Everything that you do is amazing delicious and healthy! Most things you do are very similar to our local Halal dishes we eat on a daily basis at home, but no one remembers how rich, healing and healthy our traditional foods are by nature! Your reminders are most needed to appreciate our sisters & mothers ❤ every second of our life.

Thank you Mary! You are terrific and I learn so much from this channel! I know it’s not the ‘slow food’ way but what about pressure cooking beans? I live at high altitude, where water boils at a lower temperature. Beans never seem to get done all the way without a pressure cooker. Do you have any thoughts on the healthfulness of that?

Omg! Mary we cook this dish one day a week. Yes in our East Indian culture this is used to clean and heal the gut. Its like giving our stomach a chance to rest from heavy foods. We also eat this everyday for about 2 weeks in the spring time or fasting 9 days for Navaratri in the spring and fall! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mary, did you know that in Victorian times, this dish was brought over to England from India? Of course, we had to meddle with the recipe and fish, (usually smoked haddock), was added, sometimes with hard boiled eggs to garnish. We call it kedgeree and it's really tasty, although not often eaten these days. I used to make it on Christmas Eve or Good Friday, but now I make my version of a fish chowder instead. After watching this though, I think I'll have to resurrect the kedgeree. My mouth is watering. 😊

I just put a lump of yogurt on the side, I like to eat things like this in a pasta bowl.

Mary I looked at the recipe on your website. You used white basmati rice. Could you use brown basmati rice? Or do you think that the flavor will distract from the whole overall profile of this dish? I bought the most delicious whole wheat organic basmati rice during lock down from the Websteraunt store! I just bought it because rice was running low and I did not have a lot. Well then I went on the Internet and everybody was complaining about the brown basmati rice. I’m like oh my gosh does it taste that bad? I found a recipe on the Internet and it was the right one praise God! This correlates with exactly what you’re saying. It was cooked slow long and correctly. It is my favorite rice ever.

@@MarysNest khichadi/ kitchadi/ kitchari are same. I mean it's a Hindi term so when we pronounce the word in English so I guess it's all about phonetics. And we don't eat rice on "Ekadashi" or in simpler sense we don't eat rice on the 11th lunar day of each of the two lunar phases which occur in an vedic calendar month. @MarysNest4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I will be praying for the both of you! Yes, you can certainly use bone broth in place of the water if you think the added protein will help. You might want to check with your doctor and find out if the chemo is hard on the liver and the digestive track. If so, you might want to alternate between water and bone broth to allow his digestive system to rest so that the body is not overloaded with protein. Please keep me posted. Love, Mary

I was so happy to see a new recipe, and then you started listing ingredients. I never buy over half of those things, and there are a couple I don't know if I can buy locally, or at all. Maybe Amazon? But I'm not holding my breath. I think I will stick with oatmeal or rice made into a somewhat soupy mixture with just a little milk and butter. I do mean "little" because too much might take you to the other extreme. Whole grain for me, but that is my preference. I'm not trying to disrespect you, just you obviously have access to things (and money to buy them) that not everyone does. You are still amazing, you still make the world better!
@MarysNest4 жыл бұрын
Hi Catherine, I am so sorry this recipe seemed a bit overwhelming. I understand completely. I found the mung dal at Costoc and it was quite reasonable but you can also substitute yellow split peas - just soak them overnight to make them more digestible before turning them into a porridge. Also - as to the spices, I found those at my local grocery store. They sell ghee also but you do not need to use ghee. You can use butter or any other fat that agrees with you. If you want you can also make your own ghee. It's just clarified butter (butter that has had the milk solids removed). My sweet friend Jackie, has a video on how to make it. You can watch it here if it is something that interests you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3-YdJhulMt1ic0 Thanks so much for being here! It looks delicious Mary. I don’t like Cilantro either. Lol. You either love it or hate it. Thank you Mary for sharing. God bless y’all.

