Wow, I love it. What gauge are your aluminum strips, between 30 and 22 gauge? And where did you buy them? What I see on hardware store websites is aluminum strips for flooring. Thanks :)

“Aluminum flashing” can work, but it has its own drawbacks. It’s not made in readily used sizes, so you’d have to make your own strips (scoring the metal a few times with a utility knife and bending it to make the cut can warp the material less than cutting with scissors or tin snips would). Then the edges will need deburring and smoothing. Roundabout 400 grid sandpaper will do well enough for that, but it’s an extra step and possibly an extra item. Also, flashing usually comes coated in a light layer of oil, which is fine for roofing, but probably requires removal here. Sometimes (most of the time?) it is also plastic coated, which could be undesirable. If suitable aluminum strips are available, it’s likely not worth the effort, but otherwise, aluminum flashing can be viable. And if it matters, the cost of materials is probably less for flashing (outweighed by the cost of time and a potential ER visit to reattach your thumb, though maybe not so in Canada).

If you go to the home improvement store, Lowe's or Home Depot, you'd search for a non treated aluminum flashing. You can get a minimum of a hundred cutters with one roll. I use a measuring ruler to be exact. I've been using the first cutter I made six years ago and it is till rust free and perfect. Only issue, do not buy treated. You can tell because it is painted Brown. And I contacted an aluminum factory and the flashing is the same product used for soda cans and aluminum foil. Meaning it is good safe. Good luck

The roll of flashing I found is minimum of 8" wide.... Do you score the metal at maybe 24" lengths and then bend back and forth to snap and then do the same thing to cut the 8" down into 8- 1" strips that you then bend and snap?

@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 5 жыл бұрын
Simple and elegant is always better, and that is scotch tape. What would you do... buy expensive soldering equipment just for this, or toxic glue? Tape is just fine for me. You can replace it when it breaks down, it's not toxic. And you and I are not "professionals," sweetie. She is, and if she uses tape, then it's more than okay for us.
@MarySanchez-qk3hp
@MarySanchez-qk3hp 5 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but scotch tape smooths over the two rough ends creating smooth continuity. Soldering would be difficult to achieve that with, and you couldn't wrap those two ends with a glue gun. The o relapsing endsneed to be wrapped to make them disappear, remember? And scotch tape is very thin so it doesn't create a lump, the cutting edge remains the same thickness with tape. Use your brain.

The aluminum she uses is too stiff to bend around a pin. It has to be, so you can press down firmly on it and get clean cookie edges.

12-9-18. I called the local Home Depot. The guy in hardware said the narrowest aluminum flashing roll they sell is 4" wide and really long, and costs more than 12 dollars. So I asked about copper, and the smallest sheet they have is 1 foot x 2 foot. As far as the 4-inch wide aluminum flashing goes, I could get a narrow, straight strip from both edges and waste the aluminum in the center, and frankly, twelve dollars is too pricey for me, more than I'll ever use. And as far as the copper sheet, I suppose I can get narrow strips from two or four sides and discard that center, too. The more cuts I make, the less the chance that the edge will be perfectly straight. So I'd prefer to use the factory-made edges. I don't know where she got such narrow flashing, unless she cut it down herself. Lowe's is probably no different. I could find someone who drinks soda and ask for,their empty cans, but I doubt the strips I would create from a soda can, or a cat food can or a tuna fish can, will be long enough to make a cookie cutter.
