Thank you for your latest post. I was a member of a gardening group until last year when I had a stroke and had to give it up. I'm still at my mosaic group, making my art, just slower now than I was, but I won't give up. Your posts kept me going during my hospital stay and a couple of nurses have been inspired by you to start their own growing. Thank and love you both xx

We live in 10a and gave watermelons our first try this year. they have been doing great but I was heartbroken to go out and find one of four had split. Rain has been off and on, and they are a week or 2 from being perfect, but the chickens didn't mind the early treat. I came back to rewatch this series and might try to squeeze in some cantaloupe yet this summer. Thanks for all you both do and for being such a strong light!

Always nice to watch you guys. I love how you share your faith and love for each other and gardening. :o) Ever thought of adding a layer of wood chips on top like the Back to Eden method? It made a huge difference with my terrible dirt here in AZ; it is now soil. :o) You cannot till wood chips in though, but the no-till method helps build the soil. God bless!

@Hollis and Nancys Homestead - With that lunarscape you have for soil, and to save the work of creating berms by hand and of lugging in the bags of composted cow manure, I would think you would use continuous hills for the melons, instead of individual mounds. You could drive in loads of manure, some wood chips, other compost, and biochar, dropping them in a solid line, till those in as a solid line, then use the tiller between rows to create the berms. Burying drip line in the berm valley or near the mound ridge would also be good and save on problems with plant pathogens later. Just pop in the seedlings every 2 or 3 feet on top of the elongated mounds, and use liquid fertilizer, to get a bumper crop with minimal labor. Also you would end up with ready-made rows of healthy soil for a different crop to plant in that area for the next 3 years, again to suppress plant pathogens.

One thought is that the overhead sprinklers might be contributing to the fungus, might try drip or furrow watering! Thanks
@suzannefronzaglio24273 жыл бұрын
My zucchini patch last year started getting mildew on the leaves towards summer's end, and I believe that the overhead watering did it. I too plan to water the zucchini from below the leaves, when I plant it this year.
@HollisNancysHomestead3 жыл бұрын
I only water once per week early in the morning allowing all the moisture to evaporate during the day. The mildew I experienced was from over a week of rain and 3 weeks of unseasonably cool and overcast conditions. Drip irrigation in Florida sandy soil is not enough water for my garden
@HollisNancysHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Mildew on your Zucchini towards the end of the summer is pretty much the norm. Everyone experiences that. I figure if squash, cucumbers, watermelon, etc makes it to summers end it is a great success
