Thanks so much for your discussion of Consecrated Virginity. I just spoke, this week, with a young woman who is discerning this vocation. Just to clarify, Consecrated Virgins do not make vows. Their consecration is made by their Diocesan Bishop, and is much like the ordination of a priest. They are asked three questions during the Rite of Consecration: (briefly) if they are resolved to remain virgins in service to God & Church; to follow Christ as a witness to God's love & as a convincing sign of heaven; to accept solemn consecration as a Bride of Christ. To all three, we joyfully respond "I am." The intention to live in perfect chastity is then renewed (since she's been living the life of a virgin) and is then followed by the Bishop's Prayer of Consecration. (See consecratedvirgins.org for more detail.)

It seems to me it is better to talk with consecrated virgins about the vocation. Christopher West does not really understand this vocation.

No, you must be consecrated by a bishop.

That can be done, but then it's called differently (I don't know the term in english, maybe private commitment/promise). A friend of mine did that in private. After some years she made an "official" promise to God in a Mass, but not to the bishop, she did not promise to be obedient to someone else than God. And as far as I understood, the Mass would not even have been necessary, because the promise itself was always just between her and God. She did spiritual direction to find the right path for her.

You ask a MAN about an exclusively feminine attribute, charism and vocation like virginity? Seriously?
