Hiji techniques are my favorite when I teach Aikido. I will definitely add this to my practical applications when I teach Aikido. In Pekiti Tirsia we have something very similar but obviously the throw at the end is more of a takedown with elbow destruction and we apply a lot of slapping Atemi with entering and moving to the opponents other hand. The combination of Aikido and FMA is wonderful in my opinion. This is an awesome video.

Awesome stuff, and looking forward to seeing how you are teaching Ukemi, and the Why? Behind it! I usually share that Ukemi is for us, so we may go 100% w/o concern of safety to train at highest possible level and that Ukemi is an asset, not a loss as other arts have taught as a last resort, our First Ranking Exams are based purely on this skill!

Great video Lenny. Really looking forward to the ukemi video. Being thrown around and not taking proper ukemi isn't fun. #takingaikidoback

Without the throw, that is an awesome elbow lock; we do it all the time in Nami Ryu Aikiheiho (aikijujustu) , usually but not exclusively against knife attacks

there is a video up on YT showing an MMA guy breaking his opponent's arm with the 'sword cut' portion of this series.

Another great applicable technique! Thanks for explaining the type of opponent attack. // One question: Is it necessary that the arm comes up onto the top of the shoulder, before sliding the arm down for the sword-cut throw? Would it not work as well, if the sword-cut throw was done straight from the arm twist? Thanks so much Sensei.

Lenny Sly-- Love your videos and your instruction! I have a few questions: HYPOTHETICALLY: Given this particular application, after the initial block of the first punch, can this application be transitioned into a ''idori waza'' (kneeling technique)?? ANALYTICALLY: If the attacker strikes at me with a haymaker punch to the face, then it seems to me that I could apply a Hiji Kudaki and transition quickly (cutting down) into a 'idori waza'? LOGICALLY: In my eyes, I would want to get my assailant to the ground, quickly finish him (incapacitate), and extend an escape to the nearest exit.... OUTCOME 1: Is something like a "hiji kudaki-idori waza'' technique feasible? (I don't want to break apart a technique if it negatively affects the quality of the defense measure.) OUTCOME II: Is it best to do the entire original technique/application as designed? Or is the 'blending' ('aiki-otoshi')/ ('osumi') of those techniques like a physiological puzzle of defense? (As a martial artist of multiple systems, I want to analyze and apply Aikido even more than what I already understand of it.) I hope I made my question(s) clear. I look forward to your response(s).

hey Lenny is it when someone wants to be a black belt they have to show you or is it when they want to be an instructor

Hey Lenny! On that hiji, you overrotated his hand so that his thumb was on the bottom and his fingers closed in your direction. So it appears that you are applying the hiji to the side of the elbow as opposed to the back of the elbow. Is this correct?

GENERAL QUESTION: Are the names (Japanese) of the techniques/forms standard or universe across all (most) Aiki dojos - especially when transitional techniques are being deployed? Thx.
@premier697 жыл бұрын
+JaguarRoninI train Ju-jutsu Kai in Sweden and I recognize many of the technique names. I think they are universal.

Thanks. I suspect within some context, there is a taxonomy and within another there is expressiveness. :-)

Jesus! That's the poor soul you beat up yesterday. You must be running out of "volunteers." I like my arms and elbows not to flex backwards....😂BTW, I'm a subscriber now and I know zero about martial arts. These techniques would seem to work in any situation? At some point your real world opponent is going to open himself up and get jacked up!

Well hypothetical for youl Lenny- if lets say a UFC guy throws a hook punch- because lets face it they definitely all do. Why would this application fail against their hook punch- as a opposed to a street dweller throwing a hook punch. Is just because the UFC guy's hook punch would be better timed with more power driven behind it from practice?? And if that is the case- then could you possibly advance this technique to work against them is well??? Or could one simple add more practice onto this technique simply suffice to makeup for this deficiency? Because lets face it- street or no street- you do not know what the guy- ( or it could be a women) - is about to throw at you.. They could have martial arts training-i.e. a back ground in mma fighting competition boxing ect- and this could even be a motive for them taking up such a hostile stance against you. I.e They have the confidence that their strike is proficient enough to connect with you. In my opinion- the best kind of martial arts training- Aikido or otherwise but ESP Aikido- is one that is preparing you to cover all bases within that particular application. So I guess what I'm driving at here- this technique will work against a street dweller- and if they turn out to be something more- what then? I have nowhere to run- will Aikido fail me when I need it most because the other person has martial arts training? If this is the case- what could you suggest adding to the equation- or is your message more of a disclaimer- covering that type base? Other then that I really like this Aikido application- and in my opinion it could be used in the street as well as mma- with plenty of practice of course!
