On most DSG vehicles you are going to want to change the fluid every 40,000 miles. Doing it yourself is a great way to save $300!
Here are some links to a few items I used in the video:
-rhino ramps: goo.gl/yQPN4a
-Funnel for DSG fluid: goo.gl/VKZwjE
-DSG Service Kit: goo.gl/gszaLY
-14mm hex for drain plug: goo.gl/3ot4AQ

Idea for you in the future. The older GTIs I had were always an issue to jack up because of how low they were. I used the spare tire jack to get the car high enough to use my big 4 ton jack on the car this is the easiest and safest way I know of to jack these cars up without using the ramp.

Agree with "Joelkwagen." No engine or transmission ever drains all the liquid out of the drain plug provided. The disassembly of one of these would demonstrate all the little places that the oil "hides" when the vast majority of it (probably 90+%) is drained. In the case of the DSG, I understand that the factory fill is 6.5 LITERS, so that quite a bit is going to be left in there unless the entire gearbox is disassembled and put through a parts washer, then reassembled and filled. And nobody's doing that; renewing the majority of the fluid (most people seem to get 4.6 - 4.8 liters out) is according to the VW spec, and works just fine.

Two thumbs way up. Planning on doing this first thing in the morning on my 2013 TDI Sportwagen. I'm nervous about jacking it up though. Plan on using the rear bushing of the control arm (subframe) for the front onto jack stands at the jack points, then the car's scissor jack in the rear onto jack stands. Sucks that VW doesn't make it easier to jack with a hydraulic floor jack...

This is the way to do this, except I didn’t do any leveling. Ramps in front, that was all. For our ‘13 Passat, drained 4.7 quarts. The only real PITA about it was getting the battery tray out to access the filter housing. A tip: warm the fluid bottles in a sink of hot water, this will cut the fill time greatly using the Flo-Tool.

I was wondering what the point was of leveling it out if you’re doing the top fill method. Seems like jacking up the front to drain the oil would suffice, considering you don’t need it to be level to fill.
@mencken8
@mencken8 3 жыл бұрын
@@raulsd.i.y.videos5585 Yeah, the drain, measure, and fill method obviates the use of the “snorkel tube” to determine fluid level, which means the entire leveling part may be omitted. After filling with new fluid through the filter housing, I just put everything back together, started it up and ran through the gears with my foot on the brake per the normal procedure. I assume that part is just to make sure the fluid is flowing everywhere. I did this at 40K and then drove it another 35K before selling it back to VW under the Dieselgate settlement, an offer I couldn’t refuse. Ran just fine.

They charge what they want to charge...if it was all consistent from dealer to dealer at a fair price, then yes I would agree with you that going to the dealer could make sense but the reality is, theyre just out to make money. I would recommend just going to an independent shop that specializes in euro cars or even better VAG cars, if you want that piece of mind and the service warranty.

Be very careful with your fluid levels on your dsg. That is honestly the only known issue that will definitely destroy it. Using the wrong fluid and or incorrect levels WILL destroy it, slowly but SURELY. Neither overfilling or under filling it is any good. I own 3 Audi's(2014 S4, 2012 A3 quattro and a 2007 A3 fwd) and have always done all of the maintenance on them myself following the service manuals. I've NEVER had any of them breakdown on me or give me any problems besides a hpfp on my 2012 A3 quattro. Always make sure your car is level when performing this procedure and get the car up to temp before draining the fluid. Next, remove the filter and loosen the drain plug(s) and allow ALL or as much of the old fluid(reason for getting the car up to temp), as possible to drain. Once you've done that install the new filter, then replace the plastic inner tube and if you're using the trans filler tool(preferred and factory recommended method), install it and fill it with 5 quarts of DSG fluid ONLY. Start the car and allow all of the excess fluid to escape while letting it reach temp(35c), monitored via vagcom. There is another way of knowing when the temp is at bar, but it is honestly not recommended. When the cooling fans kick on, the car is at temp or so i have been told by an old school vw mechanic. Anyway, replace the drain plug, run thru the gears 1x1 for 3 seconds at a time, then back to park. Same procedure for the top fill method. NEVER go by "what you've taken out goes back in!" The transmission bone dry holds 4.9l of fluid. You're putting 5l's back in with residue already left in the transmissions internals. The new filter will automatically get recharged by the transmission pump/pressurization and the overflow design in return will discharge any excess. All done. ENJOY!!!

