Thank good a left handed teacher . I was a 225 ave bowler 20 yrs ago. Then you had to crank it to hook . Throw it over the first arrow it would turn and burn in the pocket. Now the ball does all the work . Throwing cross lane is like learning how to walk after a stroke lol. Thanks my friend for helping under stand .

"Throwing at the corner" -- Thank you - This made some sense to me and I found a whole new way to attack a lane - Growing up in bowling in the 70's we did things in polar opposites to what happens today. Using this idea I managed to shoot my best set in a long while (and I was matched up against the best bowler in the league-so a good night to have a goodnight) - I was able to line up right away - get into the correct ball right away and started with the first 4 . Even after one of the other teams bowlers started chucking urethane down the track I was able to realign myself after 2 flat 10 pins and hit the last 4 as well . A full sweep of points later I was super happy and can't wait to go bowling again -- I will continue to 'throw at the corner' -- Thanks for clarity

Thanks for this. Sometimes you just need to be reminded of the basics or the concepts on why things aren't working out even on a typical house shot. Sometimes it's the house shot that is even more difficult to wrap your mind around vs. sport or pro shot. I got a new Purple Hammer and was really struggling finding the breakpoint and did all sorts of things like move farther in, more right, steeper angles, and nothing really worked and I got into the trap you described. It made me think I bought the wrong ball, but in reality I was just playing the lane wrong. Straighter and to the corners is what I needed to be doing all along.

Good stuff. One house shot is easy button all day, the other is freaking hard, just plain damn.... there's an out of bounds past 5 sometimes 6, puddle in middle to drown in and the great wall of China at the track. Literally 35 pin difference average. But, that said, the harder shot is what I really love as you have to really see whats up and make decisions every night, where as the easy house i can bring 3 balls, axiom physix and spare and havent shot below 225 yet. Crazy differences between the two for real.

Great content as always! 🙏 I “self-Medicated” with testosterone replacement therapy (steroids) starting around 22 years old because I worked off a lot of body fat (from 303-175 in 18 months) and I had a lot of loose skin that I wanted to fill out with muscle. Anyhow so I would always try and muscle it down the lanes and I would have a 188 game almost every night because I would wrap a 10, crank up the muscle and leave a 4/9 then over adjust and leave a 2/8/10 lol. The difference between a 215 and 230 average is exactly what you’re talking about here.

Utter Gold Luke! This is exactly the way I have had the most success playing house shots. Of course I use urethane exclusively, going up the boards from the right and letting the ball tumble smoothly into the pocket. I have urethane ball down options I go to as the lane dries up to keep the same shot going. When will you do one for getting lined up on sport shots?

Excellent as always. The lane chart is nice, BUT nobody at the Lane I bowl at knows what the pattern is. Thursday it HOOKED like crazy. I am going to move left some more next week. Would a 4000 grit and polish help get an Uppercut reduce the early grab? I also tried all the hand positions I can handle.

Yeah but I never pay attention to a lane graph, I was using it as an illustration, I don't know what the pattern is at my league centers either. I figure out what's out there by watching ball reaction. Maybe try 3000 on the Uppercut, 4000 is still pretty "shiny"

@@jerrynejd basically from his first 5 shots he was testing where the friction started and where the oiler part meet the dry downlane aka the corner hes throwing a very slight curve so the inside oil skids the ball to the dry portion at end of the pattern then once the friction makes contact with ball it sends it into the pocket with taking off or skid forever the first step is take your benchmark ball pay outside and find the friction usually playing straight once u know were the oil line is then u know where u need to be at and how to get there. this is all personal cause depending on bowlerspecs and equipment will change how you play the corner.

Luke I wish it were that simple for me. Shiny balls might work in the beginning, but as soon as breakdown occurs (often starting in the first or second game) things can fall to shit quickly. I bowl 4-game sets so keeping the ball in play for longer is a bigger deal than maybe it is for 3-game sets. I HAVE to use sanded solids to get any kind of consistent reaction on the left side. "House patterns"these days are so cliffed that over-under is a major issue, and the only way to fix that is with slower and smoother equipment. This is why I am so in love with the Wild Streaks, Hustle Inks, and why I have had so much success with urethane in recent years. That being said, volume has increased this year so urethane is not working as well. Hopefully the Fast Pitch helps fix that and allows me to stay farther left for longer.

