The only level this will take your pull ups to is level 1. We call this the weak pull up, when a 4 year old gymnast can't yet do a pull up they use their abs and momentum to cheat the first 3/4 of the movement.

I love how haters get on here and bash crossfit. Why talk shit about something you know nothing about? So you can make yourself feel good about your bullshit workouts that aren’t doing anything for your fitness level? Ok well you can have it. Strict and kipping pull-ups are 2 different techniques, both are still pull-ups. It’s so obvious that people are super insecure about their own workouts. Kipping is a good way to train your body to be agile and coordinated like in gymnastics, but CrossFit sells it as a proper workout, not a means to a another skill. Doing 30 of these only makes you more prone to rotator cuff injuries and CrossFit instructors never mention that.

I did a pull up competition this morning, and no where in the rules does it say anything about kipping. So that's what I did. For workout purposes however, I don't kip. If I can't do anymore, I use resistance bands.

Contrary to all the unenlightened comments your shoulders need good compound strength before moving on to any of these explosive movements. Kipping is just to be fast and efficient to hit a certain stimulus. Do like a 5 or 10 min emom of strict pull ups try and set a number you can hit every set and allow at least 30 sec rest within each minute, don’t be afraid to scale and use a band or do negatives.

Larry Shrekker kipping allows the use of a more cardiovascular exercise whilst also utilizing the lats. Just because this is seen as a crossfit exercise, we do in fact do regular pull ups 👍

Standardized would be strict pull-up where your chest touches the bar, or at minimum where your chin gets pass the bar without using leg drive/kick. Note: I don't really have an opinion on kippings vs strict pullups; I enjoy watching the crossfit games and crossfit uses kippings. I personally have never done a kip; I'm currently working on weighted strict pull-ups. My ultimate goal would be to do a bar muscle up.

Peter Montalbano never should do any kipping pullups if you can't do at least 10 strict pull-ups. Their shoulders are not strong if they can't even do one strict pullup. Kipping and butterfly are only used to increase the volume of pullups during a metcon or competition.

Good form kipping pull-ups are a means to an end to standardise form in a competition setting, if you have the prerequisite strength, skill and mobility they are not dangerous. Criticising kipping pull-ups is like criticising high-jumpers for using the Fosby flop, because it's not a 'proper jump' and they land on their back

This isn’t a pull-up or a chin-up. If you can’t do a strict pull/chin up - not moving anything or using momentum to thrust up - use a band. You aren’t doing anything good for yourself by throwing yourself up there. That’s not a rep.

JonahLiftsWeights ... Yes, people should be trying to do strict pull-ups. But in the world of crossfit (which this video is aimed at), kipping is the preferred method where time is a factor. A crossfit athlete (or even the general population) is able to perform more kips/per minute than strict pull-ups/per minute. The better question is why doesn't crossfit compete using strict pull-ups?

@vasilakoss ... But if you're actually competing in the crossfit games, 100 kipping pull ups is better than 1 strict pull up. Crossfit games use kipping, and crossfit is about doing as many reps in the shortest amount of time. Over the span of 1 minutes or 30 seconds, someone proficient in both kipping and a strict pullup can/and will do more kippings. No need to make things more difficult in the games when all other crossfit athletes does kips. I've never done a kipping myself; I'm currently working on my dead hang weighted strict pull-up.

Doesn't matter. This is insanely stupid. You will never get any progress on anything, and you're just breaking your back. This has nothing to do with a pull up, or "pulling up". This is swinging your chin to the bar height. No "pulling" element.

Is there any reason why crossfit chose kipping pull ups at first place? Instead of the "normal", strict pull up? I'm not doing crossfit, I don't say that they are shit exercise or anything like that. I'm really wondering why they do it. I can't see why a crossfit competition would be less "spectacular" for the crowd if they have to do strict pull ups before going on to the next exercise.

@@lilwondair4836 Well, it's because CrossFit has gone from "high intensity mixed training" to "do as many reps even if you don't do it right". CrossFit has taken a turn for the worse, and it's kinda like 3rd grade feminism. Used to be good, definition has become blurred and core motivation has changed for the worse. It's always better to do it full range of motion, with proper form, and these "kipping" moves will not let you progress to later be doing more, or harder moves. I hope i answered your question :) Edit: Mostly because you utilize a lot of momentum to pull you up, and not purely pulling yourself up with strength.

@@4PF7 I second doing proper form pull ups and obviously you can utilize momentum - I am aware of that, but I am just wondering as they do normal deadlifts, squats and other classical exercises. Yes, high intensity, lacking form due to being on the limit and so on, but in fact they do more or less proper deadlifts and such. But yeah, it wont look that good if they only do 7 pull ups instead of 30 kipping pullups

@@lilwondair4836 Yeah they have kinda swapped the importances of proper form, and reps. In reality a rep doesn't count if you don't have proper form, and "cheating" it to get more reps is kinda backwards. I'm kinda sad this thing has gotten so much traction.
