How, Why and What of a Clean Fast! Is it really important?
I have started Intermittent Fasting after reading Fast. Feast. Repeat. This video shares my take and experience with what a clean fast is and why it's importatn. I cannot wait to continue seeing weight loss and health benefits from my daily clean Intermittent Fasting. Gin Stephen's book is amazing. I have been doing daily fasts (also known as time restricted feeding) for nearly 5 months.

Great video! I know my fasts should be cleaner. Dirty fasting is why my progress is slower than I “thought” it should be. I want the health benefits of fasting not just weight loss. I’m going to work on cleaning up my fasts.

Thank you so much for explaining the Diet Coke thing! I LOVE my Diet Pepsi’s and couldn’t give them up, but this explanation helps me to understand the artificial sweetener and insulin factor. ❤️

This may sound crazy but I started fasting yesterday with one hour eating window and felt great ....did that today as well and still felt great ...took your advice and ordered “Fast , Feast, Repeat”....looking forward to learning and so appreciate your channel ! wow finally someone explaned for me real basics i needed to know, thank you😊❤️I am 55 had full hysterectomy and gained a lot of weight i always always always ate everything i wanted all day long and i always was skinny until then, now i feel like an old fat human being and i am going to follow your advise, i have seriously thought about having a gastric bypass thats how sad i am about my situation i went from 67 kg to 95 i am 178 cm and to many i might not be “ fat” but im not in my normal weight and i feel horrible and restricted in being fully active swimming yoga and so on. Thank you❤️

My success with this has been wild. I completely clean fasted from day one. It makes a HUGE difference for hunger to not trigger insulin. My inflammation has gone down so much in the first week. I lost 10 pounds on 6 days just shedding excess water from my joints and now I'm more mobile. Probably 6x the energy. Sleep consistently through the night and am able to walk several miles in the last two days DURING the fasting period. The book is so important to understanding why you can't have gum and flavors. But my plan is to get my sisters on board. They are pretty inspired by what I'm having happen right now, so it's really great.

The Diet Coke explanation/example was pure gold! I’ve been keto for 3+ yrs and would use Coke to help my fasts….and for most of this time, I’ve not been able to lose the last 40 lbs even tho I’ve been “fasting”. LIGHTBULB!!!! 💡 thank you!!!

I've been doing 16/8 IF for 35 days. It's been relatively easy all but 3 days. Some days I go over my 16-hour window because I'm not that hungry. I do a clean fast. I'm eating somewhat Meditertean Diet-style. So far, I've lost 7 pounds. That doesn't seem like much, but it's about 1.6 pounds per week. I've really noticed that I feel better and my clothes fit better. Thank you.

The no Diet Coke outside my window is gonna be the roughest for me. I’m a 40-year hardcore drinker of it. But I know that I need to seriously cut back if not flat-out quit it. Have problem doing Keto too since having COVID-19 wrecked my sense of smells and taste. Love your videos!

Hello Jackie, I miss eating cakes but I do on occasionally in my eating window which is 8 hour from 6pm-12pm. I’ve lost 27 pounds so far but I really would like to lose another 10 pounds. Pray for me that I can follow your guidance and read these wonderful books to give me further advice.

I gave up sodas over a year ago and I bought this book as my neighbor is doing this fast I'm going to start tomorrow and I'll weigh myself next week sunday to see if this works

I got motivated again watching this video, but lasted 2 days with the black coffee. It's like torture 😫 I only put heavy cream in my coffee but without ANYTHING it's like Hell. Props to those who can do it. If it's making me lose weight slower but I can enjoy my coffee I'm okay with that.

I’m a makeup artist and I tend to be fasting while working but I absolutely have to have a listerine strip between each client because I’m all up in their face. Im hoping it doesn’t break my fast

They say anything under up to 50 calories won't tell your body to register it as food. Tim Spector said that. And Jason Fung says you can have calorie free sodas and a little milk in coffee or tea. No harm. But then Gin says you shouldn't. But her reasoning is because it makes people more hungry during their fast. I don't have that problem. In fact the opposite. If i can have a coffee i enjoy with some milk in it it sustains me for longer. People like the Glucose Goddess have done insulin trials in themselves to see if these things do actually spike your blood sugar. There just haven't been enough studies to confirm either way. So many conflicting opinions.

Plain black tea, not herbal, no sweetener, yes is clean. Herbal tea may or may not be okay to some people, you'd have to test it. But tea from the actual tea plant, Camellia something or other is okay, whether it's green or black or white tea leaves

Black, green, yellow, oolong, white, and pu’er (raw or ripe) are all ok teas to drink. However, stronger, tannic teas (mainly black) often upset my fasting stomach.