Another silly question: how does the 'corner' correlate to the oil pattern graph? Or is it a 'Baker Box' kind of scenario (e.g. 5 - 8 board around the far range finders) for THS?

If you have a graph, it usually ends up being where the graph says it'll be. This doesn't really work for heavier flatter patterns of course, but it's an easy rule of thumb for a house shot, and on house shot graphs, there's a very defined place where the oil volume drops off.

@@granz58th Kind of depends on where you're standing, if you're starting straighter, aiming at 8-10 is going to be too straight and the ball will hook too early, but if you're deeper on the approach, 8-10 will keep the ball in the oil too long so it won't see any friction until the very end of the pattern and will take longer to stabilize and hook. The corner is really found by just throwing the ball and seeing where it exists based on reaction from where you're standing. The graph can get you into the right general area or give you an idea where it's going to be, but ultimately you have to find where it is based on your ball reaction from where you're standing. This is one of those don't overcomplicate it type of things, so don't pigeonhole yourself too far.

Yeah, my bowling center here in NY has forgotten how to keep those last 3 boards on the lane clean, so it's a typical house shot out to 3, then it's a skating rink. I've taken 3 off a full rack a dozen times it seems and thrown a few gutters because if I miss left and the ball gets to 3, it might as well be a countdown because it's 3, 2, 1 and into the wash. I'm down 40 pins a game in average this season (mostly because of 7 mos of not bowling and I'm not actually left-handed so my timing is garbage right now) and I'm ready to toss my equipment into a river. Or at least change centers, because I hate sport shots on the left side anyways.

What exactly do you mean by "the friction on the side meets the friction at the end of the pattern"? How do you discern which is which and where the "point" is?

So on a house shot, the outside 5ish boards on each side are going to be dry and the ball will hook off them all the way down the lane, so if you play super straight and lay the ball down on the 5 board and it hooks instantly, that's the friction on the side of the lane, because if you move inside and swing the ball a little more, obviously it's going to go longer, so that's the friction or dry area on the outside of the lane rather than the friction at the end of the pattern making the ball hook. You can tell where the end of the pattern is by the distance the ball starts hooking regardless of whether you're hitting the 5 board, 10, 15, etc., if the ball starts hooking at the same distance down the lane, that's the end of the pattern. So you figure out where the ball starts hooking at the end of the pattern and where it starts hooking on the side of the lane, and where those two meet, that's where the point is. So if the ball starts hooking at the end of the tracer boards, and it hooks off the 5 board, the corner or point is where that length meets the 5 board.

If I'm looking a the diagram at ~:45, would the corner essentially be the 1 board and almost 45 ft down the lane? And then as the lanes dry up a bit on the outside, the "side of the lane" will start to shift further inside and so will the corner?

@@mattbrat92 Not quite. Just because there's technically oil on a certain board doesn't mean it's enough oil to stop the ball from hooking. On that particular oil pattern, there's a very very minimal amount of oil on the lane, so the ball will probably hook on the side on the first 7 boards. But you have to throw the ball to figure out how it's going to react, because where a ball hooks and how much it hooks will also depend on the strength of ball you're throwing and what kind of surface you have on it. This is more teaching you how to line up by just watching your ball reaction, the lane graphs are illustrations, but you always have to watch your ball reaction and make adjustments from there.

So if you were to verbalize the steps you'd take to find the corner on a particular lane with a particular ball, would you say: -Throw more towards the center to see where the ball starts to hook in the oiliest part (finding end of the oil pattern) -Throw as far as possible on the outside and see where it starts to hook -Work further and further in until you throw a ball that reaches the end of the oil pattern -Aim for that "corner" ?

Somewhat, generally you get used to about where the friction is on different kinds of shots. The corner on house shots is usually at 5 or 6 board at about 40 feet for example, I just tend to warm up and pay attention to what the ball is doing as I do that, then fine tune from there. It does take some experience, but at the same time, try not to over complicate it or make it too mathematical.

