When dealing with a narcissistic colleague, none of these approaches work. If you aren't dealing with a narcissistic colleague, you won't have ongoing problems with them in the first place.

All of my coworkers annoy me in some way. There is one that is loud, another that complains all day, and another one is nosey and talks too much. All of the constantly gossiping and complaining all day. I try to ignore all of them. Unfortunately I can’t separate myself from them; We have to work together.

Your video dovetails nicely with my experience and thinking. I was regularly assaulted by gangs of children in my grade after school. This began after I skipped kindergarten. My role model then was an idol of my Mom’s, Dag Hammarskjold, the Swedish economist who became the second Secretary-General of the United Nation. I applied political economic analysis to this circumstance and determined that those in my grade had formed same-age societies due to the policy of social-promotion. As someone who was younger than my grade-mates, I naturally became a target of those societies. I therefore did not become angry with those in my grade, instead continuing to cultivate friendships with school-mates of all grades, as well as exploiting my skill in running and taking the advice of friends who told me of alternate routes home from school, which enabled me to maintain my pacifist leanings. In civic life, I have strongly advocated for a return to academic-promotion through course examinations as the sole means of moving from grade to grade. As a parent, I have strongly opposed the notion of “socialization” in schools and have instilled in my children a compassion for social pariahs and a willingness to stand up for the young and weak against social authority.

There was also a guy who would come to you're desk and talk gibberish non-stop for 15 minutes. He would do it 2 or 3 times a day. Then one day, he stopped coming to my desk. In fact, he actively avoided me. Turns out one of my coworkers told him I was a nutcase and I was charged with attempted murder of another coworker few yrs ago using my bare hands. He added the charges were dropped after the guy came out of a 4 month coma. Not sure how he comes up this stuff, but it was very effective. In return, I would call him whenever I saw the talker at his desk giving him an excuse to make the guy go away.

Its great advice. The one thing I didnt love is whenyou stated "dont change people, you cant". I find personally that when people say you cant it is usually not true. It is either they cant or they think its not worth doing. A lot of advice i come across revolves round changing yourself to accomodate for systems "you cant" change. I think this is great advice for followers but not for leaders.

I was at work and one of my coworkers belly ached because he was working on a day that was outside his availability (which he knew of a week ahead of time and never disputed it with management) so he knew that he was going into work that day. Then he said it sucked because he couldn't shower because he partied the previous night and had beer all in his hair... Whenever I tried to offer solutions to his problems, he would just blame management which he refused to go to anyway. Not to mention he talks behind everyone's backs and calls them names. Is it just best to let people like that complain rather than trying to help them out? Because every time I try to help this guy, he always ignores the advice and blames someone else for problems that he created.

I sit right next to a 40+ year old guy at work who is constantly sniffling, coughing, hacking, burping, smacking lips. What makes the situation more annoying is that he's also an A-hole to anyone and everyone and brags about childish things like speeding and talking back to police. He's also a huge know-it-all, who is constantly telling people that they are wrong about any random thing.

Hi Sucie. What you are about to read is not in my head nor is it a movie. It's a new reality for me at the job. There's something strange going on at the site in reference to me as an employee. Beyond the shadow of doubt, I know that someone has been going around defaming my good name and character in the building. As you know, this act is against the law. This is called defamation of character. Am I right? Why do I say this? Many of the people who have been friendly to me for more than two years have suddenly stopped communicating, especially when I am posted in the lobby. This new attitude towards me started about 5 weeks ago. I firmly believe that many of the employees from various departments are trying to make me feel unwanted hoping that I would leave the site. I spoke to several of my coworkers about what is happening to me. They told me to simply ignore the silent treatment, do my job and go home. Of course, this is easier said than done. There is a group effort to make me feel unwanted and uncomfortable. If I did something wrong or offended anyone, I would like to know exactly what I did that would compel a group of employees who have been saying hello to me for more than two years to suddenly stop all communications. By the way, this is only happening to me and not my coworkers. The silent treatment is only directed to me when posted in the lobby. I don't know who started the rumor, why the rumor was started and what exactly was spread about me. The rumor has ruined my good name and character not only in the lobby but on different floors and into several departments. If one or two employees decided that they no longer wanted to talk to me, I would not bother to post my story here. However, the number of people who continue to give me the silent treatment grows on a daily basis. Everyday, without exaggeration, a new employee is added to the DON'T TALK TO ME list, if you know what I mean. It is hard to work and be ignored. I make a decent salary and so walking away from the job is not a good idea. Questions: 1. What is the best way to handle the silent treatment at the job? 2. What would you do in my situation? 3. What is the main reason for giving an employee the silent treatment? Thank you.

Had this one guy who'd always be the first in line at the self serve soup station in the office cafeteria. He made everyone in line wait for 10 min so he could scoop out whatever the premium ingredient was. If it was Italian Wedding soup, he'd fish out every meatball. If it was chicken noodle, he'd hoard all the chicken meat. Then one day, he did it when a visiting executive was 2nd in line. He was banned from the cafeteria after that.

Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate it. I definitely understand how this could be a tough and sensitive situation. Maybe you could possibly have a kind and polite, and yet direct with the coworker and explain your role and how it works. That way as well, if you have to elevate the issue to a supervisor, you've also tried to be as clear as possible about expectations, etc.

What happens when you're put in a position of psuedo authority, but the new hires are unpleasant, highly reactionary to any criticism or correction or even requests, lazy, manipulative, deceitful, wasteful, clutterbugs, make decisions that make zero sense, have zero concept of time or cost efficiency, and instead of working like to hang around and regale you about how everybody hates them? Nothing new that I didn't know.... Your method works if it is about normal annoyance that you talked about. My coworker who sits right beside me clears her throat really loud every 1-3 minutes. I am not joking. I counted them. I know she cannot help it nor her fault. It could be medical condition or anxiety/tic. But I am literally losing my mind. I spoke to the manager and she is okay for me to work at different desk but only part of the day - couple of hours for me to take a break from listening to her. It's nice to be away from her for few hours but the trouble is, our office is so small and walls are paper-thin, I can hear her anywhere I go. Even in the bathroom. I tried ear buds, listened to music/pod cast etc., meditation, breathing technique, going for a walk during break, etc. I didn't try to change her. I tried different method to not to be consumed by it. Nothing worked. I cannot just quit the job and find another because I am a single parent and where I live, it is hard to find another position in the industry I am in with similar pay. I've been working with her for a year. I am at the end of the rope. Today, it was so irritating, I wanted to cry and get up and leave. Even after I came home, that noise is in my ear, I just wanted to cry. Any advise that I haven't tried?
