Hey MIXUP , always a pleasure big man , this past weekend here in Montgomery I picked up a model 1890 .22 short only , it was priced too cheap to pass up , the man told me he was selling it for a friend who's father passed away and it hadn't been touched in 40 years , so I brought it home and pulled up your video , many thanks , I took it apart and inspected it , it is mechanically solid , nothing loose and very little wear , when shaking the rifle it doesn't make any sound , so used very little , I used your copper penny trick featured in another video and removed all surface rust , wiped everything down with oil and put it all back together , it has good wood , no cracks or repairs , no missing parts or screws , and all serial numbers match . Down side it has very little bluing left on it , so doesn't look aesthetically pleasing , but it will be a wonderful shooter , I took it to my gunsmith to inspect , he said it's in much better condition mechanically than most he sees , and told me he didn't recommend me having it reblued as it will cut down on the value later on , told me to use car wax on it to prevent any further damage to the finish . So I will use Turtle Wax on it and let it ride . Take care big man ,

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! I have a Model 62A that my Dad bought me in 1955, when I was 12 years old (67 years ago). I'm 79 now and still shoot the Model 62A several times a week, mostly at squirrels. The gun is in excellent shape, cleaned regularly. I need to do some maintenance on a spent cartridge in the breech. Your video was so clear and understandable, covering all the steps of disassembly, that I felt comfortable in doing so! Reason for disassembly...Well, I needed to shoot a couple of LR bird shot cartridges the other day, so I unloaded all the .22 short ammunition and loaded the two rounds of birdshot in the magazine. I fired the first round and when I went to chamber the second round, the spent cartridge didn't eject and the second live round was in the carrier! My guess is that the crimp in the birdshot expanded tightly enough that it didn't eject. I will examine the ejector when I disassemble it today. Thanks for the best 62A maintenance information out there!!!

Great video, you explained the process very well. I am a gunsmith and have taken these models apart many times. You didn’t have much farther to go and it’s not that difficult. The small capture pin can be tapped lightly from the side that looks the thinnest. A little PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench may be needed. These are easily replaced with a small wire if needed, it’s just to hold the takedown screw. After that pull the sleeve and you are basically done. There’s a small screw holding the lifter spring, this spring gets weak and is known to break but they are readily available. Be carful with the trigger spring screw, they are frequently rusted in place based on their location and easily broken. You have to remove the upper cap screw to access and I usually leave it alone unless it needs to be replaced. Numrich is a great parts source and so is Homestead for these rifles. I have a 1890 made in 1899, hard to beat. Happy shooting!

I handled a 1890 .22 Short at a shop today, I might have to get it. It is in about the condition of yours, shows plenty of use but I like that look, honest wear. They are great old rifles from a time when a boy was expected to have a .22 and know how to use it responsibly, in that respect those were better days.

mixup98 Well, the rifle didn't turn out very well. Upon running a snug patch down the barrel I found a bulge, The rifle had been restored, it looked very good but I wouldn't have bought it had I known. I don't think the seller knew, he was the consignor. 7 of the 8 barrel flats had been expertly filed to eliminate the bulge, the flat with the script was where the external flaw still showed. The consignor said to return it, my FFL has it now and it will ship tomorrow. I'll find another, I'll stick with unrestored this time. .22 WRF is around $15 a box, not for plinking!

I'll still be looking for one in .22 WRF but this one is good. SN 486xxx.