My main house recently changed and is clearly taking advantage of the USBC rule to leave the outside dry. To far out and it rolls out on me, inside and it's going Brooklyn. Change hand position to fix rolling out, it bounces too hard, or I come up behind and it chugs until it can't chug back. Going to try this throwing to the corner thing and see if it opens up my pocket a bit more. Do you ever use 3-pt targeting? Every video I've found does an awful job of explaining how to apply it

Will D Eh, not really. I work on trying to simplify things and this seems to work well. This technique still keeps you focused on watching your ball reaction and hitting marks by and large makes people ignore their ball reaction because they’re too busy watching whether they hit their mark or not. I kinda touched on this in the board box 2 video. The “I hit my mark, why didn’t it strike” crew. I’ve got a handful more on this kind of stuff coming out

Hi. I just want to make sure I understand. So, does this imply that, to find the corner, I would throw straight up the lane starting near the gutter and move right (I”m a lefty) until the ball doesn’t hook too much (eg throw straight down the 5 board, then the 6 board etc until the ball isn’t hooking too much)? Is that the implication? After finding the corner do you then play around with 2 and 1, 1 and 1, etc moves to fine tune the angle at which you hit the corner?

Yeah that’s pretty much it. I’ve found it to work pretty good and a lot of my friends have found the idea to work for them too. Give it a shot and let me know if it works out, might be able to help you fine tune it but it sounds like you get the point. It’s just about simplifying and making it really hard to miss the pocket. From there, if you make reasonably good shots and pick up your single pins, your average should start going up quickly

Not really because it's going to be different for everyone on different conditions and surfaces with different balls, you have to figure the geometry out yourself. This is like a formula, you have to find the variables and plug them in to make it all work.

I find that if my ball gets to board 8 at the range finder I'm hitting the pocket regularly. For several years I've been targeting at the dots for the first ball. For spares I'm often targeting at the arrows or even at the 34 foot distance for many of them. For the ten pin I find targeting at about board 7 or 8 at the range finder works well. Recently I've been using a little crossover for at least my 2nd step in a five step approach and my accuracy has improved, but I don't much like the apparent move of the target when I do it. Should I target farther down the lane than the dots or arrows and move down to the range finder to hit the corner spot you've mentioned? Thanks!

GhastMarketing Scroggz There’s a couple, making sure your thumb socket sits directly above the thumb hole so the thumb can come straight out every time is another important one, but generally I’m not great with that stuff, I’m more of a ball reaction guy. There’s too many tricks and techniques and stuff out there, I don’t like getting into it because it takes your focus away from ball reaction and knocking pins down

My problem isn't finding how to line up. My problem is hitting my target. I look at the third arrow but my arm has other ideas and I hit the 4th arrow. I can throw 4 or 5 shots right on target and then poof... it is gone. Or I just can't hit my target right from the get go. It is the one thing keeping me from putting Belmo in his place (okay, maybe there's some other things, too, but this is the big one).

Don't think I can apply this at our local house in Ottawa, we have basically a reverse block for our house shot which kinda sucks....Edit- (It's not that it completely sucks....It's quite challenging is better said. And it's not a total reverse block...It's very oily outside instead of high friction) BUT I'm very excited to try to apply this in Olathe Thursday nights!!!! This is a gem!

As a fellow lefty, this video is very helpful because I bowl on a house shot that has a lot of over/under. I was wondering if it’s correct for me to try and use my ProMotion (5x5x2) playing 30 to 10 at breakpoint is correct, then usually I will go to my Pitch Black and play 17 to 8 at the breakpoint. Is there something that should be in the middle? (Current arsenal is IQTS, ProMotion, and Pitch Black)

Also, you use marks early to get you online towards your desired breakpoint. I’m saying it’s a pretty easy way to get you lined up and I said nothing about just paying attention to what the ball does at the breakpoint. You missed the entire point of the video

Watch the video again and pay attention to the words, I said to pay attention to everything, your ball reaction throughout the lane, miss room inside, miss room outside, carry, etc. This is basically saying to use the corner of the pattern as a breakpoint target, and get as close to the friction on the side of the lane as you can. It’s a technique to help you get lined up AND to help you pay attention to your ball reaction.
