Half of the reason I love hand animated films (like Akira, Paprika, or Mamuro Oshii's Ghost in the Shell) is because of the breathtaking artwork and animation. Once it's turned into a live action, you lose the aesthetic and charm that hand drawn animation has.
@sky1arks9956 жыл бұрын
That's why I love the older anime's, especially the movies. But for me it's also because the anime medium is like a bridge between reality and intangible fantasy. You think up this most badass and intriguing story concept. You tell friends, you write a book or draw it out; the imagination is limitless. Converting to an animated medium is merely the next step of creativity, a safe haven to give more flair and personality, and having visuals allows for a bigger audience. But the second you convert into a live action/real life format the original flair of the story is easily lost, it is pitted against other movies for originality, and is shunned for not holding the criteria those movies have (basically it cripples creativity outside the norm) because it just isn't easily compatible, or is straight up jarring to look at. And then social standards come in. (And this is why we will never have a live action Miraculous Ladybug, thank god for that)

It was mediocre at best. Just because it's the new kid on the block, doesn't make it an exception. Battle Angel's dialogue was as bad as the examples in this video. @KuraIthys7 жыл бұрын
Well, it all depends. For whatever reason a lot of anime characters look generically european ethnically, or ARE european ethnically... But understandably, a lot of the characters are Japanese people, in spite of what they look like. A lot of the time this is easy enough to follow, and general facial features aside they still have typical japanese eye and hair colours, or hair which is so outlandish it wouldn't be real anyway, or would involve a huge amount of hair dye. You do get some real oddities sometimes though. Kaori from your lie in april for instance is blatantly European. Blonde, blue eyes, pale skin. Yet the series is set in Japan, and when you see Kaori's parents they don't appear to be European in the slightest (insofar as anime style really conveys race at all), and the series is set in Japan. So... That doesn't really make a huge amount of sense. As for the Major, well, with a cyborg like that appearance could honestly be anything and it would still make sense, but it IS supposed to be a japanese character. now, if you were adapting say Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist or Spice & Wolf using Europeans for that (Germans, if you want to be that specific) would make a lot of sense. Those series are set in European style settings. similarly, Gunslinger girl is outright explicitly set in Italy. So the casting for that should also be fairly obvious, and would indeed involve Europeans/Italians. Similarly, Black Butler is set in Victorian England. In live action the casting for that is going to be Europeans for obvious reasons. And then there's some examples of individuals - negima is set in a Japanese girl's school, but there are several Chinese students in the class, But Negima, the character the series is named after is welsh, and Evangeline AK McDowell... Well, the name is kind of a giveaway, and her appearance (Again, blonde with blue eyes) reinforces that. Asuna is a bit ambiguous. Her red hair (a relatively natural shade of red for anime) and heterochromatic blue and green eyes would again suggest European, as would some elements of the story that become apparent late into the manga. Plus Negima apparently thinking she resembles his older sister. On the other hand Asuna is clearly a Japanese name... For a lot of anime you could very easily make the reasonable argument that casting Europeans is the more accurate choice for many characters. Many other characters should clearly be Japanese though, regardless of what they look like. A handful are ambiguous for one reason or another (Kaori and Asuna for instance)... But the problem here is that Hollywood has a habit of casting Europeans in roles where they shouldn't really be cast. The Major is definitely meant to be Japanese, even if you might just barely be able to get away with arguing her appearance, due to the cybernetic body may be more European. But it IS a stretch, make no mistake. Then again, Japanese anime adaptations tend to have an all Japanese cast even when they shouldn't. (Eg. Attack on Titan.) This is one of those things where it's difficult to know what's appropriate sometimes.

If the only complaint about the ghost in the shell movie is going to be a not so in depth look at philosophical themes then I couldn't care less. They got the visuals right (which is way past rare to have someone do right), it's professionally filmed and edited, the acting doesn't seem cringy, and the action looks good too. Yes the whole philosophical part is good, but even the matrix took 3 movies because they wanted to take their time, and by ghost in the shell they probably just right out don't have the vital time to fit everything well into one movie. If the movie looks good and is made well, and has at least a LITTLE bit of a good story then that's a massive step in the correct direction for us because people will see it and be impressed that it's a live action movie based on an anime.
@JuanMartinez-si5dn7 жыл бұрын
spork Andddd, it didn't work, the problem here is that it became just another scifi flick, and as you said, it's closer, but you know what this movie did besides getting the visuals right? they killed any posible GITS adaptation at least for a few decades, and they can't make the next big plot point cause they mixed two different stories in one, erasing the core of GITS completely
@JKSSubstandard6 жыл бұрын
"they probably just right out don't have the vital time to fit everything well into one movie" this is the biggest cop out of all. The first adaptation of GITS was an animated movie. If they were lazy(or good at their jobs. I mean, they really messed up being not lazy or good), they could have shot for shot remade the original movie with modern CG and Scarlet Johanson and had a better movie. If they wanted to be original with the writing, then they should have kept along the same themes. The franchise has come up with 3 movies and 3 series that all manage to explore variations on the same humanist themes in different ways and with different tones and styles. The true problem with the GITS movie is that hollywood got involved. Big studios have a habit of believing that american audiences wont grasp complex themes and so strip them down for more shooting or punching. The first true adaptation will only come when a studio takes a MCU/disney level leap to trust that audiences will love something for its source themes (marvel) and not for the punching and spectacle (DC).