@@mixup98 10-4! My gun is NIB and completely dry! Where do you recommend applying oil, besides the bolt rails and the feeding assembly pivot points? Should ALL of the internals be kept dry save for the pivot and sliding contact points? JUST discovered from this video that one must insert a pull through at the crown and install a patch when it reaches the breech, due to the bolt being mechanically attached to the slide lever. I guess that the inside of the mag tube remains dry? Again, thanx for any detailed info:)-John in Texas

@@TheGearhead222 The Rossi owners manual states to "use lubricants sparingly on the moving parts of your firearm". I would use just a small amount of lube on the bolt rails and pivot points and I would strongly suggest that you keep the inside of the mag tube dry as oil can contaminate .22 ammo. Here is a link to the Model 62 manual if you need it. Page 8 discusses the sparingly use of lubricants: pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/rossi_pump_22.pdf

I just finished disassembling and cleaning my Grandfathers Model 90 after viewing your video. Thank you for helping me complete this task. However, when removing the outer magazine tube there was a leaf spring between the barrel and the tube that pushes against the inner magazine tube though a cutout in the outer magazine tube. I was quite surprised when it popped onto the floor when I removed the tube because it was not in your video nor was I expecting it. I don't know if this is something different from the Model 06 in your video or if it was just missing from your rifle but I wanted people viewing this video who own Model 90's to be aware of it. It takes a little more effort to remove the outer magazine tube and it takes much more effort to get it all aligned when putting it all back together reassembling the rifle. It does function much better after removing 70+ years of grime and dirt. Thanks again.

HenchmanofAres ...the Winchester Model 90 rifle went through several design changes over the years and apparently this leaf spring was one of those changes (probably to be more cost effective or make reassembly easier). It's older than dirt though and it has been my go-to rattlesnake gun since a now deceased neighbor gave it to me for helping him with a garage sale. It is dead-on accurate. I have had a Model 1906 for many years. I love it. I only shoot .22 Shorts in it nowadays since it has become basically worn out since being used as a ranch rifle here in NM from 1911 until 2011 when I bought it...for ten bucks! Best ten dollars I ever spent, lol. I've supplemented it with two Rossis. An early Model 62SA (very well made with forged and polished internal parts.) And a Model 59 in .22 Magnum. The M59 has investment cast internals and while still basically like new when I bought it, the action was quite rough. I used your tutorial to take it apart and polish some parts inside. Now it's as smooth as butter. I really appreciated your clear and concise instructions. Thank you again. This is absolutely as good as ANY disassembly video on KZbin.

I have a model 90 in .22 Long. Looks very nice with low round count but the carrier/cartridge cutoff on mine looks a bit different. Yours has 2 pieces as you showed at the 6:00 mark. Mine is one piece and does not appear bent or broken but it will not raise and feed ammo into the carrier. I have to basically have no tension on the rounds in the tube mag for it to work and even that is hit and miss. Additionally, when this happens, the bolt goes back most all the way but needs that extra 1/4 inch to raise the lifter to get the next round up to chamber height and won't go all the way back. Gun is super clean with low round count. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I no longer have the rifle shown in this video which makes it difficult to visualize the problem you are having with your rifle. You may have to take your rifle to a gunsmith. I suspect it is probably a weak spring or a broke part. Hopefully you will be able to find the problem and perhaps order the correct part. I wish I could be of more help. Thanks I'm From Brazil and i have a Winchester 1904 Model and winchester 190.. Great video! But I can't find nothing about this gun, the 1904 model... I searched the web and found nothing about this old and beautiful weapon. I find in web only 1890, 1906 and 62 models, but nothing for my model. anyway, thanks for sharing this video, you help me to disassemble and clean my... that was very dirty

I have one of these now, and it's my first, so I'm trying to learn about cleaning. It probably hasn't been shot for 40+ years, so I had a local gun range check it for safety. I think they also cleaned it, but not 100% sure on that. Been out shooting with it a couple times now, so cleaning of it is next for me. At the 4:40 mark in the video (cleaning the receiver I think with a nylon brush?), is there no reason to use a solvent there? And, sliding the inner tube into the magazine tube on mine, it's like it may have grease on it. I thought that seemed right. My more knowledgeable gun buddy said it needed to be cleaned - too much gunk on it. Should that push rod (the tube that goes inside the magazine tube) be coated with some type of gun oil, or grease, or ? Does that magazine tube need to be cleaned?

