When it comes to instilling character in our kids, the most essential aspect we can teach and model for them is resilience. On this two-day Focus on the Family broadcast, Dr. Kathy Koch explores the importance of resilience in our lives and how we can nurture that trait in our children. As a parent, you are the key to your child’s resilience! Through intentional modeling, ongoing conversation and observation, and encouragement, you can help them learn to bounce back from struggles, get unstuck, and move forward with courage and confidence.

I remember walking home from college 10 miles. A mother horse came up to a fence to see me. She had a young colt with her, who was afraid of me. I noticed that she did nothing to coddle it or help it over its fear. She simply showed it, by her behavior towards me, that the situation was OK. Soon the colt settled down and stopped being afraid. I learned a big lesson from her that day.

I’m 36, I think the pendulum swung way to the other side from how our grandparents were raised as far as how they were disciplined. They got all tough love in that generation. Now we are so sensitive! I am guilty of this at times. I am fearful for my children in this day in age but I also find that I need to give them some tough love from time to time.

I have 2 girls, one going off to college next month and a fourteen year old. Is it too late for my 14 year old to be more resilient? She is very forgetful and I as a mom have a tendency to ask her a hundred times if she’s done this or that so she won’t forget and pay the consequences. My 14 year old is very sensitive but at the same time can have a short fuse. I just don’t want this world to swallow her up.

Remind her she can deal with hard things, she's not a delicate flower. The words you speak have power

I will pray for both of you, in Jesus Holy Name. You love her so much! I will pray for Jesus to surround her with His love and protection, and the knowledge of Himself, which sets us free. ✝️❤😇

Focus always tells us to let our children reap the consequences of their actions, to ready them for the real world. Hard to do, & yet necessary in their growth process. Said a pray for you, to know what to do & how to do it!

What about the “condition” of the child? Hungry, angry, lonely, or tired? (For example) Dads don’t often “do better”, because they ARE NOT “mothers.” The culture has indoctrinated dads to be “emotionally responsive” like women are, or mothers are, usually. Dads THINK. Moms FEEL.
