I had an HVAC guy.....actually, lets just call him a guy off the street. Guy came to a rental and told my tenant that she needed a whole new HVAC system...told her to tell me that it could come out of the rent. She was fairly young and I explained that she needs to watch out for people like this in life......Oh and a $50 dollar thermostat fixed the system. Still working about ten years later.

Good video. Please add that the wire itself could be bad. You mentioned the wiring could be wrong, as in wrong colors to wrong terminals, but a bad 24vac line would cause the same issues. Doing this same test at the back of the thermostat would eliminate the wire being bad, and the thermostat.

There is only so much a homeowner can fix on their own. I believe we will always be needed. Plus there are plenty of homeowners who have no desire to fix their own stuff, they would rather just pay someone to do it. There are big companies that are starting to make how-to videos of their own to promote their parts store (RepairClinic for example). I am a minnow compared to that whale. Media is changing the way things work. I am just trying to adapt to the changing times.

So how do you check at the pc board if there is a call for heat? Set your meter to volts AC. Put 1 meter lead on the W1 terminal. Put other meter lead on the R terminal. If your meter reads 24 to 27 or so volts, the thermostat does not have a call for heat. If your meter reads 0 volts, then the thermostat has a call for heat. Is this correct? If not, please correct my error(s). Thanks in advance.
@WordofAdviceTV

What you said is correct. Although when I check voltages at the control board, I prefer to just check W to C. When there is a call for heat, there will be around 27 volts. No call for heat, 0v.

It could help you to determine bad wiring by doing it at the thermostat. If it doesn't work there but does at the air handler then it could be bad wiring. It could also be a stuck float in a condensation pump so don't forget to check that as well.

@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 5 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to check that is to just pull the thermostat off the wall. If your furnace runs even with the thermostat off it's base, then it's a bad control board. If it turns off, then the thermostat is bad. But when you say the furnace continues to run, is it just the blower motor running or are the burners on as well? Maybe your thermostat fan setting is just set to ON instead of AUTO

Is there a way to let the furnace control blower control instead of the thermostat? When my honeywell vision pro calls for heat, the blower fan immediately kicks in and blows cold air into the house for 20secs before the ignition cycle starts and slowly warms up. I want the thermostat to leave the fan alone because this cold draft is making us sick.

@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 6 жыл бұрын
Do you have a scale? I would weigh in the factory charge with the unit turned off first. That way you can open up the low and high side on the gauges and let it fill up, wait for a while to let it equalize, and turn it on and add a bit more if needed. If the unit is completely empty, it will likely leak back out pretty quick though. That being said, let me answer your actual question now :) Yeah, you would add it through the suction side and the tank would be upside down since 410a has to be charged in liquid only if you are charging while the unit is running. And yes, a little at a time. The rule of thumb is that you cannot go over 10-15psi from the starting point otherwise you could slug the compressor. Hope that helps!

hi if i add 410a with system off i do not have to turn tank upside down is that correct using scale
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 6 жыл бұрын
I would still flip the tank upside down. R410a is a blended refrigerant which means it is a mix of a few refrigerants. So it should always go in as a liquid. If it goes in as a vapor, then the refrigerant mixture can be unbalanced which could cause problems.

@WordofAdviceTV 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joey! Sorry to hear about your problem. Do you have a multi meter with leads that you can check voltage with? That would help quite a bit. 1. Did you have that error code before you replaced the ignitor? 2. Are you sure you replaced the ignitor with the right replacement? They can vary in the amount voltage they are designed for. 3. Have you double checked and made sure the ignitor and flame sensor are not touching anything? Like the burners. 3. Does your furnace do anything at all when you turn on the heat? Does the inducer motor come on and can you hear the gas valve open for a few seconds? 4. If you have a meter, check if your ignitor is getting voltage by sticking both leads in on the back side of the plug. If your ignitor is getting 120v (usually it's 120v) but it is not glowing, then your ignitor is bad. 5. If you are not getting 120v going to the ignitor, then I would suspect the control board. Hope that helps man! Good luck!

@joeyjavier9010 6 жыл бұрын
@@WordofAdviceTV I checked the voltage of the ignitor and I'm getting only 105 volts then when the gas valve opened the voltage drops down to 25 volts.
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 6 жыл бұрын
Even with 105 volts, the igniter would start to glow. Have you tried checking the resistance/ohms of the new ignitor? It sounds like the new one could be bad. The voltage drop after the gas valve opens is normal operation though. The ignitor turns off after the burners light. If you have a long shaft lighter, you can stick it under the burner face where the ignitor is and when the gas valve opens, it will light the burners "manually". If you need to just heat up the house you can do that temporarily. (do it carefully of course)

Thanks for the excellent video! If you have a minute for a question... the jumper at the control panel successfully turns on the heater, but it takes about an hour after I connect the jumper. If I disconnect the jumper, the heat turns off immediately,. However the fan is on and won't turn off (as long as the general power supply switch is turned on). The temperature setting on the thermostat seems to have no impact on the function, and won't turn anything on or off. Is it likely a bad thermostat, or maybe control panel?

