It’s a question my fishing partner and I had a few years ago in a mass swap out from trebles to in-lines. I haven’t noticed any significant difference in lure behavior or action, and in fact, because I most often fish water in Texas less than 3’ deep, if anything, they make a subsurface lure a little lighter so it rides a little higher and maybe even more accentuated twitches and flash in the shallows. On some thinner lures, because I maybe twitch too hard, a single hook can grab over the back of the lure whereas a treble might not but that may just prompt me to twitch a little less vigorously.

Do the singles come back mostly weedless? I fish a pretty grassy lake....and the trebles catch about everything but fish

I do this for my freshwater lures. Two trebles in a kayak flailing around is dangerous and inlines hook just as many fish

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I hurt my hands&fingers numerous times by treble hooks when I unhook the fishes, and they often get into the gills and eyes of fishes. I changed to single hook but hooking rate goes down like, stock market during Lehman Shock! This outstanding video definitely solve that issue! Thanks and I subscribed your channel!

I ordered some 7 inch, blank, Rapala type lures to use offshore or wherever, with no hooks for comparison...any guess as to what size trebles I should go with? Maybe a "no bigger than /no smaller than" guess? Thanks for the informative video.

Thank you for this instructive video, want to change out my Lucky Craft Trebles to single inline. Lucky Craft comes with 3 trebles. Should i match the weight of the 3 treble hooks with the 2 inline hooks to keep the same action and casting ability? Thank you.

Is there a point to a crankbait rod (moderate action) if you use single hooks instead of treble hooks? If you made the hooks barbless for instance would it help to keep the fish pinned?

Many of us can't bring the treble to the local store and compare, the local store don't hold them in stock. So we have to order on line and hence a rough transfer table would have helped, especially if hook brand/model was stated.

Tony. I changed to inline hooks on my mirrodine lures. It changed them from suspending to floating or very very slow sinking. Is it possible to add a small screw in the bait to weight enough to get it to sink. Thanks

I like that in the shallows I fish, having subsurface twitch baits ride higher and even sometimes breaking the surface or causing an attention-getting ripple.

Been thinking about making the switch soon. Been having issues lately were the more green fishing coming into the boat tend to get whichever treble hook that is not in their mouth, hooked deep into their body. I catch and release all my fish, so I'm starting to feel bad for causing any more damage than necessary. How is the hookup ratio? That is the biggest complaint I hear on the internet, but I wonder if its because they are sizing their hooks improperly.

The hookup ratio is surprisingly good. I haven't seen a decrease at all for big fish that typically eat the lure. The only different I've seen is that the small ones that can't fit the lure in their mouth as easily aren't getting hooked as often... which is a big benefit in my opinion because I've had multiple instances where something small was popping at it and missing before a bigger fish came in and sucked it down.

I bought Owner 3/0 and 4/0 single inline hooks to replace trebles on 6 and 7 inch poppers. Both of those sizes seem a little small compared to the trebles that were on these. How large of a single inline hook do I need for those large 6 and 7 inch surf poppers?

Brad Hatch some anglers prefer inline hooks over trebles because it makes releasing the fish easier , hope this helps ✌🏻

It helps with releasing fish like diesel_fishing said, but it also causes less damage to the fish, and generally less snags on structure or floating grass!

Thinking of doing this with nearly all my hardbaits. I live in europe and mainly chase after Northern Pike, however i'm often in a situation where the lure is hooked deep inside the mouth of the pike, almost near the esophagus. And then you're spending a lot of time performing surgery by trying to unhook those treble hooks carefully. But how's the hook-up ratio? Do you catch less fish or miss more bites? Or is it equal?

The hookup ratio is worse with small fish that don't such down the entire lure when they hit (which is a good thing in my opinion). But the hookup ratio seems equivalent with the bigger fish because they'll often get the lure in their mouth which will almost always get at least one of the two hooks to take hold.

A lot of guys like 3000 size reels. 2500-3000 is perfect for most inshore applications

I know using heavier (weight wise) hooks will mess up a lures action but not the lighter. At least that was the case for me on some older Rapala shad raps.

You're absolutely correct. Heavy or light weight hooks will affect floating and suspending lures and their action.

If you can avoid swivels, try to use a loop knot!

Inline hooks also get deeper and have better hook sets, sadly tarpon aren’t very hooks or with some trebels

I tried to use them on a mirrodyne xl but the lure floated rather than slow sink. Went back the trebles and the lure slow sank.

That would be because your newer single hooks weigh less than the old treble hooks you were using. You probably need to step them up a size or two bigger.

Yes, the replacement hooks should be used when replacing treble hooks on lures. Circle hooks should not be used because they are designed more for natural baits... they are not very effective on lures that need a quick hookset.
