Great topic, most of my life my skin type was oily for sure. It was such a constant battle for me. Now my skin is very balanced. Not sure if that is due to age or finally understanding how to properly care for my skin. Of course, that really is due to watching Dr Dray.

Oily camp here! I’m acne prone and am obsessed with the Cerave acne foaming cleanser. This summer I’ve been using it twice a day. In the evenings following a milk cleanser to remove makeup/spf. Really helps preventing striping my skin. Dr. Dray coming with the education per usual, thank you! I definitely make sure to hydrate my skin and most importantly embrace my glow. ❤

You can definitely change skin type through your life changes. I was really oily throughout my teenage years and my twenties. Now I'm in my mid-forties and my skin is so dry that I use a moisturizing essence, a couple of serums, a light hyaluronic or soothing moisturizer like Aveeno oat gel cream, and then I top everything off with a light application of squalane oil and then a thick layer of vanicream or CeraVe cream. When I was younger, I could never imagine that I would have such dry skin, but I truly believe that a good moisturizer is the key to keeping your skin young. Yes, serums help, but ultimately a moisturizer is going to make a huge difference.

all of that is normal and still not a skin "type". I had acne most of my adult life and it's fantastic now that I can slather as much moisturiser on as I like and never get break outs

It is not possible to change our skin type as per your wish, it is assigned to you through genetics.there are other factors that can contribute to your changing skin types like hormones, environment, aging and medications. Skin type is hereditary and cannot be changed with treatments.

Yes, aging and the decline of estrogen contribute to drying skin over time. I've noticed it a lot in my 40's also. Like you, I was super oily and could never imaging slathering on the thick creams I do now!

When I was eating a highly processed/fast food/sugary/diet soda diet, I had acne cysts and very oily skin, even in my early 60's. I switched to a paleo-type diet, and not only did I lose 50 lbs, but my skin has cleared up and normalized. The only time I break out now is if I eat "regular" chocolate, and I get 1 zit within 24 hours.

THANK YOU for the reminder that sunscreen by itself is just not enough. I'm in Southern California, fair-skinned with cool pink under it all and thin dark blonde hair. Oh, and rosacea, the great bane of my existence. I wear a hat all the time, and I prefer a collared, long sleeved shirt year round. I went all year, summer too, in long jeans with closed shoes and socks due to mosquitoes. It's my mantra that being covered is being safe. So, yes, thank you!

Your top's color is amazing! May I ask where you bought it? Your videos are very helpful! I'm a pharmacist in Hungary, and we don't really learn anything about skincare in medical university (other than conditions that need medication like antibiotics, fungee stuff) But the pharmacy is full of dermocosmetics, and I have to recommend and consult people all the time. So I'm learning sooo much from your videos, and I try to pass on the knowledge as much as I can. Though it is a bit hard to translate skincare from english to hungarian... I would be much more comfortable to do it in english 😂 so thank you 😊

But I believe that because of my oily skin if I use moisturizers that have oil or are too thick and greasy I'm convinced that the moisturizer mixes with my own face grease and that causes me to breakout, it happens every single time it's like my own oil gets angry with a thick moisturizer and I end up with pimples 😭 honestly there should be a fifth category "bully skin" because sometimes I feel like my own skin is bullying me 😭😭😭

I started tretinoin about a year ago and I loved the work it was doing to my skin. I’m not sure why (maybe fell for a bit of fear mongering) but I quit my birth control back in February and my skin/hair has been a mess since then. Absolutely destroyed any progress I made with my skin. I feel like I am a walking sponge of oil. I wash my hair in the evenings and by the next morning it’s just as greasy as it was before washing. I just got my BC prescription renewed so hopefully my oiliness will clear up again soon 😅

Great video, Dr. Dray, thank you. I’m old enough to remember all the ads for Helena Rubinstein cosmetics when I was growing up in NY in the ‘50s-60’s. (Her first facial cream featured lanolin as the key ingredient.) She and Elizabeth Arden were lifelong rivals. Reading about how all this started makes me realize how easily women can get sucked in by the high prices and marketing hype of so many of the so-called luxury brands. Thanks for your B.S.-free approach to skin care and for being a voice of reason out there.

I have sensitive combination skin -- very oily T zone and drier cheeks. But I also have eczema, hormonal acne and am very prone to hyperpigmentation. I have to be careful with fragrance and some oils. Retinol has surprisingly helped my skin to even out its sebum production, at least appearance-wise, and reduced my breakout length and severity.

Oily in hot weather, combo in cooler months here. During the oily phase, I wash my face twice a day with either CeraVe or LaRoche Posay for normal to oily skin; in cooler months, I use only water in the morning. Clay masks, but only in the oily areas, are helpful, too, in the summer. I’ve been using SkinCeuticals Phloretin in the morning, which seems helpful, too, and gives me a dose of Vitamin C. The best sunscreens that I’ve found are Asian, especially Isntree gel and Beauty of Joseon, both of which provide a soft matte finish, and are good for mostly year round use. In the hottest months, SkinCeuticals mineral sunscreen keeps the shine at bay. Elta MD Clear works, too, but it’s shiny and and sometimes irritating (I think it’s the niacinimide). Moisturizer comes at night, usually a gel or gel cream formula. It’s a balancing act. And it doesn’t end.

