I had some fun working on my golf changing the spark plugs myself! This job is a right nightmare trying to get the job done! The only thing gets me ranting is the cylinder 2 spark plug because you got to take the blinking manifold off and I don’t really want to take it off if I really have to! Wish it’s located on top and not underneath the manifold! It’s so much easier!

You don't have to remove the intake manifold. Cyl 3 is a bit tricky but you can do it without removing manifold. Just did this about a month ago.

I’ve managed to replaced the spark plugs on mine without taking the manifold off but this job is a right nightmare and managed to replaced them all 4 plugs!!

One little gotcha. If you're removing the air pump bracket, there is a risk that the dipstick tube which attaches to it, will crumble/disintegrate on you, as the plastic degrades badly with the heat over time. This happened to me when I removed the air pump bracket to do the coil on my Mk4 a few months ago. The good news is an aftermarket dipstick tube is less than a fiver so might even be worth replacing it anyway, as it takes a few seconds to just clip it in. As for doing the job with the manifold in place, I too have done it a couple of times on our 1.6 8V (BFQ), but it is very fiddly and needs the right combination of universal joint, and extension bar to get to cyl 2 and 3 through the tiny gaps available. There is a proper VW tool (ref 3122 B) for this job, which is basically a narrow spark plug socket with a wobble joint and extension bar - and I dare say it would be a lot easier with that! Getting the plug leads on and off is a pain too - I needed a pair of long nosed pliers (there is a proper VW tool for this too V.A.G 1922). Have to say that the first time I did it, it probably took me nearly as long as this method - but without the risk of snapping a manifold bolt. The other problem with not removing it, is you're working with very restricted visibility and its easy to miss any crud that might be lying around the plug, and you would normally be able to clean away so it doesn't drop in the engine when you get the plugs out - so I found it helped to have an aerosol air duster handy.
