If you have both, along with being funny and confident you will get a lot of attention! 4. Be subtlety romantic. Walk on the road side. Make sure she's warm when its cold. Hold the door for her. Give her flowers from time to time. Cook dinner for her, etc. 5. Be polite and kind to others. This just seals the package. Displaying politeness and compassion to others is super important in that it shows her that you were raised the right way and that she can hopefully show you off to her parents. That's it. My two yen on this serious subject: (this will span several comments because it is too long to post all as one) Part 1. First a bit about me: I have never lived in Japan however I have travelled there about a dozen times, I live in Vancouver which is a very popular destination for young Japanese people to visit on a 1 year work/study visa usually with the intention to learn English. For that reason there are quite a few Japanese Izakaya (pubs) in Vancouver one of which I have been a regular customer for years. I have dated a couple of Japanese girls one of whom is now my wife (hence the frequent visits to Japan). The Izakaya I frequent is staffed by young Japanese people and many of the customers are Japanese so I have had the opportunity to meet many young Japanese girls and guys there, several of whom I have kept in touch with after they return to Japan. Also at this Izakaya I have witnessed many a Canadian guy try to pick up a Japanese girl and generally fail miserably. When I travel to Japan my wife likes to spend most of her time with her family (I can only handle about 3 or 4 days of that) so I usually spend a couple of weeks travelling around by myself and hanging out with Japanese friends that either I have met here in Vancouver or have met in Japan. Also I know several Japanese girls who have Canadian husbands or boyfriends. I apologize for the long winded introduction but I just wanted to get across that I am pretty much an expert on this extremely important issue. First of all, if you hold any Western stereotype that Japanese girls are submissive or something like that you better throw that out the door because you are very wrong. So while the girl you are trying to pick up might be smiling and laughing she may very well be thinking “please go away”. In Japanese there is an expression “kuuki yomenai”. It literally means “can’t read the air” and is something similar to “can’t take a hint”. It is used in the sense that you can’t read body language or understand what is being indirectly said to you. I have a couple of friends who have tried to pick up a Japanese girl, got their contact info, made plans for a future date only to be told “oh sorry, I’cant, something else came up, let’s meet another time”. After trying this a few times they are confused because “they can’t read the air”. Sometimes they can be quite direct. I once approached girl in a bar in Tokyo who I mistook as someone I had met on a previous visit. She just said “Bye bye”. Lol… ok, I got it. I think Chiaki’s comments about being a gentleman, funny and kind are probably her most important points. Like Chris I was pretty shattered that she didn’t include either England or Canada in her countries of preference since I have the misfortune apparently, form a Japanese girls perspective, of being a citizen of both countries. I have neither a big back nor giant pop-out veins but that is an interesting insight. Also I think being able to speak even a little bit of Japanese goes a long way, and also having a genuine interest in Japanese culture and some degree of understanding or etiquette and manners is quite important. I have been told a few times from my Japanese friends that they consider this important. Another tactic is to make friends with a Japanese guy first. Then you can get invited to parties and get introduced to his friends. Years ago I met a Japanese guy in Vancouver who was very eager to improve his English so he invited himself over to my place a few times. Then he asked if it was ok if he invited some of his friends. “sure” I said. Pretty soon every weekend was a drunk English lesson at my place with about 10 of his friends, both girls and guys, and that is how I started to learn Japanese and ultimately met my wife. If you really want to date a Japanese girl it also depends on the context. If you are just visiting Japan for a short visit, that will be difficult. If you live in a place where there are Japanese girls who have long term work/study visas the that is a little more realistic.

Of the 20+ years I've lived in Japan the only pick-up line I used from what was given here is the "will you be my language teacher" one and it actually worked decently. Chiaki's replies on what characteristics women here in Japan like is accurate as far as personality and looks. I've found that nationality preferences is very varied. Girls who like R&B and Hip Hop for example will generally prefer African-ethnic people over Caucasions. You won't know for sure unless you talk to them.