Nice video. I have 24v between red and yellow/common/fan(black) at the thermostat, when I jump them though, nothing happens? touch red and Black together and the fan should come on but it doesn't? Been trying to install an amazon thermostat on my heat pump with heat strip(no gas) When I set it up I can get the heat to come on but when I set AC and lower the temp the outside unit comes on for about 5-20 seconds, sounds like it is on low speed for the compressor fan, then it just turns off. it worked fine prior to this with the old non programmable thermostat. took a picture of the wires before removing them from the old just in case it was wired different but all looks good as far as that goes. In my mind, If I am getting voltage on the wires, then, when jumped, the fan should turn on. I replaced all three capacitors on the condenser unit outside, replaced the capacitor on the furnace and replaced the control board. it is an older (2004) Ruud furnace and compressor. Any ideas?

If I put a jumper wire from R to W, on the furnace board, would the furnace run nonstop (assuming furnace is ok)? Will furnace overheat? Also, if I have a battery operated digital 24 volt/Millivolt thermostat in my hand (not wired into a furnace) can I test the R/W wires with meter? If so, how? (If I set tstat to Heat, and set desired temp to 75 degrees, when tstat says it is 73 - to call for heat, and fan on Auto - do I test for continuity from R to W,? Or do I set meter to look for Volts? And, if volts, would I test for AC, DC, or DC millivolts on the meter?) Also, can I take the questionable tstat that is in my hand (not on the wall) to test it on the furnace board (sort of like a jumper wire), and set tstat to call for heat, and use wires from R on tstat, to R on furnace board, and wire from W on tsat to W on furnace board - to test to see if the tstat is working?

Only your outside fan should be running and not your furnace fan. When the thermostat calls for cooling. It will actually energize the wires R,G,Y.

If you have a bad thermostat, and it's late at night and the stores are all closed - can you left the jumper wire from Rh to W, overnight - because the high limit will get tripped whenever the furnace temp goes above the limit switches temp setting, and the limit will control the furnace cycling off and on through the night.

If you jump it at the furnace and nothing happens could it be the board or blower?
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 10 ай бұрын
If you have a meter, I would first check if you have power between R and C. Also make sure that the door switch is closed. Should be around 27v. If you have power there and you jump the furnace yet nothing starts, then it is either a bad control board or one of the safety switches are tripped. (If its a safety, the board should be blinking some error code.)

@@WordofAdviceTV R and C or R and G? Also if “fan” mode on is applied at the thermostat shouldn’t the fan work anyways or would the limit switch cause them not to work. I checked them all the one that has a switch was not tripped and I checked for continuity and all were good is that the way u check them?
@juancervantes8932
@juancervantes8932 10 ай бұрын
R to all other checked out 27v except “G” when I take of the wire and check “G” by itself without wire it does have 27v at the thermostat all terminals. Check out 27v I check the limit swithches and they are good according to continuity test….back to square one
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 10 ай бұрын
@@juancervantes8932 R to C. So the control board is not blinking any error codes? Yes, you can check most of the safety switches with continuity. But the pressure switch is actually a normally open switch. If it has continuity that means its stuck in a closed position and that would prevent the furnace from starting. If thats the case, watch my pressure switch videos for more on that. Now if all the switches seem to be okay and there's no LED error code blinking when thermostat is set to heat.. I would jumper R to W at the control board and if nothing starts, its likely that the control board is bad.

Hi, Situation: the outside AC unit does not run. I pressed the center of contactor. The AC worked fine with fan running Replaced: capacitor, contactor and batteries ( same results as without replacement) Checked: the voltage on the unit. There was no 24 volts. I checked R/C inside furnace. No 24 volts there to Please help. Thanks a lot.

I have something very odd happening. My Honeywell (battery powered) has C, R, W, G and Y. When Honeywell turns on A/C it seems to engage Y and G, and compressor kicks in. But if I try to achieve the same using hot wiring, I cannot get the compressor to engage. Trying to solve this first, because I am trying to switch thermostats and it isn’t turning on A/C, and I figure if I can’t even hotwire it, I should solve that first. But the Honeywell works!! It’s driving me nuts. Any tips are appreciated!

Neither works for me the thermostat turns on the blower fan but doesn't turn on the AC I jumped the Y and R but it still don't turn on but when I push in the contactor it turns on and I don't think it's a circuit board cuz I pulled out the batteries from the thermostat and it's still stays on cuz it's connected to the common so why doesn't the cool go on and engage??

I’ve been watching all of your videos trying to figure out my HVAC problem. I tried using a jumper from R to W to get my heat to run and it won’t turn on. Actually, the jumper didn’t turn on anything. Not the fan, not the AC and not the heat. When I used the meter I have 24 volts when I connect R-G, R-Y but nothing for R-W. Is my control board bad?

You have 0 volts at RW because the tstat is working and there’s a call for heat. Your problem is elsewhere.

Your first comment about testing fan at furnace means you thermostat is bad... could also be your wiring and not the stat. I get calls on many rentals where the owner ran a wire in a very bad way. Furnace quits but isn't the thermostat. Is your hot water relief valve piped to within 6 inches of floor?

it's not the voltage that kills, it's the Amps. Takes as little as 1/2 of an Amp across your heart to kill you. like if you have one hand on the grounded sheet metal and you touch a live wire with the other hand. Consider this, a static shock like taking a sweater off is probably around 2,000 volts, fortunately only in the pico Amp range. so half a volt at 1 amp could be potentially lethal. Good video

Why would the fan come on if you only jumped the red (power) wire and the yellow (compressor) wire and you didn't also jump the red (power) wire to the green (fan) wire?? It would seem to me that in your example, your outside AC compressor would come on, but your inside fan motor would not come on because it was not jumped.
