How to Master the Wind - PGA TOUR 2K21 Gameplay Tutorial - Part 1 - Wind Distance Affect using a Systematic Approach and Data. In today's tutorial video, I will teach virtual golfers how each different wind types affect carry distance, using data I have collected from 1000's of shots in different wind conditions. Part 2 of this tutorial series will focus on how to aim to compensate for the wind and is coming soon. Part 3 will combine all the elements, including elevation, lie percentage, and wind distance affect. See below for example calculations and data.

Calculations
1. “Average Percent Multiplier” x Wind Speed (MPH) = wind distance affect in yards
2. If Tailwind or Cross tailwind: Add to carry distance - Carry distance (yards) + wind distance affect = total carry distance
3. If Headwind or Cross headwind: Subtract from carry distance: Carry distance (yards) - wind distance affect = total carry distance

Example calculations:
1. Driver carrying 291 yds, with a 10 MPH Tailwind
o 1st - look for “average percent multiplier” value for driver in Tailwind section above or in video: value is 1.24
o 2nd - Enter it into equation above: 1.24 x 10 MPH = 12.4
o 3rd - Add value to carry distance since it is in the tailwind category. The wind is going to push the ball further therefore increasing its carry distance.
 291 yds + 12.4 = 303.4
o 4th - Now we know that If hit 100% with an 100% lie percentage, the club should carry between 302 and 305 with a high probability of being 303.4
2. Lob Wedge carrying 82 yds, with a 10 MPH Headwind
o 1.06 x 10 MPH = 10.6
o 82 yds - 10.6 = 71.4
o Now we know that If hit 100% with an 100% lie percentage, the club should carry between 70 and 73 with a high probability of being 71.4

Thanks again! Interesting that the full headwind has about twice as strong a damaging effect as a full tailwind has a beneficial effect with all clubs. I've been assuming headwind & tailwind had an equal effect. Now I know why my iron shots to the green in a headwind have been coming up short so much!

You’re welcome! Happy to help! So I hit thousands of shots and collected the data in different wind speeds and averaged the distance and aim affect out for each wind speed categories and club types. Took a lot of time, but I know it has helped a lot of us virtual golfers understand the wind better.

You’re welcome! Glad to help This great community! The wind does not affect the shot differently on different difficulty settings. With that being said, on lower difficulties it already calculates the wind for you so it may seem that it’s not affecting the distance shown. I have been having some technological difficulties of lately which has been affecting my consistency with twitch streams. As I get things situated I will have a more consistent schedule. Thank you! It could be that some of the pro vision options are turned on. If any of the pro vision difficulty settings are on the game already compensates for those elements. It could also be the last difficulty option not being set to carry distance only. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tutorials, they've been very helpful. One of the problems I'm having now is the inconsistency relating to calculating wind effect on shorter shots. For example some distances (40-120 yard shots) the wind may effect my shot or it won't & using the multipliers ends up throwing me off. I'm assuming it might have something to do with loft, but like I said it's not consistent in a way that I can figure out. Do you have any way of knowing what distances ignore wind, or how much loft effects using these multipliers?

Thank you, I am glad they have been helpful! Yes you are right about the loft being a big factor in shots 120 yards and in. Loft is not a huge factor in wind speeds 7-8 yards or less. But in wind speeds above that range I avoid changing the loft due to the unpredictability of the wind when adding loft. I have seen just a little bit of loft add an additional 15 yards in a tail wind. In this cases I usually try to hit percentage shots, which I know are difficulty, but it makes the wind affect easier to judge. One thing I would recommend in a head wind at this range, to actually move the loft and attacking angle up, to deloft the ball. This will in some cases almost negate the wind affect, and you can dial it in. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have anymore questions, I am here to help!

Yeah my wind tutorials are very detailed and in depth. This video was specifically for distance, part 2 is for aiming. But basically if you have a crosswind you will need to aim in the opposite direction the wind meter is pointing toward. So if it is pointing to the left, you need to aim to the right to compensate

The one thing I must've missed in the tutorials, was how to calculate the distance a ball will travel with a cross head wind or a cross tail wind? I have the data sheets for distance calculations for wind and distance multipliers for head wind an tail wind. But I do not remember seeing distamce calculations for cross tail or cross head wind. Can you help me out with a simple example? Thanks!