Hi Andrea, I am a fifth year medical student from Chile, and I want to specialize in dermatology. I watch all your videos. I am 22 years old, I have been using tretinoin 0.1% every night for about 1 year, because I have a tendency to acne on my skin but mainly for its anti-aging effect. While I have noticed positive changes in my skin, such as decreased texture, more even tone, and brighter looking skin, I still have quite a few active acne lesions most of the time. They take a short time to fade but since my skin is very fair, they still cause hyperpigmentation. My question is, is it worth switching to a retinoid with a better anti-acne effect, such as adapalene (epiduo as an example), at the risk of losing the evidence-backed anti-aging effects of tretinoin? I hope someday you can read this comment and perhaps address the issue in one of your videos! Thank you very much!

Adapalene is not better than tretinoin for acne. If you are 22 years old, it is not necessary to start tretinoin. Worry about anti aging when you are over 25. And according to her, the best thing you can do for anti aging is wearing sunscreen.

@@keekeejenkins6162 thanks for the correction. Good to know. I didn't get a white cast but when using a moisturizer it's hard to remember to apply as much as I would a sunscreen, 1/4 teaspoon. That just seems like so much moisturizer. So a normal amt didn't leave a cast for me but still stung around my eyes.

Ahh this is so confusing..i have been doing skin care for months,using either nutritional ones, for normal type skin,oioy and sensitive since I easily feel pain, but for some reason i easily sweat on my forehead and on my nose and mostly Under My eyes while the rest is fine so i cant understand if i do have mist skin,normal or oily, and honestly i dont even know anymore if my skin is actually sensitive cause i could be mistaken and it could be My body in general the one being sensitive

I need to know!!! I watched a video by Dr Shereene Idriss about why she doesn’t like hyaluronic acid. She says it’s inflammatory in the skin and can lead to irritation and breakouts. I’ve been having an issue with breakouts that is really abnormal for me and I am using a Hado labo hyaluronic “lotion” (serum) under my moisturizer. I need to know if the science on this is accurate.

Hi Dr.Dray! finally caught you early because I have a question 😅😊 Is it ok to use " QV Skin lotion" as a facial moisturizer, if I'm acne prone ? the formula seems super gentle and the only thing that stops me is petrolatum 😅

I’m in Australia and dermatologist recommended QV and QV Face, have you looked at the QV Face Oil Free Moisturiser? I went to a derm after watching Dr Dray, my derm introduced me to QV and I can’t believe how fabulous and affordable this brand is

petrolatum is the basis of all moisturisers and is the safest and most effective thing you can put on your skin. It is anti inflammatory and the most effective agent for preventing TEWL and promotes healing which is why it is used in hospitals.

Not a fan of retinol cream, it makes me break out it could be something in the cream not retinol itself. Vitamin C works better for me for hormonal acne and smoothing skin.

Have you seen her sensitive skin videos? She probably answers that question in those. There are some folks who do use products with plant extracts in them so it's also individual.

Hi dr dray is it ok to incorporate a new moisturizer like cosrx snail mucin all in one cream while using oral retinoids for acne? I mean what if moisturizer start give me breakouts and i keep thinking that it's purging due to retinoids
@sebumpostmortem
@sebumpostmortem Жыл бұрын
Ask to your derma but it seems a lovely formula to moisturize a skin wich is under oral retinoids. It' s fragrance and essential oil free and full of soothing calming hydrating ingredients. But ask the doc, please🙏🏻, I have no idea about your skin, your dose, your process or your current moisturizer. 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

Can you recommend a noncomedogenic facial moisturizer for acne prone skin? I’m using neutrogena hydro boost extra dry right now but want something more hydrating!
@SueRosalie
@SueRosalie Жыл бұрын
There are no known comedogenic ingredients. Blocked pores are caused by layering of multiple products. Get a basic moisturiser with the shortest ingredient list e.g. QV, Cetaphil etc.

Can a person be a combo of dry and sensitive or oily and sensitive?
@SueRosalie
@SueRosalie Жыл бұрын
as she explained, types don't exist at all, but you may have a genetic tendency toward dryness or oiliness and those things are exacerbated by climate and other factors. And everyone's skin gets drier with age. Everybody has normal/combination skin, there are more sebaceous glands in the t zone than in the rest of the face.

You said products can’t make you oily, I’m jw because I’ve used products before, whether it was just a cleanser, I would notice my pores developing extra oil and I actually have normal dry skin, it was years ago but I remember stopping the cleanser because I would feel tight but my skin would develop a lot of oil. Do you know why that could be? I now use Vanicream products which don’t cause that, but anyone who has or does experience that issue do you have any advice as in why that may be? Maybe it’s too stripping and your skin is trying to over compensate the dryness for oil? Derms advice :) thanks