I have been doing a little cream in my morning coffee and also lemon and apple cider vinegar water. It doesn't make my fast harder at all, but I wonder if it's inhibiting weight loss.

Still doing my research before I start and have watched a bunch of your videos. I've already switched my coffee from Milk/Sugar to Califia Unsweetened Almond Milk and Lakanto Munkfruit Sweetener from 2 years of Keto, not sure having black coffee would even be worth it for me.

I think it has to do with bitter of coffee? Honestly, I am not sure. I just followed the guidance and it worked well! I've never been a lemon water drinker. I'm guessing (without looking it up) that lemon likely triggers an insulin response.

Hi Jackie! I have been intermittent fasting for a short while, and I would like your thoughts on something. I take a bioidentical hormone replacement (Yay Menopause!) in the form of a troche (they are little melts the size of a grain of rice). It has a slight sweet flavor(it's not supposed to be swallowed, but absorbed into the cheek and gum area), but I have to take it first thing in the morning. Do you think that breaks the fast?

It should be fine! It’s the equivalent to brushing teeth it’s a taste not a drink when you taste it the insulin reabsorbs within 6 minutes and you’re not drinking all day long something with sweet etc. so the dissolving tab should be a taste and likely fine

There is some evidence that the sweet taste of diet sodas can spike insulin (to a relatively small degree). I'm unaware of any evidence that supports the notion that flavor without any sweetness could do the same. I'm not sure it makes a whole lot of sense to me, to be honest, though admittedly I haven't read the book you recommend.

For me, minty sugar free gum seems impossible to give up. I chew gum a lot and thought it helped with hunger. I will try this but it makes me want to cry

No flavored carbonated water? I think she is wrong. The following is from the top Amazon review: 'Gin states that “sweet, sour, and umami foods increase saliva secretion (which helps our bodies prepare for digestion and food absorption) while bitter flavors (such as black coffee and plain tea) do not have this effect.” The cited study ("Effects and Mechanisms of Tastants on the Gustatory-Salivary Reflex in Human Minor Salivary Glands”) simply doesn’t show that. Rather, it found that ALL flavors did not increase saliva in low concentrations, but did increase saliva in high concentrations. As it notes, "The present study has shown that each of the five basic taste sensations can induce human [saliva] secretion.” It’s possible she briefly read the abstract, saw that bitter did not stimulate nearby blood flow (which is different than saliva), and applied that to the saliva aspect as well.'

What do I suggest I have before a 2km swim? I swim daily in the mornings, (I can't swim at any other time) and I don't feel well exerting myself without having at least a drink, not just water. I start my fast from 6pm till 10am ie 14 hrs I dont drink coffee at all

Hi Jackie, you mentioned keto breath and what you did for that... But there was no link or card to whatever your solution was, can you share what it was you did? And this is just out of curiosity, because as far as I know I don't have a problem with keto breath lol I've been on keto for a while so I think it goes away when one is adapted anyway.

Yes, if you can drink that in your eating window, that is ideal. However, you gotta do what is best for you.

I love my morning coffee with 1 Tbsp of heavy whipping cream because it cuts the bitterness of the coffee. Are there any tricks to make black coffee easier to drink?

You get used to it after a while and then really start to look forward to black coffee-trust the process! And I have upgraded my coffee quality. I use organic pods from Costco because I know they are healthier and they taste mild and not so bitter.

@@beckygosky1 that's so funny that you posted that just now! I was just taking a sip of my black coffee realizing that I have finally adjusted to it. I do put a pinch of salt in to help with bitterness. But I haven't had cream in it for the past couple of months now. Honestly I'm really enjoying drinking it black. I also really enjoy drinking Peets Big Bang coffee. It's much smoother and not bitter tasting.

Hi!! I actually think that it is okay if they are unflavored electrolytes. That's actually a big change that I have made... I was drinking electrolyte water with a splash of lime and I was really suffering! White knuckling it as Jackie says lol. But then I switched over to unflavored, and now I'm breezing through 24 hour fasts no problem! I also stopped taking my collagen in the morning after I read that bit of information in Gin's book.

I had terrible leg cramps until I realized I was eating too many carbs with my meal. (Omad and fasting 2 years). Once I distanced (and reduced) my high carb meals/ sugary treats, from my bed time, the cramps stopped completely!
