Thank you!! I just turned 50 I’m 5’3” and was 187lbs with 44.8% BMI 3 months ago. I decided to change my life…it’s now or now. So I joined the gym and hired a PT (she is a body builder) and she is AMAZING! So helpful! I felt like the weight just wasn’t coming off so I decided to do keto…it worked for me in the past, but this time I felt HORRIBLE! I found that eating the high protein and carbs made me feel so much better! (My trainer did not advise keto, she said high protein and carbs IS BEST ) so I decided to go back to the High protein and carbs using healthy carbs. I cut out Sugar unless it came straight from fruit. Stopped drinking everything except for water. Prior to changing my diet I basically drank 3 cups of coffee, several Pepsis and MAYBE a small bottle of water. I had migraines all the time and paining all over my body. Now I’m drinking 3 to 5 L of water a day. I feel so much better! The weight is coming off slowly but it could be that I’m gaining muscle from the weight training. Im down to 174 my BMI is AT 41.3% My problem is HOW do I get in enough protein??? I keep reading and seeing that if I don’t get enough protein my muscles can’t grow the way they should. And am I suppose to be weighing my meat before or after cooking it?

I agree! I would love it if Melissa would promote her videos and say they are weight loss and fitness goals for one over 50. It represents YOU and others who are striving to lose weight or work on a positive fitness in that age category. Yes, you’re over 40 and in fabulous shape, however an accurate title would give more hope of what’s possible to one 50 and beyond. ❤️ 💪🏽

I am 41. I had an very hard year in 2017. Lost 45 lbs. On accident because I was unable to eat. I got down to 114 lbs. But it was because my body was starving. I finally started to eat again and got pregnant at 39. I gained 73lbs while I was pregnant which isn't abnormal for me. But after I had my daughter my body never went back. I lost 30lbs right after and nothing more. So my metabolism has been through it! Lol. I have always lost weight with IF before but it isn't working anymore. I am so ready to get this weight off my body. Thank you for being such and inspiration. I need to start a steady habit of weight training. All of those carbs you mentioned spike my blood sugar. I can’t tolerate much carbs because blood sugar wont come down for more than a few hours. I was nearly diabetic 2 years ago. By lowering the carbs and losing weight I reversed that but I trend back in the wrong direction when I resume more carbs. 200 grams per day would definitely be a problem for me
@schoolingdiana90862 жыл бұрын
What kind of carbs, though? They aren’t all the same and they’re needed for brain function. You need complex carbs. A bit of rustic breads (made from ancient grains like spelt, rye, hard winter wheat, semolina wheat-nothing mixed with modern soft wheat), beans, and raw vegetables. No one is saying 200grams of carbs from junk carbs like donuts and other pastries, modern cereals, or soft summer wheat. King Arthur has an amazing hard winter wheat that has 11 grams of protein per serving, whereas the soft summer wheat is only 2 grams of protein. I recommend getting a bread machine, tbh. Your rustic breads won’t have more than 6 basic ingredients (like hard wheat, water, raw honey, sea salt, and yeast-maybe with some lemon or rosemary in it). You’ll need to take the time to read your labels. For example, tomato sauce has sugar in it, while tomato paste does not. I don’t buy pasta sauces, I buy marinara which is what real Italians use. Even Morton table salt has sugar in it. Stick to genuine sea salt, or Himalayan pink salt-which has the same electrolytes as Gatorade. Good luck!
@dailydedication26632 жыл бұрын
@@schoolingdiana9086 since all carbs break down to glucose and I have a energy already stored as belly fat, I find I can’t eat the amount of carbs suggested, even if complex carbs. They break down more slowly but they break down nonetheless and if I am not conscious of overeating them (which for many people is a normal serving) or if I am not training the day I eat them then my blood sugar is excessively elevated higher than it should go and for too long after it should have returned to baseline
@annaraz50162 жыл бұрын

I love this video and thank you for posting it I am 48 and what has always worked for me was a low carb or keto well that’s no longer working so it’s refreshing to hear that 100 g of carbs can still be included in my diet and I can still get results. I’ve been playing around with intermittent fasting and what I’ve discovered is that in doing so it’s difficult for me to get the protein amounts that’s needed for my body and I’ve experienced muscle loss because of this so although I lost weight I lost muscle and at my age I don’t want to lose any more muscle so I think I’m going to download your guide and take a different approach with my nutrition I’m already working out about four days a week I can probably bump it up to maybe five or six I primarily do weight training with a little cardio so thank you once again for sharing this video

Carbs make me gain weight so although I love them I have to keep them really low. Once you're fat adapted it's easy "to get through the day" on one meal a day, and even on a longer fast. You can even work out and not feel hungry once your liver's used to giving you a steady supply of glycogen.

