In this video I am upgrading the OEM front suspension by installing the NIX-22 Öhlins Fork Cartridge Kit (FKS 203) on my 2018 Yamaha YZF-R3. These cartridges features compression damping in the left leg and rebound damping in the right leg. These adjustments and the preload are all done via the top caps.
I purchased my kit from Sportbike Track Gear. They offer amazing service and super fast shipping.

Thank you very much. That was really helpful. I changed the fork oil and seals on my two bikes (basic service) but I never installed a cartridge kit and was curious if there is anything special to it. It doesn't look that complicated and gives confidence that I will manage fine.

Happy to hear the video was helpful. You are correct, it’s not very complex as long as you have the proper tools. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. Cheers!

Newton metre (Nm) is a unit of torque, nanometer (nm) is a unit of distance. In any case, really awesome video, well done.

Great video Landry. Thanks much! If my understanding is correct, there is a bottoming cone at the bottom of the fork leg right? What is its purpose?

Hi there - Are you talking about the small spring at the bottom? If so, it's the "top out spring".... These top-out springs allow the suspension to track over the small bumps at the top of the travel. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

Great video and I will be following to install my fks224. But as I am a diy user, I don’t want to spend too much on the specific Ohlins tools which are grease, stopper plate and pull tool. I am going to make my own tool but there are some question that you can help me out to achieve that. 1. What is the thread size of the pull tool is it M8x1.0 or M8x1.25? And how long is it? 2.what is the seal grease you use on oring on top cap. Can you specify the brand and name please. 3 what grease did you use on the thread on top cap can you give me the brand please? 4. Why did you need to use 2 grease. Cannot you use the o-ring grease for both parts( oring and thread) Looking forward for reply and I will be truly grateful.

Hello Ryan - Thanks for watching and for reaching out. Here are the answers to your questions: 1) M8 by 1.25. I purchased my pull tool and stop plate a Kyle Racing (details here: www.shop.kyleusa.com/Stopper-Plate-Pull-Up-Tools-NIX22Tools.htm) - The pull rod that I am using is ~10" long. 2) I am using the Race Tech Seal Grease 3) I used the Maxima Racing Oil Waterproof Grease 4) I've used waterproof grease in the past with no issues for the o-ring. However, I decided that if I was going to spend that much money on Ohlins front forks that it would be a good investment to get some o-ring grease that I can re-use for other applications as well. FYI - I posted a picture of both the oil and grease here: landry555.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/grease-and-oil-768x1024.jpeg Let me know if you have more questions. Cheers, /Marco

Nice demo for installating the Ohlins cartridge. I will be doing for my ninja400. But there are some parts I confuse. 1.For the video time 19:15 why the screw need to be screwing all the way down as instruction does not mention that. Is Ohlins top cap need to be tightened all the way down? or the position the come out of the box? 2. There is some red grease already on the thread of the rod, where the connecting rod sit on( 19:12). . Do I need to wipe/ clean it before I put the top cap on? Hope you can help me out as I am doing budget installation for my bike and learn some exp from my bike Thank you

Hello, thanks for reaching out! It's hard to see in the video, but I threaded the nut all the way down on the rod, then, once your top cap is fully threaded, you bring the nut back up underneath the top cap to secure it in place (you can see that step at 20:47). I am basically securing the top cap by pushing it down and bringing the nut up against it to lock everything in place. And yes, you can wipe the grease on the rod... Not a big deal if you have a little bit remaining. Good luck and let me know if you have more questions. Cheers, /Marco

Hey Mark, you talking about the clip-on? Or the steering damper mount on top of the top triple tree? I am trying to figure out which part you are looking at. 🤨

Very useful information but just one criticism. It's Newton metres not nano metres :)

Curious as to why you chose the 22 mm inserts and not 30 mm?
@landry555
@landry555 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Simply because that was the recommendation from Öhlins.... And to be honest, I was under the impression that the diameter of the NIX30 wouldn't work with the externals of the R3, so I didn't even researched other options.

@@landry555 Thanks, I don't know either, I have a Duke 390 w/ Andreani 20 mm inserts, it was the only option when I did it, just thinking about going to the 30 mm as the 22 mm wouldn't seem be much different.

@@jacksdad7933 Bigger doesn’t always mean better.Ducati 848 guys prefer the 25mm over the new 30mm..That’s why they’re more expensive in the used market.
