Thanks Jenny for all your helpful tips. I know I need to give my super bells hanging basket a trim. I just fertilized it a few days ago so I’m going to wait a week, trim it and fertilize it again. 🥰

This could not have been more timely!! I have a hanging basket petunia that was glorious, but is looking very sad now. I was going to pitch it and replant the basket. I’ll give it a good trim, feed as you suggest, and wait for it to rebound. Thank you!

I have a hanging basket of mixed plants In 90 degree weather, it started to get a little distressed. I went on line and found out about feeding tea, for extra minerals. So I brewed 4 tea bags of regular tea and let the tea cool down to the temperature outside. I then watered the flowers with the tea and, because it was so hot outside, decided to cover the basket roots with very fresh-cut grass clippings, something I also had read about online. I also trimmed any dead branches, floerrs etc. Within the hour, the basket went from wilted flowers to a perked-up basket with extra flowers and firm stems. A little TLC helped, and I must state that individual stems were shook a bit, to remove the dead buds, in addition the cuttings. I found out that good flowers are not too fragile, but must still be handled with some care. After the sun has set, I will put the tea bags into the basket, to provides bit more mineral leaching, and let them stay there overnight. I don’t know if I should break them up but they absolutely have to be made from paper, not plastics. Just a tip. Seems to work so far…organically.

Jenny my PW supertunias are not taking off in the ground so well this year. Zone 6....full sun, weekly fertilizer. I have a pruning Q...I have several Popcorn Drift Roses & when blooms are spent they look ugly...is it ok to trim them like the petunias (hack at them)? I know usually with Roses one has to trim specifically. With Drift & Knockouts that seems more difficult as they branch in bunches.🤷‍♀️TY.
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t cut the roses as severely as I have recommended on the flowering annuals, but you could certainly take off the cluster of blooms once the majority of them are finished blooming. They bloom on new growth so it may encourage new blooms. Also, are you trimming your roses in late Winter? That will help with Spring/Summer blooms.
@lblak59
@lblak59 4 жыл бұрын
Gardening with Creekside this is 2nd yr Drift roses, I didn’t trim and they bloom like crazy but the dead blooms make it look messy...I think it’s because the Popcorn has white blooms. My Knockouts I trim late winter/early Spring in our area. Thanks for answering. I live hundreds of miles away or I’d stop in your nursery.

SO helpful! I was just looking at my leggy superbells in my wheelbarrow wondering if they needed a bit of a haircut. They're not blooming as much as I would like (and every. single. time. I fertilize, I'll be darned if it doesn't rain afterward!!) and think a trim would help. :o)

Thanks for the great tips! I would like to start my shade garden based on some flowers from your shade garden tour. I’m in zone 8a. Do you recommend starting now with the heat or waiting 6 weeks before the first frost to give them cooler weather? Thanks again❤️

I have calibrachoa that overwintered in hanging basket. I've repotted it, fertilized well & trimmed. How hard into the woody stems can I cut them? I just can't throw away plants that are still living & blooming!
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
Calibrachoas can take a hardy trim as well. You can safely take off 1/3-1/2 of the total plant growth, including any spindly branches up top. They are heavy feeders also so make sure you are feeding them every 7-10 days. Hope this helps!

Do you ever trim your hanging baskets or containers from the top center of the plant or just underneath?
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! If they have long, spindly growth from the top then I cut that back as well. Think of it as an all over haircut and not just taking off the ends 😉

I understand you can trim hanging supertunias..how about supertunias that are in pots in the ground. Would a good hair cut work for them..? Also I have bubblegum supertunias in the landscape --do you trim those or let them spread?
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
It’s going to depend on how the plants look as to whether or not you need to trim them. If the plant is nice and thick & full all over then I just continue to water & fertilize them (no haircut). If the center and stems are beginning to get thin & leggy then yes they need to be trimmed back. Their location doesn’t matter per say, it’s how they are growing & looking. Hope that helps!

Jenny, how to you keep birds from making nest in your hanging baskets? I seem to have that problem more this year. You don’t want to hurt the birds, but it is so annoying. Love your videos.
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
I think every gardener battles this problem. For me personally, I try to keep an eye out for any beginnings of a nest in my baskets and if I do spy it then I take out the material. However, once there are eggs in the nest then I leave it alone. I had a mama wren lay her eggs in one of my baskets this Spring and so I had to gently water the plant around the nest. As soon as those babies flew the nest I ripped out the nest. In years past I would place old plastic grocery bags in my hanging baskets if there was a bird determined to build her nest. They tend not to like the looseness and crinkly sound of the plastic (I know it's a bit unsightly for a bit but it seems to work). Hope this helps!

I have a self watering planter box that I cannot get any petunias to grow in. I've replanted at least 3x and they all die. Soil looks really moist. However I have a dracena that is doing great. Last year the planter became water logged and I had to drill holes in it to get it to drain properly. What should I do?
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
Oh no! Unfortunately all self-watering containers are not equal and don’t work as well as others. Do you know who manufactured it? If so you could contact them for support. Otherwise you could just find plants that like to stay really moist, or you could abandon the idea of it being self watering and just use it as a regular container. Hope this helps some!