Hello Sir, thank-you for the great instructional video. I have a pre-war model 62 and the bolt does not lock with hammer cocked. What would be causing the bolt to not lock when cocked? Thank-you.

That's a really nice firearm and piece of history. I would stop at the exact same takedown point as you did ( I know my limitations :) How long have you owned that rifle and where did you come across it? Thanks for sharing!

My grandpa willed me his Winchester 1906. I wanted to clean it but when I started to disassemble the bolt group but the rear screw is missing and looks stripped and the forward one is stripped and will not come out. Do I need to replace the breech bolt as I think the screws screw in to it correct?

I have had a 1906 for years now but it was incomplete. I recently came across parts I've been looking for and have not been able to find. While going over the gun to make sure I identify all the parts I need (there are a bunch) I noticed the carrier has a lot of left to right wobble as if the hole is wallowed out a bit. I haven't taken the take down screw out to see but, it has a lot of play and is not tight. Should I have any play in the carrier?

Nice video. I have been a subscriber for some time but had not noticed this video. I have an old picture of a rifle I have taken in 1915 at Relief Hill CA. That Rifle is an amalgamation of a 1890 stock assembly and a 1906 barrel assembly. Fun to shoot but the lock-up is far from tight. It shoots 22LR just fine but…. Ten or so years ago I ran across a 62A. I consider it the shooter. I got here while researching if there were any videos on Taurus 172’s. Same basic design in 17HMR and made in Brazil. I had to replace a screw on the 1890/1906. I believe it got those form “Wisner’s Inc”.

Great video. Mine will not seat back into battery after actuating the action. If i push the fireing pin in with my finger it drops down into battery.I suspect it will be obvious why once I take it apart.

Great video sir, I jus bought a Winchester model 90 mfg 1899 and the barrel appears to be loose by 1/8" turn either way....by turning the barrel to left appears to tighten to receiver but then pump action is very tight....slight turn to right causes top sites to appear not centered of aim. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could offer you some advice but I don't have any experience on how to fix your barrel problem. Maybe one of my viewers can help but I have a feeling you may have to take it to a gunsmith to have it fixed.

Good morning Ronald. Thank you for the feedback on my video. My son owns a Remington Model 12 and I can't make any promises but I will see if I can borrow his rifle and do a disassembly video on it.

I own 2 of these vintage works of wonder. An original 2nd gen, marching numbers 1890, in 22Wrf as well as a 1906, not nearly in as good of shape. Apparently my rifle is worth some serious cash, as I’ve been offered over $10k for it, but nope. Won’t sell it. The 1906 is in decent shape but the barrel isn’t exactly nice. Will be fixing this amazing gun soon. Thanks for the video

Thanks very much for this super helpful video! I have a question maybe you could help, I have a couple of these 1906 and when the bolt is open and the hammer is pressing up on it, the bolt sticks a little due to friction against the receiver slides. I have some other Model 62 rifles which do not exhibit this sticking. Is there anything simple I can do to adjust the hammer upwards pressure on the bolt, without butchering these historical rifles? thanks again!

What .22 ammo do you shoot with. My barrel says short-Long it long rifle but can’t cycle the 22 lr. Haven’t tried short or long yet
@mixup98 Жыл бұрын
If your rifle is chambered for short/long then it will not chamber .22 LR ammo, which uses a heavier and longer bullet.

Can you show how to install the little flat spring under the forward magazine ring. The one that puts a little friction on the inner tube so the inner tube doesn't fall out.

My fingers seem to be very acidic. For some reason, everything I touch gets rusty. So I will use nitrile gloves. But... What oil do you recommend? Does it dry? And how long does it last in storage?
@DG-kq8zf4 жыл бұрын
Acidic fingers. Even after washing and using solvent on them. Everything I touch rusts. LOL... I have to use nitrile gloves.
@mixup984 жыл бұрын
You can use light gun oil found at any gun shop or you can use 3-In-1 oil on a clean cloth. I have also used WD40 for many years as a rust preventative.
