Sorry for the late reply. The idea of back rolling is to eliminate roller marks and it helps to even out the finish. I'm not really sure what you mean by shadows but when paint is drying it can look uneven or patchy but when dry it should look fine.

For new plaster board I use an acrylic sealer/undercoat for first coat and two top coats of flat, if you are painting a wet area I would use a low sheen or semi gloss acrylic. For previously painted ceilings generally there is no need to prime or undercoat, just apply two coats of either flat or low sheen.

In general 120 - 180 grit, if the ceiling is acrylic then you don't need to sand too hard, you only need to sand the bad areas hard either to feather out the edges or to remove ruff bits. If the ceiling was painted in a semi gloss or gloss enamel then you would have to give the complete ceilings a really good sand. Sanding is not just about the grit size, its also about how much pressure you apply when sanding.
@Avital44144 жыл бұрын

Brilliant tutorial. I would also add that you need to have adequate lighting especially when painting rooms with no windows like bathrooms or if it's dark and cloudy outside, I always use a portable led light shining upwards onto the ceiling, just helps you pick out any snots or roller edges.

Can I use gardz as a primer? Have torn drywall paper so fixing with gardz sealant. Should I only use the gardz on the torn paper. Then mud over those areas, and then use a different primer before I paint? I need help asap, lol. Or should I apply gardz to entire ceiling and use it as a primer on the drywall before painting without primer? I keep seeing skim coat is needed but u just painted bare drywall, proving skim coat is not needed, correct?
@howtopaintinfo5 жыл бұрын
Doing a search on Gardz seal it is for moisture issues so I wouldn't use it unless it was a moisture issue. If you have used it on the torn areas that's fine but no need to do complete wall. You could use just a plaster board sealer on the torn areas, light sand when dry, mud over it, sand and prime complete wall. Skim coat is not need on drywall. When priming the ceiling, should you cut in first like you would when painting colour on a wall or cut in after rolling the primer on the ceiling. Also do you paint cornices (brush) first before the ceiling or after and if you brush down onto the wall if priming the whole room, will this be enough for the cutting in for the walls or is it better to go back over so you have a wet edge on the walls also. Just talking primer here. Thanks in advance
@howtopaintinfo4 жыл бұрын
With primer it doesn't matter if you cut in first or last, also when you are painting the cornice make sure you brush down far enough so you don't need to go back and cut in the walls later. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

@howtopaintinfo11 ай бұрын
Generally about 18 mm nap. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
@howtopaintinfo12 жыл бұрын
A bathroom ceiling should be painted with a low sheen or semi gloss paint, I have seen passage ceilings outside a bathroom door that have also peeled, due to steam. All you can do now is scrape off all the loose or bubbled paint, fill over any broken edges and sand, then prime or seal the complete ceiling, then top coat with at least a low sheen paint. Flat paint finishes will break down with constant moisture or steam.

Often one of the main things people do wrong is to apply the paint too thin and being thin it dries a lot quicker so try to put a little more paint on and see if that helps. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
@JesusSaves86AB6 жыл бұрын
I would have to add sleeve thickness is an often overlooked equation. I never use less than 25mm sleeves for larger ceilings and go with a 30mm for very large or high ceilings since it holds more paint which helps maintain working time and you don't notice the texture difference as much as on a wall. High hide flat paints are also a godsend for extremely large ceilings.

What type and size nap do you use for a ceiling? How to avoid splatter?
@howtopaintinfo3 жыл бұрын
You can use say 15 to 18 mm nap and splatter can depend on paint thickness and the type of roller sleeve used. I have found that lambs wool sleeve seem to hold the paint without to much splatter. Microfibre rollers are good to for less splatter, hope that helps. Berger ceiling white, solver ceiling white and Dulux professional ceiling white are all good. I do know when it comes to plaster board that the most important part is to make sure you use glue, nails or screws are only there to hold the plaster board in place until the glue dries. So I thought I would check with a mate that has been hanging plaster board longer then I have been painting and his response was “it’s normal practice to screw or nail the edges and double screw the center as long as you glue it correctly”.
@Semaj.182722 жыл бұрын
See how you done the first half and starts the second half so it ok to roll over the end of those edges before it drys ? But when cutting the brush leaves a thick finsish that why you showing how to roll away from the cutting as you explained
@howtopaintinfo2 жыл бұрын
With the cutting in you should blend or feather the edges so this is no thick edge. Yes you need to try to keep a wet edge and that's why there is a method of doing it. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

I would have to agree. I've only seen wall sheets glued though, as a rule I strap my lids with resilient channel on trusses to allow for truss movement, and between floors for sound transfer. If the sheets in this video were glued to joists or wood strapping I was wrong to call you butchers. if anything you've got more effort into that than i'd put in. Screws are fast.
@howtopaintinfo11 жыл бұрын
There are a few possible things you are doing wrong. Firstly you do need to apply enough paint so it stays wet for awhile; I find this is where a lot of people go wrong. Also it will depend on how hot the day is, flat finishes won't show overlap marks like a semi gloss will so you will need to keep a wet edge at all times so it maybe a case of painting the ceiling during the coolest part of the day and keep air flow to a minimum while painting.

@mattcameron23968 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information. Looks like a very logical approach and well explained. When do you sugar soap a pre-painted ceiling as opposed to sanding it? Also, are there any instances in which you would do neither and simply wipe the cobwebs away and start painting? I’ve heard advice ranging from, “Make sure you sand the ceilings or the paint won’t stick”, to “Just buy a good quality primer and start painting”. Would appreciate your thoughts. (New subscriber).
@howtopaintinfo3 жыл бұрын
With ceiling paint in general you can just paint straight over existing, no primer required. If the ceilings have been painted in a gloss enamel then it will need a good sand and a primer wouldn't hurt. Its the paint that was used previously that will determine what process you will need to do. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

first thing you need to do is check where the main light source and entrance is.. you want to roll in the adjacent direction to the common entrance, this helps to eliminate reflections. also dont stop rolling at the edge of a wall or the paint will gather up, you should roll back again and gradually lift off to feather it off.

Not thinking technique. He's going the wrong direction for the dimensions of the ceiling. He wouldn't have to "try and get back to it before it dries" if he was working in the other direction. He could lay it all off as he goes, and he should also lay it all off in the same direction. If you keep those two concepts at the forefront of your ceiling painting you will get a much more even paint job that will also look a lot better in evenness of sheen and make roller marks less noticeable.

I guess I don't leave a straight line end like that,the paint I use dries so frikkin fast, there will be a visible line,I kinda feather /stagger it…seems like you have to maintain 2 wet edges this way...

You sorta do but with a flat paint it should dry out fine.. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe

I note there is not yet any cornice installed. Do you know if it's ok to paint then later install the cornice over the newly painted plasterboard/drywall?

The ceiling in this video is a square set ceiling meaning there is no cornice. You will find square set ceilings in architecturally designed houses as they cost more to do then using a standard cornice. It's best to have the cornice up before you paint as the cornice adhesive will not stick to paint.