Hi Vera, How true! My friend who is a scientist said that people actually have something in their genetic code that makes cilantro taste like "soap" to them. So yes, you either love it or hate it depending on your genes. Fascinating! Love, Mary

Does Kitchery help with Irritable Bowel Syndrome? That makes up a lot. Can the recipe be made in one or two servings? Or can it be saved in the fridge? Do you eat daily?

I have green mung beans. Are they similar enough to be substituted? Or are they two different things?

What about the arsenic in the rice grown in the United States?

Do you think it would help with ibs? I’m allergic to cumin, would it hurt the recipe if it’s omitted?

I really want to make this. Can split peas be substituted for the mung dahl?
@MarysNest4 жыл бұрын
Hi Annette, Great question! Yes, you can use split peas but soak them overnight to make them more digestible before using them to make the kitchari. But you will be happy to know that I have another video coming out soon where those split peas are going to come in very handy - so stay tuned! ;-) Love, Mary

Thank you Mary! This is right on time! 🙂 In the winter I seem to eat hearty meals but they tend to leave me feeling sort of blaah. I'm glad you mentioned cardamom. I'll definitely be adding that because it's probably my favorite spice. Mary, I'm sorry to say that yt has been dropping in those infomercials. I love you but I'm not doing that.😔 Love and blessings.💜

This sounds yummy. I will try it soon. However could I use buckwheat? I have some and like it. Also can I use some minced onion in place of the ginger and turmeric? I'm allergic to both. And have you thought of trying chives as a garnish? I have some growing still and love them on rice.

Namaste Aunty. Charan Sparsh 🙏🙏, In India we call a respected lady who is our mother's age as Aunty to show our respect. By this we tell her we consider that lady mother like as aunty is basically mother's sister. Charan Sparsh means I am touching your feet, which is a common tradition in India to touch feet of elders as a mark of respect. While we touch feet of elders with our both hands, elders touch our heads with their hands to give us their blessings and to complete the flow of energy. So again, Namaste Aunty. Charan Sparsh.🙏🙏 You are my mother's age, only she is no longer with me. She died some 22 years back when I was a kid. But you give her kind of vibes. 🙏🙏 I watch all your recipes but this is the first time that I am commenting on your channel. There are a few things that I need to tell you about Khichdi as we have been eating it 2 times a day since as long as I remember. And yes its an ayurvedic recipe for gut health. Slight changes to the recipe though. To start with its called Khichdi. Pronounced Khi-Ch-dee. For khichdi we use split green mung dal instead of yellow mung dal. Reason it split green mung has a lot of fiber in it as well as many micro nutrients and minerals which the yellow mung dal lacks. Also yellow mung khichdi is prepared for the sick as sick person's digestion is really slow and yellow mung suits him. So we should always use split green mung for khichdi to keep digestive system healthy. Also, the rice and dal should be pre washed and pre soaked in water for atleast one hour if not more. This will help in 2 ways. 1. They will absorb a lot of water at room temperature, which is very healthy. 2. Beans, pulses and rice have purines and other natural chemicals not good for the body. Soaking them before cooking will release the chemicals beans, pulses and rice will become more healthy for consumption. Also, we shoud not use mustard seeds in the khichdi. I don't know the reason for it, but it is mentioned in many ancient ayurvedic scriptures. Also, pls use little black pepper in khichdi as black pepper will will manifolds increase the absorption of curcumin of turmeric in the body. We should always add ghee on top of the khichdi after it is cooked and also the roasted cumin powder. Coriander powder is not needed as you are anyways using fresh coriander. For ghee, always use ghee having A2 protein which comes from.the Indian cows. Do read about it. I have explained it in detail in my channel as well but it is in hindi so I don't think you will be able to understand it. Also, right now is the best time to have khichdi. Infact Jan 13th, 14th and 15th are the best days to eat khichdi in the whole year as per ayurved. Thanks for sharing your recipes. I love them. Again . Charan Sparsh Aunty 🙏🙏