There is a greater variability in the crosswinds with regards to distance. If you download the excel spreadsheet on my website, you will have all the data for each wind and all wind types already calculated. One of my subscribers, Roda, used my data and made this spreadsheet for us, it is incredible. In this spreadsheet, you will have all the data in one spot, it includes data for ball lie angle, the wind distance affect (in yards) and lastly for the wind aim affect (in clicks/flicks of the stick). @@GamerAbility great thanks! Just so I am reading the sheet correctly, 1-22 is the wind. Are all the stats on the wind direction and wind dostance spread sheets representing yards? IE. A driver with a 16 mph Cross headwind will travel 25.76 less yards and 28 yds in direction,left or right, according to the spreadsheet. I fell like thats I am doing thay wrong. This is the last question I promise haha!

I love the questions and love to help so feel free to ask any questions about the games I play! The wind distance sheet is in yards that is correct. The wind direction sheet is in quick flicks of the aim stick in the opposite direction the wind is blowing, so not exactly one yard. A quick flick of the stick is typically a little less than a yard, but if you use yards instead of flicks of the stick it should still be pretty close with a perfect tempo swing. A fast or slow tempo swing really dampens and changes the wind aim and distance effect. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions, I am here to help!

I have a question though about the wedges you are using............they show up as .....56*pitch 52*gap 58*sand 48*lob.........when I changed mine over to the same wedges as you are using they show as 48pitch 52gap 56sand 58lob. can you offer an explanation for the difference in the degrees ............or dosen't it matter...........John.

There used to be a visual glitch on the wedges where it would display the wrong degree of wedges which is what occurred in the video. This has been fixed now, so your wedge degrees of 48 PW, 52 GW, 56 SW, and 58 LW are still the same clubs as mine. Keep having fun out there on the course! Yes this does work with mouse and keyboard, just requires a quick left or right button press. You can also use the green grid lines, because one flick of the stick is around 1 grid line give or take a few inches.

Do you have a flat course for practicing, where you can set the wind strength and direction?

The best thing to do is to make one in the course designer. All you have to do is flatten the entire plot of land, and create one long hole and you can place multiple objects to sim for at different distances. This will allow you to change the wind and practice in different winds. You can Also create multiple holes at different distances or just place your ball wherever you want it. I wish you could change wind settings in the driving range.

It is possible but you have to convert the metric wind unit to mph, and then find that value in the chart based on the mph unit not the metric unit. But I am not familiar with metric units, so I have never actually tried it.

Yeah it is hard to find a game in online matchmaking at times. You should checkout tgctours.com/ if you are looking for online stroke play tournaments. It is so much fun. There is the beginner league called the Beer league that anyone can join, or you can try to qualify on one of the higher tours through Q-school (on high difficulty settings though). Have fun out there on the virtual course!

I'm using mouse and keyboard. These designations don't seem to be working for me. Especially the wind aim.

Keep in mind that the data was collected with my specific club set, so there is some variance between club sets. It is a little different with mouse and keyboard because you cannot really do a quick flick on the stick. But just quickly tapping left or right is pretty close (experiment with how many keyboard presses is equivalent to my flicks of the stick on a controller, this may take some experimenting). I have tested on mouse/keyboard and the data still works, I actually just played a round again to test since it has been awhile since I have played on mouse and keyboard (I play on controller) and it worked. Keep in mind, the data is based on perfect tempo, 100% power, and perfect swing plane shots and consist of averages across 1000s of shots. So it will not be right on because there is a Higher variability with some wind speeds and especially with shot types. However, it helps you better understand how different wind speeds can affect each club type. Hope this helps!

Can you make a video putting this in practice on an actual course? This info is great but on the course we have elevation to account for as well. I try to add/subtract elevation (usually elevation divided by 3) to find the true distance to the pin. Then take your numbers and see where it will land. Then figure in roll distance. I try and figure it out where I want the ball to land with the roll. Example: 200 yards to pin, uphill 30 feet elevation, 10MPH Tailwind. For me, it's 210 feet to the pin after adding elevation. Tailwind .76 x 10MPH wind is =7.6 yards. So now it's 217.6 to the pin. If I have a 210 yard club that will roll around 7 yards, then I can hit 100% power for 210 yards and it will roll to 217. I would love to see a video putting all of this into practice on a course with Wind/elevation/roll distance.

Keep in mind the one called full hole instruction near the top of the playlist is before I collected all my data. But the ones titles full hole tutorial series episode 1 and 2 are using all my data and will be the most helpful

This game is rubbish I tried hitting in the wind it said 10 mph it was like hitting in a 25mph wind I could not believe this, it's the same when hitting into a 15mph wind it was like hitting into a gale force wind it absolutely stupid this game I prefer the Tiger Wood games you don't get this problem
