Thanks so much! This video helped improve my 1v1 skills from a defending point of view. It also assisted me as an attacker by helping me understand what the defender targets when defending.

Good effort buddy and props for trying to break down what seems like a basic enough thing, but is in a fact a highly technical and fluid action: defending a 1 v 1. However I have two points to make. 1) You say to close the distance to 'about a yard' but that should (imho) be to what we used to call 'touch tight'. You close the distance steadily and try to make contact using an outstretched arm (touch-tight). Then you can influence the opponent's movement and balance and adjust yours to match or counter it and to help make the tackle and to recover if it fails. 2) Your body position from 2:12- 2:50 would be better reversed against this opponent. They are right-footed and you are showing them the easier side for their preferred foot. Granted, you might be showing them the outside but if you reversed you are taking their right-foot away from them and forcing them too wide to hurt you or on to their weaker foot. Also your surf-board position needs to crouch lower and bend more at the hips so you are in what i'd call a lower 'start-up position' (quads and calves are more loaded to make counter movement more explosive) making your reaction time much quicker. But respect for tackling an under-researched aspect of defending.

Thanks for this mate! Honestly, the beauty is football is open to interpretation no coach would ever advocate what they say is exactly how everything should be done. Trust me I am learning new viewpoints everyday, including yours. All people need to really take from this video IMO is the 3 P's - Pressure, positioning, patience. Easy to remember and prevents inexperienced players from rushing in (which is the main thing players do wrong in 1v1 defending). Aside from that the small details you mention are exactly that - small details. Of course we want to show the player onto their weaker foot but kids watching this may well want to worry about the fundamentals firstly. Touch tight...this is an interesting one. You see it a lot in American sports like basketball etc but I'll be honest bud in England coaches are not really telling the defender to be worrying about this (touching the player in front of you). We say touch tight sure to give a good gauge of how far away you should be - 'about a yard' like I say. Ultimately, if a player is flat footed and slow they will not be a good 1v1 defender anyway. I'd also completely disagree with crouching too low. When we use terms like 'surf-board' this is literally to help novices understand to be sideways on. If i tell a kid to be sideways on he/she may be like 'yeh but sideways to what?'. But saying surfboard they understand ok he means facing forwards but being side ways to facing this way - this is coaching bud. RE crouching deeper and really low this is a no no for me. If you are too low personally I think it is actually harder to react from down there rather than in between a deep squat and being upright. Again my friend your time to write this and produce conversation is truly appreciated.

I play as a defender for years (CB). My new coach said to rush and be vaery close to them. Which i dont because they will dribble me and score. Now i am on the bench. 0 defending knowledge by the coach
@WantTheBall Жыл бұрын
For me you would only rush in if you can see the player has taken a heavy touch and the ball is there to be won. Otherwise you need to time what you are doing in the press. Often we can force mistakes and slow the attack down just by getting in and then slowing to a couple of feet from the player with ball. The second you over engage the ball carrier will know to just push it past you 👍

Brilliant video. I love the Quick Coerver version for coaches but I find this one visually demonstrates it better for players, particularly younger players. Hat tip to you. One other thing I would mention is often you want to be patient because often the goal is to get enough time for the defenders to recover and to slow down the attack. A young attacker will often waste the opportunity by just being indecisive albeit better more versed players probably won't fall into the same trap.

100% that’s a fantastic point. Slowing down the attacker allows defensive cover to get back. Thank you for the kind words 🙏

Good video, but when you talk about pressure you say to get close, but not too close, within about a yard. The at the end when you talk about patience you say to give them space and you are showing being two plus yards off of them. Which is it?
@WantTheBall3 ай бұрын
Thanks for this and it is a good observation. I think sometimes we can’t be too precise but by me saying a yard generally I’m meaning close but not literally on their toes. Patience re you may move back with them I while reading what they are going to do I would still recommend the same distance so in answer we can still say a yard maybe max a couple and if I’m further away in the video this is probably affording the ball carrier too much mistake and this is not correct.