Here's my thought. Live adaptations shouldn't come from high-speed action thrillers or shounen battle styles, yet. For now, they should focus on slice of life stories, ensuring that they have the basics down when adapting source material, and from there, work up to features that require special effects out the wazoo.
@volbla7 жыл бұрын
I have a hard time coming up with a genre less suitable for hollywood screenplay structure than slice of life.

Slice of Life stuff or much more gritty, grounded, narratives would probably be best. Although, that being said, we DO have popular films about a guy in a robot suit flying around and shooting things with energy beams, so it's not impossible. We just need the right material with the right people to do it so we can prove that it CAN work.

Not really. You'd think that the kind of talent they have in Hollywood every film would be good, but studios panic when they've invested so much money, more people are hired, visions clash and ideas are cut etc. That's what happens to blockbusters and adaptations at least
@2good2bu77 жыл бұрын
Gemnist Not at all. There is a lot of talent in Hollywood, much more then gets the spotlight. And that's the problem. It's so hard to get a studio to take risks, that unless you are already established is a genius, you won't have the creative freedom needed. Especially with a medium as unique as anime, finding someone capable of pulling it off while having enough studio backing to fund it is almost impossible.
@SnowAnayathatweirdgirl7 жыл бұрын
The studios ultimately pussy out and find a safe way. They spend a lot of money and are afraid the themes will be to much so they water it down. The studios are more to blame. They hate taking risks and when they do and fail it just closes them off for more.

I meant that the people making these anime-based movies are bad at the job, not the Hollywood system itself. The director of GITS, for example, created the overdone weirdfest that is Snow White and the Huntsman, and the director of Evolution made the Final Destination franchise.

Source material is decently faithful. Entertaining for sure. As for the actors, Kenshin, Saito, Aoshi, and Sojiro were good. The rest were too cosplay-ish. Sorry if I'm harsh, but Kenshin may be my favorite anime of all time. If you want to look at the movies as stand alones or a series that's not adapted from the anime/manga, then sure it's alright. Compared to other anime movies though, it's far above most of them.

>And I thought Sector 9 was always neutral, a "stand alone complex", A stand alone complex is a trend that feels like there should be a source that started it but there wasn't. That subtitle is focused on the Laughing Man incident. It's not part of the core Ghost in the Shell franchise. And section 9 wasn't neutral. The series showed they weren't. They're basically a cyber focused FBI, a branch of the government that has to play politics on occasion.

I think the issue with adaptations is anime is LONG. You have all the time you need to lay out your plot and the art style lends itself to easy information delivery. A 2 hour film can't add the detail necessary to succeed on that level so what about a tv series adaptation? Something like fate could work if given the time required to develop the setting (and adapt the style).
@charlesmanary29367 жыл бұрын
It's one of the issues that adaptations of games have. You can't compress 30 hours into 2.
@android19willpwn7 жыл бұрын
well, books are usually pretty long too. Not as much, usually, but a lot longer than a movie can do, that's for sure. And even if movie adaptations are rarely as good as a result, there's still a lot of really good ones out there. And anime *usually* has more content you can cut completely with minimal losses than books do. Still tricky though.
@kompuglobalhypermega7 жыл бұрын
Indeed. The same problem was with Bakuman. The anime had three seasons with around twenty episodes each and they still didn't manage to fit all the story from manga. And than you have a live-action movie which tried to fit all the seasons into one movie and fucked it up by cutting out characters and etc.

binge watching the channel, but so many videos are very thoughtful, this one I think hit all the points on the head simply, very thoughtful criticism.

So Gigguk, you excited for the live action JoJo part 4? I have high hopes but can see it failing for SOOOO many different reasons, since I'm not entirely sure JoJo can be adapted very well to live action in the first place. Here's hoping I'm wrong.

It's from Takashi Mike so it's really fucking good or really fucking bad, no medium scale

jojo is maybe not one of the greatest ideas for a live action movie. Part 2 would probably work better. I just imagine how a dude says Star Platinum: The world, while a bad CGI Star platinum appears after him

Yeah, that's the thing that worries me the most, how the Stands will look. If they look like shit, there won't be much to make it good
@mattuiop7 жыл бұрын
it honestly needs to start with part 1, then work its way to part 4. part 3 is gonna need to be split in two
@quadrall14217 жыл бұрын
no it does not need to be split. part 3 can be sumerized as: Jojo and the Jobros travel to Egypt to kill Dio to save Holly. Unless you put in more plot irrelevant stand fights then you can have part 3 as 2 movies.
