How to Hit a 6 Iron Only - Course Management 101 at Horizon Hills

I tried to break 80 using only two clubs - a lofty goal that almost came true if it hadn't been for some mental errors. While playing and just having fun with it, I learned more about course management. I love to hit the 6 iron it is my favorite club. This is how to hit a 6 iron only and use a putter to manage a golf course. Most people would be well to do only two clubs.

THINK! COMMIT! HAVE FUN! ROCK ON!
Do you notice a better quality image? I bought an iPhone to provide you playas with a better experience. I love you all. I also love to show how to hit a 6 iron all day.
It's so important to have a course management strategy when you play. It's equally as important to have a playing objective. In this round, mine was to play away from bunkers or I would be screwed. But I forgot that a few times and the results were what you'd expect.
I used one golf club for all shots in this one guys. I chose my 6 irons because it's my favorite and took a putter along because I was having so much fun learning how to putt. The greens at Horizon Hills in Johor Malaysia are some of the truest I have played on in the region.
I hope you learn something from this two club challenge and I hope I get a chance to shoot another one and maybe take a lob wedge or sand wedge with to help out in the tricky spots.
Enjoy and like share, subscribe. Let's continue growing the movement and keeping more playas on the course, more often, having more fun!

definitely agree with this we have about 40 guys play a tournament with only a 7 iron and it's amazing how well we can shoot when you don't worry about what club to hit, it's become my favourite mid iron because of it

Well - 30 mins after watching this I went out to my course armed only with a 7i and played the first 10 holes. I'm off 7 and tend to use up 3-5 of my strokes on the front 9. Well... I hit Bird, Bird (*tweet tweet*), Par, Bog, Par, Bird, Bog, Bog, Bog (3 very long par 4s), Bird for 1 over! Wow!!! It's been years since I did this and you've totally inspired me to do it more often. What a wonderful new perspective on the game. I will give it some deep thought and reimagine my course strategy now. Awesome stuff and thank you great man of coloured hat from the land of the giraffe! Cheers from the land of the kangaroo and idiot politicians - Dave

Dang! Another thing in common! I walk 9 holes at least three times a week here in South Carolina: Winter Summer Spring and Fall. Two times a month, I play the nine with only my 7-iron. I clip my little club brush onto my belt loop, grab my 7-iron and go. It helps me to see the course differently, and to appreciate the benefits of shortened play by keeping the ball safely in bounds. It truly does make you more wary of bunkers too, and makes you finds ways to set up a bump and run chip. Fortunately, I can use my seven out of green-side bunkers: open the face really wide, using an almost vertical swing straight down into the sand. Works pretty well. I also putt with the seven... just for kicks. The funniest part about it is that I have more chip-ins during those rounds than a regular round, and far less double bogeys.

I recently walked a course so to offset the weight of beer I only took 5 clubs, 3h, 6i, PW, 56 sandy and a putter. I noticed when having no indecision on what club to play you can just focus on what you need the club in your hand to do, not what the other club in your bag could have done for you. I swung with confidence and no regret in club choice and played well and enjoyed the heck out of my round.

Our social group play a 3 club game every Christmas, in perfect West Aussie weather. We get about 30 players, from low teen and higher handicaps. Many shoot their handicaps, or nearer than they do with a full bag. I won it one year with a 40 stableford off 21 , playing a 4 hybrid, 9i and putter. I peaked early. Most years my usual is near 100 score, which is the same as a full bag.

This is a great instructional video. If you break this down into the most simplistic ideals of golf, it makes total sense. "I have a club (6 iron), I have 143 to the center of the green....how do I make this work? (Thinks, sees it, commits) Okay, let's do it." Brilliant!
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
Essentially that is what we should be doing. There's less lack of commitment when all you have is a club or two. There's no doubt in the mind thinking about the 7 or the 5 being a better club. More stuff coming to hopefully address more mind game thingies

Good strategy and I've adopted more of what you say, hitting less clubs but with more confidence. Did not get out this weekend but will play on Friday of this week. I always have a plan for every hole, I sometimes get in to trouble with the execute part, or lose focus and waste a shot with a bad chip or send a putt 10 feet past. Hybrid, 7/8/9 iron with two wedges is pretty much what I'm down to, unless the hole is WIDE open then I'll hit driver or three wood. I'm better than I was at the beginning of the year, and you have helped me get there with just THINKING on the course! Keep it up and hard luck with that rake shot! WHADDA RAKE!!!!! 7.5K!!!!!!!!

