I kind of agree on everything until the wraps and gloves part. "Remember. Safety number one priority"-crazy russian hacker
@AndoMierzwa8 жыл бұрын
I totally understand. I'm not against wraps and gloves, just aware of the pros and cons. I usually wear a thin weight lifting or cross training glove to avoid scrapes and germs. I also personally like feeling the bag. But to each his/her own!
@NeutroniummAlchemist7 жыл бұрын
My opinion is that it is far too easy to throw bad punches with no gloves and not notice it. When you hit the bag wrong with no gloves, you definitely notice right away and can fix it before the next punch and hopefully before you hurt something . And you shouldn't be trying to kill the bag until you are hitting the bag perfectly with consistency . Way too many people I know with wrist injuries from trying to kill the bag with bad form. Not using gloves allows you to build up strength and form naturally. And from a self defense perspective, it's a good idea to get a feel for exactly how hard you can hit things without gloves on and to build that toughness up.
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
That is exactly how I feel! Thank you for the comment!

Hi Candace! Yes, go for it! :) Picking a bag is a personal choice. Depends on your size, where you'll be hanging it, whether you want to kick it, etc. My advice would be to go to a sporting goods store, or a boxing gym, and actually FEEL a few bags. Different bags offer different challenges, but don't stress about it... just find one that makes you happy. You can always add a bag or switch later. Getting started is what's important! The only other tip would be to avoid bags with canvas or rough surfaces so you don't scrape up your knuckles. You don't want to miss training time waiting for bloody knuckles to heal! Let me know how it goes! Happy punching!
@AndoMierzwa7 жыл бұрын
Hi again, Candace! GOOD FOR YOU! So many people TALK while you went out and took action. You're a winner! I would definitely let your body heal up... no point making things worse. Oh... I also got your email, so I'll pick up the conversation over there. Keep punching! :)

I just bought a heavy bag for my apartment and I was happy to find your videos as they're exactly what I wanted to know as a beginner--especially stance and footwork. The bag will hanging in a doorway (I'll have to hoist it up and down between uses), but I think I can come up with some creative ways to move about. Also, the point about not using gloves or wraps, at least in the beginning, so you know what a correct punch feels was great. And thankfully, if I do look like a flaming hippo, nobody will know....

Hi Heather! Sorry I didn't see this comment before! I'm so glad you're getting value out of your bag. Happy hitting to you! :-)

If you've got the space for it, they have some smaller bag hangers available that let you move around the bag more than a doorway does. You can still take the bag down and collapse the stand to save space in a smaller home.

As some one who just wants to go into the gym and ease into hitting the bag without gloves, without having to try so hard to impress others, and with technique of which I had no idea, you have sure made me feel way more comfortable, confident, and knowledgeable in just being calm and patient about it. I always thought I had to go real hard and fast. Hopefully in a few months time I can increase in footwork and combos, which I am poorly lacking. Thanks heaps Ando.

I really like your approach. Then again, I am a martial artist and have always used the bag in an alternative fashion. You seem to be using the bag to teach one how to fight... I like it! I bet you get a lot of flack for your statement about protection... I believe you are absolutely right...and here is proof. As a bouncer many years I have seen many boxers break their hands in conflicts. Even Mike Tyson hurt his hand on Mitch Green's head during their street fight! It is good to know how to protect your hands and to stress accuracy. Hit someone on the forehead and you will see what I mean lol. Your approach will bare fruit in the long run because building good habits slowly, including learning how the body can support a punch at its weakest link (the hand), keeping hands up, and moving, are all fighting skills where unlearning bad habits will take a lot longer than doing things correctly from the get go.

I think this made me more comfortable with what I do. I don't tend to hit it hard till I practicing sequences or rhythm punching or kicking. I normally tend to get right up and tap, weave, position then do all of them together in one while working round the bag. I have really bad vision so the techniques I use for punches and moving and weaving look weird as I need what's like an antenna (my left arm) which is constantly parrying or defending near it rather than punches. Imma skip the details and get to my point one time at the gym (I rarely go I prefer sports as exercise tbh) I was with friends practising these sorts of techniques very up close very touch reliant. This big guy comes over and says I'm going it wrong and starts showing me how to punch a swinging punchbag. Like a boxer. He then tells me to try from a distance both arms up and swings the bag. Couldn't see the bag. I Looked like an idiot. Know any better ways that I can train without looking different or strange. :(
@AndoMierzwa9 жыл бұрын
TheStrongVirus Glad you liked the video! It sounds like the big guy was just trying to help... but if that happens again, tell the guy to try hitting the bag with his eyes closed. Maybe then he'll understand what you're dealing with! :) As for being touch reliant, there's nothing wrong with using your left hand as a measuring stick. That's part of what a jab is for! Side note: I read somewhere that Bruce Lee had impaired vision, which is why Wing Chun was a suitable art for him. Wing Chun is typically taught as a close-range art and is known for being touch reliant to bridge the gap. Might be worth looking into. Bottom line, there's nothing wrong with being different or strange. I do weird drills all the time. Just remember this-- there's a difference between looking weird when you have NO IDEA what you're doing and looking weird when you know EXACTLY what you're doing. Just make sure what you're doing makes sense and matches your goals. Then keep training!

