Today we go over how to cut EPDM pond liner to make troughs. You can then take these and waterproof your deck.

Question please reply! I am currently building a 16’x16’ ground level deck. I have it squared and all of the joists are currently just resting on the beams. I plan to plane the joists to make sure that they are all level. But I’m wondering what my next step should be. Do I first attach the joists to the beams and then add the blocking? Or do I install the blocking and then attach the joists to the beam? At what point in all of this would it be safe to then plane them? The beams have a slight crown to them as do some of the joists. And I do have the crowns facing up. Should I close the gap underneath the joists that are slightly floating above the beam and then attach it to the beam? Or should I shim them? I really appreciate any advice. Thank you and thank you for the great videos!

I usually grade the joists by thickness before putting them on a beam. Then I install them and then plain them if needed.

I plane my beams too, so that way joists can sit flat and then I lock the joists in with hurricane ties (H1Z). Plane the joists and install blocking.

Why not use one piece of EPDM rather than cut and then seal each bay section? You have enough help to wrestle one sheet into place. I was thinking of using a few 2x4's as jigs bridged across each bay as it's stapled with each of the 2x4's having increasingly deeper blocks in the middle to push the liner down to the right depth as it gets deeper to the deck end. I saw a video of a guy doing this by himself. Seems this method would be faster and again, no seams to seal. What am I missing?

@@kirstenrussell1012 A better solution seems to be DexterDry that I found on the drdecks channel. Funny that one of the benefits on the DexterDry site is economical. At $2.25/linear ft. for 240' rolls, my 17'x16' deck will cost well over $1000 for the rubber seal plus the tool they now sell. It will look cleaner underneath and appears easier than EPDM to install. I like the idea of installing the seal into the boards on the ground, rather than trying to do it on top of open joists. Glad it comes in rolls.

THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY HIS COURSE - I did and there is NO value there. Watch some of the others, who also refer back to this man’s videos. Also - watch this all of this man’s videos and you’ll see he does tell you everything that’s in the course. I watched it see what the required gap was between the Baffle and end of the bladder - and he does not even discuss that. And he does y need to either. Because both thd bladder and the baffle have to drain into the gutter ! In all his videos, he doesn’t say it but his OC joist separation is 16 inches. That’s why he had 18” on the narrow end ( 16 plus 2x0.75) and 28 inches on the far, deeper side, which lowers doen by 5 inches into the gutter ! I’m not taking any bussiness away from him in writing this / but inviting him him to be more descriptive in these KZbin videos!

You titled this as cutting, refer to another video that is fee-based. What I wanted was dimensions on each pie shaped. There only two spacing dimensions of joists 18 in and 12 inches. Would have been simple to add in one or two sentences. Disappointed!!