Is there any reason I could not use the top fill method and the Vagcom? My thought is add 5L thru the top, put everything back together. With the car off the ground(level), start the car, run it thru the gears and monitor temp until it's up to 95F then open the main plug and let the excess drain out. This saves me from buying any additional bottom fill apparatus. The other option is just drain and refill with 4.6L and don't worry about temperature...?

I have read of people who just put all 5 liter bottles in when servicing the DSG. I put in what I measured when I drained it, and added 200 ml for what's trapped in the filter, so 4.5 l + 200 ml = 4.7l. The top fill is so much easier, and requires no special tool, nor the use of VAG-COM / VCDS.
@problemsolving7190
@problemsolving7190 7 жыл бұрын
I used the top fill method but still used the Vag to make sure the temp was right on before I drained it. If you are doing it for the first time just make sure you have gone thru the shifting before you drain it. All in all I do believe I still added about 4.75 back into the tranny.

the best method is to fill using all 5 liters. Then run the car until transmission temp reaches 35 thru 45 degrees Celsius. You're the only video i have seen that fills through the filter housing. Does it not make a difference to fill it that way compared to filling it via the gravity method back through the drain hole? Cheers, Great video, you just saved me $1000 AUD
@Joelkswagen
@Joelkswagen 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, the method through the drain hole is what is factory recommended because then you can be absolutely certain you have the spec amount of DSG fluid in the transmission since you will overflow to the correct amount. That being said, the method shown in the video here is much easier. In my opinion the marginal difference in fluid volume you might have between methods will have ZERO impact on the longevity of the transmission as long as; 1. The fluid amount that comes out is approximately the specified amount that should fill the transmission according to VW/Audi and 2. You change the fluid at the correct interval. If you are getting the specified amount out of the car when draining you know there is not a leak, and you can just put the same amount back in. If you drained less than expected, there might be an issue, like the DSG being under filled by factory, or a leak. If this was the case I would recommend going bottom fill method. My GTI is at 110k miles, changed with the method detailed in the video twice, and its running great!

Filling from the top is certainly appealing. Of course if you use the measured fill method a few times, after a while, the amount of fluid is going to drift from the original fill. I wonder what the factory manual says? Does anyone have access to that?
@Joelkswagen
@Joelkswagen 6 жыл бұрын
This might be true, but I believe the difference to be negligible. If you are not leaking fluids, and you put in the same amount that comes out, a few ounces difference will not matter over the life of the car (lets say 200k miles and 4-5 DSG changes). I have done two changes this way, almost at 100k miles and the DSG has no problems.

Thanks for sharing. Driving up on 4 ramps seems like a difficult task. Why get all 4 wheels in the air instead of just the front? The DSG drain plug is in the rear side of the housing so it appears only lifting the front is necessary. I have not performed this service yet so that is why I am asking. Thanks in advance.
@Joelkswagen
@Joelkswagen 9 жыл бұрын
D SMITH I would love to see someone get all 4 wheels up on ramps! That would defy logic I think... The reason you would get the car up in the air, front and back, is so that it is as level as possible when draining the fluid to ensure you get the most out of the transmission. It is my understanding that performing the oil change by just lifting the front of the car deprives you of working space, and prevents you from getting the maximum amount of fluid out. I have however seen someone do this in a video, so i know it is possible. Conventional wisdom on this topic would suggest that having your car level during the fluid change makes for the most effective results.
@dsmith584
@dsmith584 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for chiming in. Since posting I have found out that if you do the top fill measured method you do not need to get all 4 wheels off the ground. Just the front two. All four wheels do need to be off the ground if you do the bottom fill method. This is because you are using the internal snorkel to get the correct level. Just an FYI and hope this helps others out.
@Joelkswagen
@Joelkswagen 9 жыл бұрын
That makes sense! It would be interesting to hear what oil volumes people are getting out of the transmission with the two different methods (4 wheels up vs 2).
@GigiBeleaDK
@GigiBeleaDK 9 жыл бұрын
Joelkswagen No, you level the car because you need to fill up the gearbox with MORE oil than you drained and then let it level, then take out the extra oil. Usually you need anywhere between 4 and 6 liters of oil (depending on the car, gearbox). If you drain 4.5l of oil, you would want to fill up 5l back in. Let the engine run at idle until it reaches working temperature then drain the extra oil. Even if you drained 4.8l, the car might still need 5 liters or more, you never know if the previous level was correct or if some seal leaks and you lost some oil. When you check the oil level, car needs to be as close to the driving horisontal position as normal, so that's why you level it.