Thank you very much Melissa. Your physique is admirable and your advice sound. The only thing I struggle with is the notion that carbs are a necessary part of the diet of women of our age. It might be for those who don't suffer from metabolic syndrome, but not for everyone. I am 51, peri-menopausal, insulin resistant, recently diagnosed diabetic and seriously overweight over the past 2 decades. I know that carbs don't work for me, not only because they spike insulin, make me hungry, store fat and make it impossible to lose weight, but also because they trigger more even carb cravings. So both physiologically and emotionally I have found that my body responds better to a low carb diet. I avoid all man-made, refined & processed carbs, no wheat/flour/sugar/sweeteners, I focus on non starchy vegetables and low amounts of nuts and seeds, good quality protein and fats, and lots of water with electrolytes. During this initial cutting phase I only allow myself one more carb heavy meal per week, which may contain sweet potato, carrots, peas etc. I stay between 50 & 70g of carbs daily and I have lost 9 kgs in the past 7 weeks. My carb cravings are gone and with intermittent fasting my hunger has also significantly reduced. As for sustainability, once I get closer to my target weight, I will very gradually start including more starchy vegetables and very occasionally rice, but the no wheat/flour/sugar principle is here to stay for good. This is what works for me. You said that avoiding carbs slows down metabolism - I would be grateful if you could provide clinical studies which demonstrate this. Thank you in advance.

Speaking to all us 80s girls! So many of us were anorexic or bulimic, or borderline on those. Our metabolism is WRECKED from that. We all need digestive enzymes because our natural ones? A lot of those died off during our stupid eating habits we had back them. That means too much of your vitamin supplements are getting flushed down the toilet instead of absorbed. I’m currently looking for a good digestive enzyme. Do you recommend one, Melissa?

I work out to strengthen my bones and for overall health but I do want to get rid of the last bit of belly fat I have my midsection is my problem area but I also want to find a balance between getting in the shape that I want and strengthening my bones, how do we do that? Even for women who are 40 and older and don't have osteoporosis it's still something that we need to start thinking about because they say that menopause makes the body lose bone which is so terrifying and unfair ☹️

I am 46 and want to improve my overall health. At my last check up in Jan my cholesterol was at 214, and then I discovered a cyst in my right breast and I also had one that popped up on my wrist. I do not go to a gym, currently. My job is a physically strenuous job where I work outdoors all year long. I am always in a calorie deficit but not on purpose. I have lost weight and body fat, but not at the rate I would want. I realized that I am not eating enough protein. Food is rather expensive here in the states. I go to the supermarket 1x every 2 weeks, and I will typically buy Turkey Burgers & 1 Rotisserie Chicken. Most mornings I will have 2 rice cakes with Guacamole & tomatoes & eat dinner around 6 - 7pm and drink loads of water. I have lost 20 pounds but I guess the slow rate of weight lost has discouraged me a bit. I track my macros with my fitbit app and I take in mostly carbs (with salads, rice cakes, veggies etc). I know what I should do from watching your videos & doing research... guess I am just feel stagnate at the moment.

Melissa, your advice is always good. I follow most everything you talk about doing and am getting great results. I have a ? tho, I find that I'm not always hungry enough to finish out my 1700 calories I have set for myself. Sometimes I am hungrier and I will eat over that, always protein rich foods. My question is, should I make myself eat even if I don't feel hungry? Is it detrimental to not eat enough calories (maybe not meet my protein macro intake) for a day or two even when I'm not hungry? I would always recommend that if you're following a meal guide or you have a target number of calories per day, to make sure you complete the target calorie count daily. You can do it gradually - not necessarily hit 1700 right away on Day 1, but try to build up to it and aim to reach it as you move along.

Melissa, I quit carbs because they make me tired, such as oats and rice....did you find this happening to you? Might need to stick to sweet potatoes and potatoes because since weight traing ( which I really live), I have been craving carbs!

I was wondering what's your take on intermittent fasting the 16 hour fast is that healthy and it's hard to do consistently
@kekeunlimited2 жыл бұрын
As you said I have been eating too few calories. I used several calculators online to figure out my maintenance calories, even with the deficit it's a lot of calories. Since I bumped my calories from 900-1000 to 1800 will I gain before I start losing? I never knew not eating enough was harmful.

Would using Stevia for morning coffee over sugar be a good substitute over something like Splenda?
@lemonspica2 жыл бұрын
Yes, please do not use splenda, it's toxic and disrupts dna repair. Stevia is better, or just sugar.

Protein bars aren't ideal because we can get protein from natural healthier foods but what protein bars and/or protein packed snacks would you recommend that are gut friendly for people on the go

Melissa do we have to slowly incorporate more carbs if we’ve eaten keto or low carbs for a long time? If yes can you talk about how to get out of this madness? Been lifting 2 years and no results. Seems like it must be lack of carbs.

@lorraine porteous You can use my fitness pal or carb manager app to adjust your macros (fat, carbs, protein) according to your calories which is based off your weight. Hope this helps.

That app isn’t accurate the package says calories is inside the food and when you type in the app name of food and grams you ate per serving it’s different explain please and thank you sugestionas on what to do
@aren84842 жыл бұрын
You may have to search for a different option of the same food, some of the entries are entered by the app users. Usually I pick the ones that have a green ✅
