I'm watching videos of internal governers on these and I can't figureout why it's bad to hook it up this way. I don't really know about all this stuff but I got a friend helping me build a mud mower who knows a good bit and hassling him about trying to hook mine up like this and he just wants to know why not to and have no answers for him. So I guess if you or none of the others I've commented to can help me then ima just do it this way and upload a video showing why or why not to do this

Blew up my 17.5hp Murray with a bungee cord on that governor. I was riding around with a 6 in front pulley swap and like half a can of ether. It also hadn’t run in months and would die if it idled. It had a huge crack in the back of the block. Took it apart and the counterweight was ripped from the piston.

The same thing happened to my brothers 17.5 HP. Except the engine went into complete meltdown after It got stuck at its highest rpm and completely busted apart, pieces and oil were all over the mower😂

Above 4,000 rpm, a flywheel is highly recommended for safety. To damage to the keyways, do not use a steel flywheel key. A heat-treated hardened key would be even a worse thing to use. An soft aluminum (4041 hardness) key works best. To keep a keyway in a cast flywheel from splitting, it's best to use soft aluminum key. The reason for this is if the connecting rod breaks resulting in instant crankshaft lockup, the soft key will prevent damage to the flywheel and crankshaft. The aluminum key will shear in two, allowing the flywheel to slip on the crankshaft, preventing damage to either the flywheel or crankshaft. A steel key will cause a cast iron flywheel to crack or break, or if a flywheel loosens on the crankshaft, it'll wallow out the keyways. But if an aluminum V-belt starter pulley with ignition timing degree marks is installed on the PTO end of the crankshaft, there's really no need to install a flywheel key. The only reason most small engines use a flywheel key is to time the ignition, and not to prevent the flywheel from slipping on the crankshaft.What does a normal lawn mower go in terms of RPM when it's at full throttle normally just mowing a lawn? And what is the safe level of RPMs for a four-stroke lawn mower? 6,000 RPM 8000? From the internet.....Above 4,000 rpm, a steel flywheel is highly recommended for safety.

You’re actually hooked to the governor, holding wide open constantly on a B/S you will find out how crappy their valves are. Ask me how I know. 😉 Try and find a kevlar drive belt, it will last longer and grip better. Great job so far!

Whats wrong with their valves? Do they break at high rpms?

@@LS1sLegoGarage The springs are weak, and the valves will float (the valves won't seat so you lose compression at high RPM). Also, B&S engines use a plastic timing gear for the camshaft, it likes to break when you over-rev the engine.

Hopefully he won't use that pedal to hold it wide open for long periods.. do you see any issues with this setup other than the responsibility of the diver to control the rpms? Others are just saying the engine will blow but I can't figureout if they are concerned about OP not self governing his throttle usage appropriatly; or if they are saying he is literally setting up an inevitable and impending motor failure I'm just tryna hook up a throttle gas pedal for my mower to use for off reading and no one is very clear about how to do that; and when they are.. the commnt section looks like this one

Why can't I hook it up there? Everyone is saying this will ruin your motor but I don't understand and I keep watching vids about internal governers. I just wanna know how to remove the mofo and connect it to my gas pedal lol

FYI If you don't remove the governor componants in the inside of the engine you will destroy your engine when the parts com flying appart from excessive RPM. The governor gears are not designed for max RPM of the engine and will fly appart and lock up your engine. I did this to a 9hp Briggs on a gokart. It ran fine for a couple of lapps and when I ran at full throttle I heard a clanging noise followed by an abrupt stop of the engine. It was Locked up due to the gonernor gear being shreded and jaming into the crank and cam gears.

You hooked your gas pedal to the governor if you don't do a governor delete at high rpm the internals on the governor will sling apart and ruin the engine

Take the engine off, pull the governor out, take the arm off and connect directly to the carb. Then you have truly no governor

He removed the old throttle, but to get rid of the governor you pull the engine apart and take the governor out. He just bypassed it and it will blow the gear up because it is plastic

The only way it will is when it runs out of oil I recommend 15-40 diesel oil that way it has enough lubrication during top end revolutions I repeat don't put no stp or any thing else in ur lawn mowers for raceing purposes it will blow up then only 15-40 oil