I used to play every Monday and Tuesday morning with just a 5 iron. Not even a putter. I'd putt with the 5. I usually scored better than with my bag. My normal bag is driver, 5 iron, 9 iron, putter. So I'm a minimalist at heart. I think I'm going to try it with a 6 or a 7. I've been thinking about making a magnetic putter face that would just stick on the iron. That way a couple of balls, one club, and a magnetic putter face. I could really enjoy my walk👍

Great VLOG Matt and fair play to you for taking it on, we have an annual trophy which is 2 clubs plus putter. I took 4-hybrid and 8-iron. I did okay, just struggled out of the bunkers, plus it pissed down and my wet weather gear was in my bigger bag (doh). I struggled witn an 8-iron out of the bunkers. If I did it again, I reckon I'd go 6-iron and gap wedge.

@@GolfSidekick So I tried this with a 7i at the weekend at a par 3 course that I've played several times before. There was so much to love about the round. I didn't hit anything above a 5, and got a new pb for the course at 78, down from 86! What I loved about the round was how every hole was fantastic practice for my short game and putting. Most holes I ended up short, meaning I could experience some pressure chipping and putting, forcing me to think carefully on these shots to keep my score low, yet the approach was always pressure free as I could swing away and know I'd hit it fairly straight and consistent with my best club. Looking forward to trying this at my home course now, and getting my playas involved! Thanks Matt :)

I think you should bring out a golf bag with "your best shot can be your best shot ever" written in massive capital letters. that one statement has helped me so much to never give up on a hole and enjoy golf. so what if your are reloading again for the 3rd time after putting a few oscar bravo. you still have it in you to play your next shot well, forget about the score and then later over a beer you can think of how you actually did well to make a 4 with your 4th ball (even though the medal card would state a 10 )

When I play a round with one club, say the hole is a par 4, all I want to do is keep the ball out of trouble on the drive, hit the second shot so that I have a clear run at the green for my third and get the ball somewhere near the center of the green in three. Ive been intrigued by the idea of doing this for a few years now, but watching you do it and score so well and have fun with the wonky stuff (flop a 6? 97 yard punch over water?) has made me decide 100%. One big question: how did you decide to select a 6? Is it your favorite iron? Did you look at the course and find which iron would add up the best on par 3s? Or did you prioritize a club long enough to give you a chance on the par 5s? Seems like you hit a 6 about 185-190 if im not mistaken

6 iron is based on my favorite club, reach all par 3's with it and most par 4's on the white tees by looking at the distance of most par 4's on the card: usually 350-380 yards, Give it a try. It's so much fun

Next time out I will go with 5W-6i-9i-putter. Here’s hoping to eschew damn bunkers!

No worries with a 9 iron you can get out easily with a 9 my good man. Good luck!

Am I the only person wondering “why the putter, Matt?” You’d be better off with that 6 and a lob/sand wedge. 😀 Amazing run, either way.

And just for the record … that admonition of yours to equally split the 2nd & 3rd shots on a par 5? Strategy gold. Utterly stress free hitting a full 7i onto the green *when*you*just*hit*one*3mins*ago!

Thank you sir, I wish more people would listen to it! Not always to equally split them. Depends on your comfort level. A 5 iron wedge split is fine too if you're confident. But most people I reckon 7,8,9 and wedge is gonna be best.

During walking season here in Southern Arizona (Oct.--Apr.), I carry a Sunday bag with six clubs--and usually score better than I do with my full complement of 14. Kinda depressing, in a way. With your length, Matt, an eight iron and a putter might have worked better. (And, yes, the rake shot was worth the price of admission!) And did we actually hear YOUR voice a couple times during the video?

Sean Coxe Yes sir, one day there may be a video of me actually talking. But for now, I like this format a lot. I love my friends voice. When I get into on course in play strategy I will talk more
