I do somewhat. If I’m working with multiple clients at the same time or if I am working with a client online I will just do an overhead squat assessment, a shoulder ROM test and a hip flexion test. It’s much simpler that way. I have a full video planned where I will show how to do a online training assessment. That may offer some useful info

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation I mean if your facility sees that you 'waste' most your session on some fancy something instead of 'actually training' you clients, you'd be fired. I'm speaking about my country ofc. Just yeasterday I did my second stage of interview for a trainer position where I had to 'train' a chief trainer as if he was my client. And he was genuinely surprised that I 'really had to ask all those excessive questions'. Questions btw were like a baseline client assessment of ISSA methodology (I'm certified with them, and no, no one seems to know what ISSA even is here). I need to move to a more civilized country 😂

I'm going to be a bit negative here. I'm four minutes into this video, and it is still talking about measuring body fat. In my opinion, this is a waste of the client's time. I've been working out for years. I can look in the mirror and see if I'm a bit heavy or bit light. Takes five seconds. Done. You should be able to look at a client and access in five seconds whether this person is going to want to lose weight or whether they should have other priorities. Beyond that, the additional information is pointless. If I were the client, I'd be a frustrated that you were wasting my time. However, I will continue viewing. I'm very interested in the posture part of this video.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your point of view. We use measuring body fat as an assessment tool to measure progress towards the clients goal and a starting point (yes, usually this does involve the percentage decreasing). Doing their circumference measurements and body fat takes about 5 minutes and clients like it as it gives them some insight into where they’re starting from. They also like to track the changes and progress they make in BF and inches, alongside other assessments. looking at a client doesn’t determine their goals-they do. Also, keep in mind no part of the assessment is 100% necessary. If someone doesn’t feel a certain section of the assessment isn’t worth their time, you don’t do that part.

Jeff, my problem with measurement is that if the person gets more muscle, it will show more leg or arm and this person may think is not loosing weight.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 4 жыл бұрын
Maria Liliana Franco this is a fair point. I would say however, if your client is losing weight their circumference measurements will still shrink considerably even if they gain a little bit of muscle mass. Fat mass takes up far more space than muscle mass, so unless your client is a bodybuilder you’re unlikely to notice an increase in size due to muscle mass.

Jeff, two questions: I have a new client who is 72YO and has knee replacements. What assessments would you recommend I do with her? I do not think some of the FMS tests would be appropriate because of her knee replacements and her lack of conditioning.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! I have clients like this often! She may still be able to do much of the FMS. Hurdle step, shoulder mobility, active straight leg raise, and trunk stability push-up will all still likely work for you client assuming that she doesn’t have anything else wrong. I would skip the other tests with her though. Also, the three minute step test, push-up test, and plank test should still be ok to do with her. Just make sure you ask her if she is comfortable doing everything, and if anything is painful for her at all, stop, and move onto the next thing. If you have any other questions, let me know!

@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don’t have a video that focuses solely on posture (I’ll probably do one this year) but I do have a lot of videos that cover the subject indirectly. Basically, focus on strengthening the backside of the body extra. Focus on loosening over tight front side of the body muscles. Then also try to get clients to assume better posture on a day to day basis (get them to stand more, slouch less, etc) There’s more to it than that, but that should give you an idea!

Vanessa Knights Thanks! We’ll have to get to that caliper video at some point soon. Good question on the photos though. I will take pictures with any client that is willing. I find that with my demographic in my area most are not willing to do pics I didn’t include it in the video

Jeff, I have some questions. BTW I've subscribed lol The assessments have made me scratch my head a lot whilst studying to be a personal trainer. Anyways, potential clients who are annoyed or bored that they have to 'do' assessments that want to jump right into weight training, how would you handle this? You would have to terminate the session, right? Another thing too, it's not okay to do the same assessments for each client is it? I'm studying with ACE. So using the IFT model. Example, still in the phase 1; What if I found tightness in the adductors and abductors. Would it be ok to use the machines (which have helped my squat and lunge form considerably) considering it is technically resistance or would you (personally as a trainer) use bands or just body weight in the beginning - phase 1? Sorry for all of the questions. I don't know a lot of established trainers and I've been scoping out your videos on the ACE exam for months now! lol Love to hear back from you!

Thanks for the support! It’s very appreciated! If I have a client that would really rather just jump into training then I’ll skip the assessment. Assessments are recommended but not mandatory. I think machines are totally fine! If you feel like they’ll benefit your client, use them! I wouldn’t necessarily just do body weight with any client. Pretty much any client can handle some level of external load, whether that’s in the form of free weights, cables, bands, etc. Some assessments will be more appropriate for some clients rather than others. It’s probably best to have a standard assessment process and then modify/remove certain parts of the assessment if they won’t benefit a specific client. Hopefully, that helps! If you have any other questions let me know!

@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation

Kyphotic postures are pretty common. It’s more due to lifestyle (spending too much time seated slouching) It sounds like you’re training is going well and you’re doing the right things though.

Question. I just got a job that gives a free consultation and a small workout session on the same day when they sign up for the gym. Got any tips on what I should do? I've interned at small gyms that don't do this
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 2 жыл бұрын
How much time do you have? This is what we do in my studio. The first half of the consultation is tour, going over goals, history, current nutrition, health history etc, then with whatever time we have remaining, we take them through a sample workout. Usually this is about 6-8 exercises, twice through, that don’t require a ton of coaching (ex: TRX, lateral band walks, assisted push-ups, plank, tricep push downs, etc.). Generally about 35-45 minutes spent on chatting with client, about 20-25 or so workout and then wrap up.

how did you determine the numbers for that chart? where it says "below average" "average", etc.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 3 жыл бұрын
For some of the tests such as the push-up, plank, and walls sit tests, we took the average of a few different online resources to create those numbers. The 3 minute step test is originally from the YMCA I believe but is pretty widely used in many fitness assessments. We created our own numbers for the airdyne test. Those numbers were derived by data from the 100 or so clients at Commence Fitness.

Wall sits can be much more difficult for certain leg proportions and easier for others so I'm not sure how much you get out of the assessment. A long femur individual may be exerting twice the effort for the same time as an average individual. Well idk if it's actually 2times but there is definitely a noticeable difference.

That will be true of almost any exercise. Nothing is perfect for everyone. It doesn’t decrease the effectiveness of the assessment.

Hey man, the only version that we currently have for the assessment is the version that we created on Canva which is free to download at this link www.sortahealthylifestyle.com/downloads We might create another downloadable version at some point in the future but for right now, all you have to do is download this one and print it off. If you want to modify it, you should be able to do so in a few different apps such as Canva. Hopefully that clears up any questions that you might have!
