's putting out at least 1000w now. Probably closer to 1.2-1.5k (I had a 1k w bike, it didn't hit that speed). But is it rated for it? I was just saying to a friend the other day, that the UK laws are stupid on ebikes. The pedal assist is dangerous at places like roundabouts where you would be far better off with a throttle,to get you upto speed quicker. The pedal assist takes a second or two to kick in. I have both pedal assist and throttle for this reason. Also I have a 250watt rear wheel motor and a 36 volt battery and on the flat I can get to 24mph,and with leg power I easily get to 30mph. 250 watt is not great on the hills around me in Sheffield though, but still a damn sight easier than a standard pushbike. Was that 31 kph or mph? My Rad Expand 5 (750w) has pedal assist and I know what you mean about going into a tight turn and not wanting the motor to engage because that can be dangerous in certain situations. However, it's really not a problem, at least not on my bike. All I have to do is simply move my left thumb over to the "mode" button and click the down arrow one time. This sets the pedal assist mode to "0" (off) so I can pedal through the turn or weave through pedestrians/traffic without any help from the motor. Then I just move my thumb again and hit the up arrow to be right back into motorized mode.

I have to correct you on one point, which was a fairly significant part of your presentation/ You kept mentioning that you thought pedal assist was dangerous because of the fierce and uncontrolled startup, but AFAICS, you have a KT controller that doesn't give that issue. Maybe you never tried a KT controller before, It's fundamentally different to the others in that it uses current control instead of speed control, provided that you set that option in the settings ( P3=1). With a KT controller, you can also set the throttle to be dependent on pedalling to make it legal. That way, it works as an instant power over-ride when you're pedalling with a lower assist level.

This might not mean too much to many, depends on ones build and energies... but I designed my mountain bike to be Dutch in style, and one finding I came up with on the peddling front (I'm a little underfit and overweight, but I do physical work every day and have kept going for years, though I love fitness), but I found a little revelation on bike seat position, the basics of what seems to be true based on my body is that where one positions and heightens the seat in relation to also having low handle bars can massively affect energy, but even with some mild road hills and trail hills, I can comfortably deal with them. Might make the difference between fun and hard work, have a great week all - peace /\

Can't say i have had much real experience with 250w yet but am definitely looking to in the near future, i use bafang mid 750w but i think pedal assist on mostly all of these kits are about as sophisticated as the average karen! Takes some time to really gain a good understanding of how assist actually works on whatever set up your on, and very sketchy and easily dangerous for a new rider with no experience, high pas, high gear, without thinking and low speed turn could spell disaster resulting in the need for some new pants. imo the TSDZ2 got the pedal assist done perfectly, except for the fact it doesn't give a torque kick like the Bosch CX motor in Turbo or E-MTB mode and other issues with it, it is a great bit of kit but has some severe issues out of the box, ride it on a hot day at excessive speeds in turbo or using throttle for a long time and it's guaranteed you'll fry it, start/use it in too high of a gear and it's possible to strip the nylon gear by the torque aswell, so don't just hammer the throttle on a TSDZ2 in a very high gear
