I have been trying the frogstand for a few days but I still can't get it. I recorded myself and my hips don't come up as high as yours, how do I get them higher. sorry if this is a silly question
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great question! The trick is to visualise getting your head through your arms. look at a point closer to directly below your chest. This will encourage your chin to tuck a little - this is a good thing. Where your head goes, your hips will follow. Again, if you don't have the confidence to do this then stick as many pillows around you until you can do it without them =]

This is a great video. I have also heard this called crow pose but I think that is more the yoga name. Please can you do a tutorial and progressions on getting into a handstand from this position? I love your channel bro

Yeah in yoga it has many names. I think in yoga, this pose is more passive though, whereas in calisthenics, this is a very active position as we are looking to build strength here. And good shout! The frog to handstand is definitely going to be a part of my handstand progress diary

That pillow gets so much abuse in my house haha! I use as a yoga blocks substitute too haha! My girlfriend was having some issues with two legs off too. What I ended up doing was spotting her, if you can comfortably hold one leg, chances are you can do two legs with a little bit of support - I mean, I have seen your handstands - you are definitely strong af haha! To spot her, I literally just held her hips and guided them so that they were almost stacked above her shoulders, but I imagine a wall could have done a similar job. p.s. Rui, your handstands are ridiculously awesome so I know most of what I just said is preaching to the choir!

Andrew, what are your best tips to getting used to the sensation of feeling the legs on the back of the arms? It’s a weird sensation? I guess with practice it became more comfortable for you?
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The answer merits a video (which I'll do soon), but the quick answer is that if you are experiencing pain, record yourself to absolutely make sure that your hips directly over your hands, and the second thing is to build up your vertical pushing strength (dips, pike push ups etc.) This will ensure that more of your weight can be managed on your hands and not your knees =]

Hey Andrew, I've done some frogstands, and I was wondering how to put my knee against the tricep like you did. Because from the front, my knees are not in line with my elbow and it was the inner portion of my knee that rest on the elbow. So how can I put my kneecaps at the top of the tricep, not my inner knee? Great Vid BTW
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment, Maurice =] Great question - and it is actually something that is harder than it looks! issues with knee position in the frogstand are usually due to hamstring flexibility. if you can't tuck your knees in close, and het the hips high, you will struggle to rest the knees on the arms. so some quick questions: how is your frogstand? are your hips high? How is your pike? can you touch your feet with straight legs? let me know the answers to these and that may give me a good clue =] Hope you're all good, Maurice =]

Hey andrew. Had a couple questions. Love your channel so far. So I'm a newbie calisthenics/weightlifting athlete and I was wondering: 1. If you do weight lifting, how do you program your calisthenics skills with your sessions? I want to progress well in both so I was wondering if you did it and how 2. This video was a huge breakthrough for me for the frog stand. However, I feel two things that I'm inclined to think are wrong. First, my back rounds a lot more than yours does in the video. Is that wrong and if so what can I do to fix it? Second, my knees keep drifting lower to my elbows and although I feel stable, that doesn't seem right. In addition, is it fine my knees lay on the outer portion of my arm to avoid hurting my triceps? Thank you so much!
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 2 жыл бұрын
realy great questions, and ones that I intend to talk about in greater detail on this channel, but a short answer for your questions: 1. I do lift weights, but I do my calisthenics lift first then do 1 or 2 weighted exercises towards the end of my sessions 2. back rounding in teh frogstand isn't too much of an issue in my opinion. It may just indicate that your torso is long in relation to your limbs. As for your knees hurting your arms, try watching this, as it may be a strength issue: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5jFqXepe9Nmmtk

I tried this several times and this is very difficult, its very painful on my triceps with my knees not even fully resting on it. What i have observed with your form though is that your flexible enough to be able to raise your hips and bend it closer to your body so i think that should be the goal first, to be able to stretch your upper body as close to your legs as possible
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
Really good shout, Rico and an accurate critical evaluation. Pike flexibility does play a part in the frog stand and having the ability to raise the hips high and tuck the legs in, means that simply by virtue of the hip angle, less weight is placed on the back of the arms. I agree, work on your flexibility, but work on your pushing strength too (wiyth pike push ups, or the z-press for example). Hope this helps, mate!!! 👊🏿

