I am a 70 year old widow. A hurricane is on its way to Florida and I wanted to know how to flush the toilet without running water. Your explanation was excellent and I am very grateful.
@TomSny352 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I learned something here. I would have poured the water into the tank and then flushed. No need to do that - just pour the water directly into the toilet bowl. Your explanation makes it clear why this works.
@EverydayHomeRepairs2 жыл бұрын
Great, thanks for the feedback.
@matt01989222 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Actually, it may be better to pour it into the tank. That way, when press the flush lever, it will come out the spiraled pores and do a more proper "flush" that has a better chance of properly evacuating all the contents down the drain.
@tyiu56292 жыл бұрын
@@matt0198922 I agree. After Scott poured the bucket of water into the bowl, you can still see Fruit Loops remaining in the bowl. Alternatively, if you refill the tank and then flush, everything should be cleared out. A flush from the tank will be cleaner for a given amount of water because of the physical design of the toilet (the bowl shape, the water outlets, the swirling action etc.).

The water to my building is shut off today, and this is super helpful. I have two bathtubs filled with water in preparation for this, and a large bucket. Thank you for explaining how the toilet works and the purpose of the water in the bottom of the bowl. I did not know that was to protect us from toxic sewer gases. That is very good to know.

Great and very useful info. I did know this however I didn't know the mechanics of it. Makes total sense. I have found that refilling the tank and then flushing as normal works a bit more effectively at removing all the debris rather than dumping it straight into the bowl. Also produces less potential splash.
@alexanderslee Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I don’t understand why all the videos surrounding this topic recommend pouring directly into the toilet bowl rather than the tank. Seems like common sense to avoid splashing waste water everywhere.

Living in houses where when your power goes out, so does your water, I've known this for a long time. When really bad weather is expected, we fill the flush buckets. But your explanation is clear and concise and good for the city folks who don't know fun facts like this. Well done!
@grayhilliard85432 жыл бұрын
Like other commenters, I know this cause ... old. But, I really like the drawing on the side of the toilet as an approach to explain both the trap and the suction effect that causes the flush to continue after the initial water level rises in the bowl.

Thank you so much! I’m a 67 year-old female in the middle of a toilet repair (replacing the fill and flush valves). The 3” nut on the flush valve is stuck, so the tank is off and a 45-minute repair is stretching out (had to run to Home Depot for a bigger pair of channel locks- still can’t get it loose). I’d been trying to flush it by pouring water, and it wasn’t working. After watching your video, I grabbed my bigger bucket! You’re right- you just need a large volume of water! Thanks!

Hi Hannah, I wanted to tell you that Jesus loves you and wants you to repent of your sins so He can take care of you, save you from perdition, and have a relationship with you! You know, we’re in the last days and Christ is coming back very soon... we’re going to go through the book of Revelation in the very near future, and the Lord has imparted in my spirit that *very very soon* (maybe even this very month!) we will see tribulations come upon our world. There is a horrible famine coming, as well as wars, the plagues of Egypt making a comeback, an internal revolution in America, natural disasters, a fake alien disclosure etc... Jesus wants to protect you from these things and take care of you! So repent of your sins and cry out to Him, believe in faith that He is the Son of God, that He died on the cross as a payment for our transgressions, rose on the third day and ascended to the right hand of the Father. start to read the gospels of Matthew/Mark/Luke and John, and build your relationship with Christ by talking to Him everyday! He truly loves you more than I can put in words, and He shed His precious blood so you don’t have to go to hell. Please accept His free gift of life! God bless you Hannah, lots of love to you 🤍🤍🤍 :))))

My mom always told me to flush 5 gallons of HOT water, and my super in SF got mad at me because he said hot water melts the wax gaskets or something… so, I have rarely tried this again. I DID NOT KNOW about the gallons needed being printed on the toilet. This really helps because my water will be off tomorrow and the last time I tried a bucket in this toilet, it was too much water and didn’t help at the same time. I’ll aim for a more precise measure. - I just liked the white board part- extra learning is always fun. Thanks!

I have been aware of this for many years. However, for my family, we would add the water into the tank for 2 reasons ... (1) so the young children would not have to handle a bucket pouring the water and (2) at night, would not have to use brighter light to handle a bucket. Thanks for the video!
@jake97052 жыл бұрын
The water-to-tank method is the way to go. Water just went out? Note with marker on inside of tank where normal water line is. Then use your one flush. Then refill to the marked line using the bucket of water. You can "store" a single flush by constantly filling to that line and leaving the water there for the next person.
@stevenmoomey21152 жыл бұрын
If you take the Lid off your tank, make sure you put it in a safe place, not balanced on the edge of the tub, or counter. The lids are expensive to replace, if broken. We fill a bathtub before a storm, and locked the door when we had small children, as a water source.

Very helpful! I just discovered my main water supply line appears to be very slow-leaking underground near the sidewalk next to the underground meter. This causes me to believe I will lose my water for some unknown period of time during repair. It is good to know that if I stock up on water before it's turned off, I will be able to flush my toilet. Thank you.

You should do a video on how to stop a toilet that is at immediate risk of overflowing. Had this embarrassing situation happen to me once... ripped the lid off the tank INSTANTLY, reached down through the cold tank water, and pushed the "flapper" down by hand to prevent the flow of more water into the bowl. The water line in the bowl halted its horrific rise about an inch below the bowl rim. It would have been a mess all over the nice hotel's bathroom floor if it wasn't for my quick thinking. Unfortunately this hotel bathroom in question had no plunger so that had to be sorted out with an embarrassing call to the front desk 🙄
@chairmanofthebored86846 ай бұрын
All you do is turn the water knob behind the toilet off. Left should be off if your toilet is installed correctly. (Don't feel bad. An old roommate of mine described to me how she had just been frantically trying to use a crappy plunger while the water in the bowl was rising).
