A clean nylon (like the stockings kind) is great for a filter. Just one can make plenty for your jars. Water drains easily and even tiny seeds don't get thru. On a side note, I start a jar everyday and always have one ready to eat. I only use a tablespoon of seeds.

I have Alfalfa, Crimson Clover, and Sunflower seeds in the works right now. I use plastic containers that are left over from Sour Cream and other foods, cut a hole in the middle of the top and place some tulle type mesh inside. When I snap the lids on it stays taught and works perfectly for draining.

I'm just getting started and quickly found out less is best. 1/8 cup of seeds per quart size jar is plenty. They grow and grow and grow!!! I got a little overambitious my first outing trying to sprout 1/2 cup in one quart jar, and quickly found myself splitting it to more and more jars, and eventually wound up freezing and then eventually throwing out about half of it. 1/8 cup per quart jar is plenty.

Awesome video, was so excited when I saw this as I have everything here at home right now to do this!! Even the mesh. Have lots of seed left from last year so going to get started on this tonight. Hint for smaller seeds. Since the mesh fits snugly in the jar's ring, I just cut out an extra one for the smaller seeds and placed them both in the ring adjusting them accordingly to make smaler "holes". Works great!!

When I was a kid, back in the 70's we used cheesecloth and rubber bands for the tops. My mom would put them under the sink but I like the idea of putting them on the counter so you can keep an eye on them. I recommend covering them with a dish towel. Someone asked how long you keep rinsing? Until you are ready to eat them. If they start growing too much you can store and stunt their growth by putting in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Just make sure they smell fresh when you eat them. If they start to smell bad in the bag then toss them in the garden or compost.

I have had great success buying "fresh" dried beans for sprouting at Asian grocery stores, Indian stores have wide variety , they are both cheap as you are buying by the pound ! Just check the production date and if its last years harvest they are probably good. If a batch doesn't work you can make chili :) Would imagine this would be true for organic/vegan/natural food type stores. Probably a lot more expensive.

I thought it was perfect. It gives us an idea how much crunch sprouts give to a what they are being served on. I personally can't stand anything that is soggy or non crunchy, so listening to the crunch answered my question about sprout texture. I am aware many people can't handle other people çhew sounds, but eating is a part of life.

Hi Kim, I've seen some controversy on whether sprouts are safe to eat raw because of the possibility of ecoli forming. What are your experiences or knowledge on this? I've enjoyed growing sprouts myself but have been too paranoid to eat them without cooking first.

I know this is an old comment but I thought I reply in case someone else asks. You can buy seeds that are specifically made for sprouting/eating. The seeds should have been tested for ecoli.

Hi Kim! Thank you for this tutorial. Do you rinse off the hulls of your brassica sprouts, or rinse multiple times once they’re actually done? I watched another video where a woman did it 10-12x going from bowl to bowl rinsing the hulls off. That just seems like a huge pain in the butt if it’s unnecessary. I was under the impression they can be loaded with bacteria. Would love your thoughts on this!