Great video, but why in the heck are you using a torque wrench to loosen hardware?
@Joelkswagen

Thank you! A quality torque wrench isn't going to get thrown out of calibration from loosening a few bolts at relatively low torque. But you are right, not a good practice I suppose.

I’m looking at buying a 2013 GTI with 70k miles. How can I tell if the fluid was changed?
@Joelkswagen
@Joelkswagen 6 жыл бұрын
Maintenance records from the owner or dealership is probably the only way. Not sure if when a dealership does it if there would be anything on the cars computer that would indicate that the service was done. Maybe there would be a note in the car's service manual as well.

this is wrong, ure not supposed to put the same amount u took out, I'm at VW trans certified and work in a dealer and this dish trans are really sensitive and the wrong amount or wrong fluid, ure gonna ruin it in the long run.... Seen it plenty of times.So here ,-when u get to the point of filling it, put 5 quarts of dsg-make sure ure wheels are of the ground and car is level, stands or bay)...there's is a lot safety here, if u don't know what u doing take to the dealer- after is fill and filter is on, turn on the car, u gotta run the trans throughall the gears R, D, S, n N each for 5(just idle) seconds.-while the car is running u gotta loseen up the plug, let it drain until it starts to slow drip to(that's the reason the black piece is in the there, that tells the right amount) once is slow drips plug it back on.... With that said, DSG expands when it's gets hot, ure supposed to do this part and let it drip while the fluid it's between 30c-35c, --so yeah it's a little more conplicated than drain and fill and I see cars back in the dealer with transmission problems bec did it myself or so so shop did my trans service

Only if you never ever plan to drive that car again!! DSG fluid is a very specialized fluid that is different from automatic fluid. It is horribly expensive sold at $22 per liter maybe more depending on where you get it. You must be thinking that is just crazy? I will tell you that replacing one of these DSGs is insane by comparison if you hate things that are expensive. If you can't use the correct fluid, do yourself a favor and sell it. That is better than the disappointment of an expensive transmission failure. The other automatic that VW uses, the 09G is also notoriously sensitive to fluid type so beware of these finicky things and use the correct fluid. Not using the correct fluid in a Volkswagen or Audi can only cause gloom and doom for the wallet!! As I sit here typing this message, I have my black Bombay cat Jinx snuggling up against me. She will just sit down and lean up against me and fall asleep or relax while I enjoy a good movie. She also comes up and sleeps on the empty space on my bed, they love attention such as that.

Why didn't you let all the transmission fluid drain out?
@Joelkswagen
@Joelkswagen 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, with a DSG fluid change you are essentially replacing a majority of the fluid but it is not a "flush." You replace as much as will come out when the car is sitting level, and this is how they do it at the dealership. The only difference between how I did it, and how they do it, is the use VAG COM to check temperature levels of the fluid, which is widely accepted as not necessary. I would recommend taking a look at the forum documentation I have including in the description if you are looking to do the job yourself!

There isn't much difference with the bottom fill method. I bought the tool for the bottom fill method and have a VAG-COM though which is really only used to get the temperature of the fluid to ensure it is in the correct operating range. Honestly the only thing I would do to improve your method is warm up the car for about 15-20 minutes after your refill procedure, shift it through all the gear positions half a dozen times and (with the snorkel in) open the drain plug to ensure it isn't overfilled. Once it's down to a drip, put the drain plug back in.

Does this method not assume that the dsg fluid was filled to the correct level previously? What if it was over filled before and you are just overfilling it again? Also, provided that the fluid came out after the initial drain plug was removed, does that not mean that it was overfilled? As it should have dripped out had it been filled to the correct level?

Hi samartz , you should not experience any performance issues by removing the resonator without an ECU tune, as long as the two sensors on the down-pipe stay unmodified. If you are just removing the resonator you would be fine.