I'm loving the content and I just subscribed! I have a question. How many reps of 10 second holds per set do you believe is needed to move on to the standard frog stand? I've officially decided to regress to the first progression of a frog stand hold since I just tried the standard one after a while of not practicing it and almost busted my neck 😂 Well, to be honest I could never break more than 5 seconds anyway and could never figure out the form, so I guess my progress was about the same.
@terryabracey237
@terryabracey237 Жыл бұрын
Also not sure if this is needed to know but I can do 8 pike pushups, can hold a semi chest to wall handstand (still trying to gain confidence and strength for full) for 25 - 30+ seconds, and I just learned how to do a back to wall handstand earlier today.
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
Great question, Terry! First of all welcome to the channel! Let me try and break this down! For the frogstand progressions, I would hold them for about 5 reps with at least 2 mins in between before moving on to the next progression. I applaud you taking a step back to the first frog stand progression as you will likely find that that will set you up better for long term success, especially as you clearly have decent overhead pressing strength judging by the volume of pike push ups you can do (many struggle to hit 5). The confidence will come, trust me 👊🏿 p.s. congrats you your back to wall! that is a solid WIN!!!!

@@CaliToTheCrowd Thank you Andrew for the advice! My knees don't want to come off my ellbows. What should I do to fix this? If I lean more forward, the visual line isn't straight anymore and I fall on my head lol, only then my knees naturally come off and I'm in a headstand.
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Ай бұрын
A really great question. This is a question of strength. If you're easily balancing the frog stand for north of 30 seconds, and your line is straight, then you'll need to work on deep pike push ups to get strength enough in the shoulders to get the legs off. May thing this is about the core and legs, but it is the shoulders that we'll need to make insanely strong. If you want, feel free to DM me on instagram with a video of your frog stand and I'll do a form review 💪🏿

hmmm... are your hips high in the frogstand when you do it? if so, it may be hip position. If your hips are too tucked in (posterior pelvic tilt) or your hamstrings are too tight, you will get an arch in your back. The best way to fix this would be to improve your pike. Strangely I got the frogstand straight away, but this is mainly because I didn't have the fear of falling flat on my face. If you are struggling with it two things you can do are: - slow rep pike push ups get used to pushing in that position, and building strength there. If you are strong in a position you're less likely to fear it - get a pillow (for reasons mentioned in the vid) =]

@CaliToTheCrowd

It's about building applicable strength =] Try and get yourself to being able to do 10 controlled pike push ups and you'll find that you can start to push down hard enough that you can take one knee off! This video breaks this down : kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqXJdIV5eM9-i9U keep going for it - you'll get there =]

My knees rub my tricep area and hurts when trying to do the frogstand. I tried another variation where your knees are tucked outside of your elbows. Is there a difference between the two?
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 2 жыл бұрын
Not really to be honest. In the long run, the reliance on needing your knees to rest on anything will be redundant. If you want more support, I am doing a review of people's frog stand videos in an upcoming youtube video, so send me a recording of your frog stand on instagram if you want 👊🏾

I can currently do the frog stand with my knees next to my elbows. When I try it this way, even if both my knees and elbows are parallel, there is still and immense pressure/pain, like my knee is digging into my arm. How do I get around this

At least you tried!!! It takes some getting used to, but the only way to get past the pain is to get stronger at overhead pushing! I have a video detailing how here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5jFqXepe9Nmmtk

Try doing it with a long sleeved shirt and joggers - hopefully the friction from clothes will help with holding the frog stand =]

Yeah that will suck for a while. Keep doing the basic frogstand, but eventually lift one foot off. The key is, you need to be focusing on pushing down with the fingertips, getting the hips, above he hands, and pushing as if you're doing a handstand push up... You obviously won't be able to do a handstand push up - but that is what should be going through your head to prevent you falling forwards! Record yourself if you can too! Reach out if you have any more questions, Davide 👊🏾

@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, so the frogstand at 2:47 is the incorrect way to frogstand. If you feel you need more strength, I would highly recommend spending more time on the basic frogstand first. so spend a lot of time doing the move shown here at 2:02. What this will do is get you used to actively pushing through the shoulders and get the hips nice and tall, which you will need if you ever want to progress from this point =]

@@CaliToTheCrowd big thanks to you bro❤️🙏, i am easily able to do the frog stand float now but I just have some problems with maintaining the form for a long time and also if I do it once and try to do it again after a short amount of time, my arms feel so tired after successfully managing the first one. Nonetheless I managed to improve and I will keep on improving till I reach the handstand, you're a legend!