When I first got into MA..we didn't wear gloves for our bag work...this caused the knuckles to callous over time...to the point of almost being desensitized...I see your point about not wearing gloves for beginners who want to practice boxing workouts...but for martial arts .I agree..you should let your hands develope by themselves..almost like going barefoot to make feet hard.

One thing that I have noticed over the years is that everybody has a different way of working a bag no matter how long they have done it. A lot of your advice was very sound. Most of the people leaving comments on your videos don't know a damn thing about fighting (let alone sports), that is why they are trolling you on here. You handle the criticism very well. Don't get discouraged, your videos are good :)

That really means a lot to me. Thank you! You're 100% right... different people have different goals on the bag. Not everyone wants to be a boxer. So, even if someone wants to scream and go nuts, go for it. It just gives me a headache! Thanks again for the comment!

Very mature and sensible tip.Especially about not developing bad habits of hitting stupid punches while keeping straps on,instead one must use his sole knuckles for practice and built strength on it rather then making strength while protecting your hands. :) great video and wise and simple tip.

Some folks just like whomping on the bag, which is fine. But like you, I like feeling the bag and being honest about my fist. If it's a public bag, then the lighter the glove, the better. Thanks for the comment!

Guys, do wear gloves and wraps when hitting a heavy bag. Not wearing gloves is a sure fire way to risk injury if you're just getting into it. If not gloves and wraps, at least gloves. Not saying I know more than this fella, I just think his point is without merit. He's essentially saying not to wear gloves due to potentially hitting the bag too hard which is kind of a silly statment to make.
@AndoMierzwa6 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you want to train. If you want to wear gloves, then absolutely wear gloves! Happy training!
@alZiiHardstylez6 жыл бұрын
@@AndoMierzwa I'm just saying it isn't a wise decision to punch a heavy bag without gloves and/or wraps. Especially for those uninitiated. You happen to be incredibly well trained to which the majority aren't. Conditioning is great and all but for a true beginner to punch a 100 pound bag with no experience with no gloves or wraps is fucking idiotic.
@robertsmith60686 жыл бұрын
alZiiHardstylez It makes sense not to wear gloves and wraps given that no one walks around wearing wraps and gloves. start with a makiwara maybe and eventually learn how to hit without gloves and wraps. You will be much better off if you ever have to use your fists defensively.
@alZiiHardstylez6 жыл бұрын
@@robertsmith6068 If people who haven't used a heavy bag before or perhaps use it very infrequently, not using gloves is a sure fire way of fucking up your wrists. Going in blind with poor technique and lack of knowledge will lead to sprained wrists and bruised bones. End of, there's no other way about it. That's not conditioning. That's fucking up your wrists and ripping your skin. Absolutely daft thing to say on a beginners video. Even for the well trained, not using boxing gloves or even 4oz gloves with wraps and going bare knuckle isn't common. There's so many more valid ways to condition your wrists and hands than going bare knuckle on a heavy bag. Fucking ridiculous. Whatever happened to punching sand in a bucket or knuckle pushups?
@robertsmith60686 жыл бұрын
@@alZiiHardstylez Well, I don't know what happened to punching sand in a bucket or knuckle pushups , I do that and more, which is why I made the post I did. But neither one will teach you actual hitting. No one is saying to go "in blind with poor technique and lack of knowledge". I just don't think it is wise to rely on wraps and bag gloves as opposed to learning how to hit, how much power you can use for specific bare knuckle techniques, angles, which knuckles to use, open hand or closed and and what you can do with bare hands. There is a progression, it starts with bag gloves and ends without them. We can agree to disagree. All the best to you.

Ando Thank YOU for your great advice - I am very new to the boxing not to the point of sparring yet but been exercising hard at the YMCA with the heavy bag and also at home with a door speed bag. As you advise before "WHACKING" the bag I walk with the bag back/forth like you showed keeping distance - also keeping my guard up moving/avoiding left and right and stepping back - my strength is up stomach getting tighter and the boxing isn't out of control whacking carefully planted combos then backing away even hitting left then switching to right stance. My strike now is so scary strong I hit the bag from a dead stance it arcs almost 30 degrees. Thanks to you though I'm boxing safely and learning.

Love this, brilliant video and very helpful. Only thing I would say is to combat the no gloves suggestion, I've been casually boxing in the gym and one awkward land without protection and my right hand was out of use for 2 weeks, this isn't ideal when you need it for work.
