I absolutely LOVE your two minute accent videos. I teach English in Germany and use these videos with high level students who are interested in accents. They genuinely sound legit when saying the practice sentences! Thank you!

This was great, I'm so glad you zeroed in on the individual phonetics. Would love a longer, say, 20 minute video where you do drills on these individual sounds - I'd listen a LOT to that!

English is my second language. I challenged myself to mimic all the British accent and speak them very fluently. It’s quite difficult ‘cause the only British accent I perfectly understand is the RP accent… As I said before, it’s not gonna be easy. But I won’t stop until I got it. I know my English is not the best, But I’m learning and improving every day. If someone read this I just wanna say someday we are gonna accomplish our goals. No matter how difficult they are. I truly believe with discipline and persistence we can do whatever.

Wow. Really interesting - just happened upon your channel today and your videos will keep me busy for a while! Probably not a very popular request, but I'd be impressed if you could do a video on the Black Country and Brummie accents. BC dialect is dying out as the older generation shuffle off this mortal coil. I know I've had to act as an interpreter between Black Countrians and Brummies before now!

I'm Australian and I can confirm that; I think it's due to the fact that a lot of Poms who came to the colonies were from East London/Wessex way and so had a big influence on the accent which developed in Australia ;)

I remember in the earlier noughties, queueing up at the tills in the Virgin Oxford Street store in central London, when I heard the attendant shout "Next to pAh-y please!". I knew there and then, as a budding foreign English speaker, his was a cockney accent. I loved it!

Cockney originates from London working class and was looked down upon, considered as an inferior for a very long time, so yeah, you're right. There's a reason why it sounds a bit uneducated. Anyway, it's grown to become one of the most liked English accents which has menaged to do a breakthrough within English social classes: Estuary accent is another one which basically is a mixture of Cockney and Received Pronuncation. Linguists say it's becoming a replacement for Received Pronunciation these days and not even Prince Harry speaks with a straight Received Pronunciation anymore. So even in the upper class there's a shift towards Estuary English. My point is it's very interesting to see how Cockney has menaged to become a well liked dialect from the status of an inferior one. But of course we're all different. Cockney is my favourite English dialect but not everyone has to like it.

I tried this out and my friends said I sounded more Australian than Cockney. What might I be doing wrong or are the two accents just that similar?
@MattPocock8 жыл бұрын
There are some similarities, but make sure you avoid the upspeak that's really common among Aussies. Cockneys just don't have it. Say 'January, February, March'. Aussies go up at the end, but cockneys will go down. Hope this helps!

It worries me that people use this accent more and more. It makes people sound like they are dumb and I'm sure that in very few years, the closest accent to a Standard will be the Australian or the Irish. Received pronunciation and Estuary English are my favourite accents and the easiest to understand too. The brava instead of brother, the fink instead of think etc just sound stupid.
