@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don’t have a video that focuses solely on posture (I’ll probably do one this year) but I do have a lot of videos that cover the subject indirectly. Basically, focus on strengthening the backside of the body extra. Focus on loosening over tight front side of the body muscles. Then also try to get clients to assume better posture on a day to day basis (get them to stand more, slouch less, etc) There’s more to it than that, but that should give you an idea!

Wall sits can be much more difficult for certain leg proportions and easier for others so I'm not sure how much you get out of the assessment. A long femur individual may be exerting twice the effort for the same time as an average individual. Well idk if it's actually 2times but there is definitely a noticeable difference.

You do have to buy the testing kit. If you’re interested in it, it’s worth doing their level 1 certification too. Jeff, my problem with measurement is that if the person gets more muscle, it will show more leg or arm and this person may think is not loosing weight.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation4 жыл бұрын
Maria Liliana Franco this is a fair point. I would say however, if your client is losing weight their circumference measurements will still shrink considerably even if they gain a little bit of muscle mass. Fat mass takes up far more space than muscle mass, so unless your client is a bodybuilder you’re unlikely to notice an increase in size due to muscle mass.

No, most of the time you won’t need clearance. You only need clearance if they have a concerning underlying condition. The Par Q, and Health History questionnaire should reveal if your client has any of those issues.

I have a question. How do you determine the amount of weight that is appropriate for a client at different parts of the workout? For example, when doing heavy compound exercises, we would aim for 4-6 reps. But how do you assess the amount of weight that a client should lift? How do you know the maximum they can lift, and use that to determine how heavy the weight should be? What’s the best way to assess them on this? Do you use a formula to calculate this, or do you just guess based on observation? I’m trying to learn more about how to choose the right weight, but I haven’t been able to find any videos that talk about it 🤔

In all aspects of training there’s some guess work involved. I would recommend starting clients off relatively light, perfecting form as much as possible, and only going heavy later on. After some time working out with lower weights but increased reps you should have an educated idea of where they should be with heavier weights/rep ranges.

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Thank you. Yes, it would probably be best to start clients off with a light weight or no weight at all when working on getting the form right. Maybe I can guess how much weight they can handle by asking them to rate how difficult they find the exercise. I’m not sure if I can correctly determine this on the first session though. I just thought there would be a specific formula and process for determining the right weight for a client. NASM even has a *‘One Repetition Maximum Conversion’* chart on pages 815 - 822 of the 7th edition textbook (but it’s not very clear to me how this works). They also describe the proper intensity to use on certain phases of the OPT model as a percentage of the one rep maximum. For example, on the Power phase, they describe the resistance training as 1 - 5 RM for strength, and 8 - 10 RM (or 30 - 45% of 1RM) for power. It’s kind of confusing to understand these numbers and apply them though.

Would you recommend the step test for clients who already have quite good cardiovascular fitness, or only for beginners? It seems a little easy, that's all, but when I look at some of the other cardio fitness tests out there, they seem too difficult/complicated.... and I'm not sure what a happy medium would be?! Would it work to have clients run/cycle/row for 5 minutes as fast as they can, for example, and then measure their distance and HR? Thanks for all the informative videos!! :)

Thank you for the kind words! Always remember that the point of an assessment isn’t to challenge someone, it’s to assess them. If they’re already strong in some areas that will show on the assessment, as it should. The three minute step test is good for all fitness levels. If they’re really physically fit in a certain area already, they’ll just score in one of the top categories for that specific test. They may not score as high in other areas of the assessment. I do include the airdyne test in my assessment as well, but that’s not because the step test is too easy for anyone. It’s included because multiple tests, and variety, is a good thing.

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation That makes a lot of sense!! Thank you so much, I'll keep that in mind when planning my assessments. :)
