I felt my anxiety coming back again... Because of the isolation. This is a very important time to not only take care of our physical health but also mental health.

I had a social event canceled today. This was something that I had been looking forward to for a while. For a while during the pandemic, I have had this feeling that any time that I planned something, it would be canceled. It has been crushing to have this cycle happen over and over. Thank you for this video and your channel.

This could not have come at a better time, I had finally found a routine that works for me after years of struggling with mood and personality disorders to then have my university and work close and my whole schedule fall apart along with the additional stress of loss of work. Was bordering on another panic attack when I found your video and it's really helped. Thank you so much!

A *lot* of people are in this exact situation as you. I know how much this sucks. I put a lot of work I put into launching my own independent business and most of it was completely canceled last week. I'll make a follow up video soon about managing uncertainty and worries related to the coronavirus. Until then, glad to hear this one brought you some peace. Thanks for the comment!

I’m in Korea and we’ve been dealing with this for weeks now. I lost all my work and it’s been such a struggle. We have a five month old baby to support, and there’s no help out there for us. We are trying to move back to my home country, but now it’s taken hold there. Very tough time for us. I hope we can all pull through it together.

Dear Keelan, This sounds like a very difficult situation. First, do everything you can to protect your family and your newborn. Second, if you are in need of financial support, is there anyone in your home country that could send support to you? Lastly, consider resources near you. Either neighbors, even if you don't know them, or perhaps your home country's embassy? Wishing you the best, Ali

Hi Dr Mattu, great video! I find I like to fall asleep to WHO (virtual) press conferences. They really calm me down. I tried abstaining from the rising numbers but I got such a shock when I saw how much they had risen in the meantime that I now try to look up the numbers once each hour so it's not such an extreme jump up. We're very worried about my mom. She's a war fugitive. Since she is severely disabled nothing changes for her in reality. But the news awaken the trauma of hunger, escape, flight and fear, loosing family, not being able to buy things - it's really, really horrible. I don't mind much shutting down. As a child I experienced once a holing up of several weeks due to extreme weather. As a child that is kind of exciting and adventurous. (The parents worry, though.) As a student I spent some time myself in quarantine - admittedly too ill to bother at all. And with my chronically ill grown up child we every now and then spend a couple of weeks home and in seclusion because he is ill plus immunocompromised. The longest was three months during kindergarten ... You kind of learn tricks and techniques ... From Europe: all the best to all of you and stay safe! #AlertNotAnxious #FlattenTheCurve

Thank you so much for this video! The ideas presented are extremely helpful. I just wanted to add that I find myself struggling with what I think is a kind of grief. Given the amount of time that we’ve already been at home, and the fact that it doesn’t like we’re much closer to going back to even a semblance of normal, I find myself crying a lot. I think I’m grieving for the dreams that I had before this happened, and the activities that I used to enjoy. I find myself panicking about never being able to hug my grandma again, or anybody else I love. Or never be able to enjoy concerts in the park or travel to Paris, like I always dreamed. This is making me overwhelmingly sad. I wonder if I’m alone in that?

I discovered this channel a few days ago and I like the things you share and the way you express yourself a lot. I think the 'mastering something' tip is truly helpful. For me, it's books and videogames. I've been trying to become kind of an expert at one of my favourite survival/strategy games (Don't Starve) and it really takes my mind off everything that's going on outside whenever I'm playing. Exercising and meditating also help me stay calm and maintain a routine. I'm currently reading 'Waking Up' by Sam Harris, which talks about mindfulness and introspection, and it's a really practical and interesting read. Thanks for your videos, stay safe!

Fenomenal video! Lots of very usefull tools for this tough times. You said, which I highlight because it's super important, TO BE KIND TO ONESELF. Perhaps you used other words, but the concept is important. To go easy on ourselves, we are not perfect, so in this times of less productivity, trying to stop self blaming thoughts about being unproductive aren't helpful. It's super important to try to get somewhat organised with what we want to do during the day. Set easy to achieve goals to feel accomplished at the end of the day. It's not necessary to do a lot, but we need to keep doing things. The endless scrolling is the demon that grabs our attention and leads us to guilt at the end of the day for doing nothing at all but scrolling. Things that I plan on doing is a lot of reorganizing around the house, with my files, photos, the google drive cloud... I'll try and get into drawing, maybe digital art. Making a drawing a day would be fantastic for example. Things like that Thank you so much for your videos! They are really really useful and applicable to our lives. You really make the difference with what you do!

I know it's a sensitive topic but I'd really recommend a book after noticing the way you handled the stressful situation with your daughter and the guitar, it's a great book called Parent Effectiveness Training by Thomas Gordon. I don't mean to be condescend AT ALL, but I think it might be a great book to use the new time we all now have on to massively improve your relationship with your daughter so it doesn't have to be you winning or her winning, you both can win. Again I really want this to be a positive message rather than a negative one. Kind Regards.
@drali4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the recommendation. I wouldn't say that was a stressful situation at all. Rather, it was a playful one. My daughter always likes to play with me when she sees her ukulele or my guitar. As a CBT child psychologist I'm trained in parent management training and parent child interaction therapy. This situation wasn't one in which I saw any need to deploy those skills. Once the interaction started, I wanted to demonstrate that in this current climate it's 100% fine to have your children interrupt your work in this way.

Hi! I know this is unrelated to the topic of this video but I just wondered, are there any mental health occupations which you feel you would struggle to do/want to do? The reason I ask is that I'm questioning if I will make a good therapist because I don't like the idea of working as a mental health worker or recovery worker. Those jobs seem too 24/7 and chaotic (almost too frontline) whereas a therapist role feels more structured with clear cutoff points with clients. I just wondered what your thoughts were and if you have had any experience in other mental health roles/what you thought of other roles you've had?

She has a lot of allergies and other problems so getting the virus would be a big problem for her. Even worse, she is in the middle of her thesis and cant focus at home. Hi, I'm currently interning at a small mental NGO and I was wondering if you had suggestions for what NGOs can do to support people in the current situation. I've seen a lot of posts people have made on social media, but I wanted to know if more can be done. Also, since I'm interning, how can mental health professionals and the people involved who are supporting others also maintain their own health? Kind of feeling stressed XD. Thanks!
