@Unicorn Gaming Yes. The biggest thing that got me initially was: 1. Making sure I didn't dip the roller into the paint too far and 2. Making sure I had a good quality roller as my first one broke almost immediately.

Generally shading is only noticed on darker colours, with light colours I have cut in walls the day before I rolled and there is no colour variation. Dark colours are different and in some cases it's best to cut in one wall and roll it before the cutting in has dried. Unfortunately there are some colours that will show a different shade when its rolled to when its brushed and there is nothing you can do about it except to roll as close to the edges as possible.

I used an additive once about 20 years lol, didn't really think much of it, brought some Floetrol about 2 years ago and its still in my trailer unused. I generally add small amounts of water as the day progresses to keep the paint flowing, work in the shade where possible and work as quick as you can. As for the roller nap, that will depend on the surface, smooth surfaces use a short nap like 14 mm and rough surfaces use longer naps. Lambswool rollers wash out the easiest.

This guy is wright in how he explains to apply a loaded roller on to a wall and leaving gaps between the paint and spread by feathering it out equally. But iv always found that overlapping the surface with a roller doing star movements seems to be a professional finish. than up and down. # ☆.

Great video! Thanks for making that, can't wait to try and apply your technique tomorrow as our DIY efforts are lacking the details like bankrolling and minding the wet edge. Hence we have roller marks and inconsistent finish that is noticeable when looking down the wall. How would you apply this to a tall wall....18'? Thanks again!

Thanks for the quick response. I have painted 2 walls only with two coats of orange water-based paint. Should I had a third coat to rectify the problem? For the 2 unpainted walls (undercoat only), should I cover the acrylique in the corners with an undercoat first, thereby ensuring that the paint absorbs at the same time on both the acrylique and the rest of the wall?

@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 10 жыл бұрын
A pan or roller tray is what I prefer, personally I haven't seen those grids for a bucket but it wouldn't be any use to me anyway. I normally use a 14" roller or a 11" roller, neither will fit inside a bucket. Also I would have thought the height of the bucket would be a little uncomfortable, having to lift the roller up so high each time you needed to load the roller.

When you're laying off, yes it might be easier to roll up then down, saving you lifting the roller off the wall, but the potential problems of this are that two passes over the same spot equates to a heavy roll on that area with more potential for lines. Also there is a chance that your downward pass is not over the exact same piece of wall as the upward pass (you may have deviated slightly). With flat paint, this won't matter. But with any type of sheen in the paint, especially in an area where lighting shows up everything (e.g. in a hallway), you will notice lines created by sheen differences between upward and downward strokes.

All new rollers shed, except for some synthetic ones, the best thing to do is to wash the roller before you start this will help to remove some of the fibers. Generally I will use a new roller when sealing new plaster board or for first coats because I sand between coats this will remove and fibers that were shed. Basically this is working in the roller so it won't shed when applying final coats. Good quality rollers will shed less then some of the cheap ones.

You might mention why a lefty rolls from left to right and a righty rolls right to left. This is so when starting a new wall the roller is between you and the wall you just painted and not your body rubbing into the just painted wall. This is something many painters, like myself, probably find out the hard way!

Yes you can add some water to the paint, just make sure you don't put too much in, most manufactures say up to 10% water. A lot of people will say to have windows open for ventilation but this can also cause the paint to dry too quick depending on how much air flow there is. Normally I will close all windows when rolling then open when finished, the paint fumes don't affect me as they might some who is painting for the first time. Don't apply the paint too thin or it will also dry quickly.

Thanks for this great video. Few questions please. 1: Do you use or recommend a paint "conditioner" (Floetrol for example) or is that product just a useless sales pitch? I will be painting in November and the warmer weather will give me less working time! 2: What nap length do you recommend? I'm using water-based paints for my house. Thanks for your awesome vids, really helpful. I will be confident when painting my house thanks to you!

I am going to paint several rooms in my house soon. I was reading through a small guidebook I was given, and it suggested that I roll the paint in a 'W' pattern in order to evenly distribute it. Could you tell me how the technique shown here compares to the one I mentioned ?
@ajsbrushworksllc8348
@ajsbrushworksllc8348 4 жыл бұрын
That's a DIY technique to use, and it's horrible teaching. You always want to roll into a wet edge, such as what he did in the video. That way, you don't get a flash mark where you start and stop. Using a W method, you now have 4 to 6 wet edges that more than likely you wouldn't be able to cover before they start to dry. Using flat paint, sure, you might get away with it. Anything with a sheen, and that W will stick out underneath the top coat. Just follow what he did in the video, I'm a lefty and paint this same way, and never have an issue. Just remember, always roll INTO your wet edge.
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 3 жыл бұрын
The W is what people were taught, I don't think they really knew any other way to explain it as they are generally never tradesman who demonstrate how to do it. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

This is exactly how I’m painting but I did whje. I get close to the edge corner there I Abu paint on my roller and I have to tilt it more towards one side ! Also I’m getting lines When painting rest of the wall it’s killing me mate ! Can you recommend a roller ? Or do you recommend using the roller and stick that’s held from both ends ? As I tend to press more toward some side maybe why in getting lines
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 2 жыл бұрын
You need to apply even pressure to the roller, if you apply pressure more to one side then there is a chance you will get lines. Also a short nap can cause lines easier then a slightly longer nap like 14mm or so. Using a frame that holds the roller sleeve by both ends is also better then the single sided frame as pressure is distributed more evenly. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Hello thank you very much for the new techniques on painting .what to ask I am planning to change the color of two room from a bright color to another bright color .my question is do I need to add primer to the wall first and then to new color ,or can I just add new color to wall with out primer thanks .any answers would be good
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 9 жыл бұрын
+KGP VLOG Often bright colours need a white or grey base coat so you will need to prime/undercoat before applying top coats. If you had a bright blue and you wanted to change to a bright yellow then you may need to apply two coats of primer or undercoat to completely hide the existing blue.
@30kenton
@30kenton 9 жыл бұрын
Ok thank you very much does most new paints contains primer already mix with the paint
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 9 жыл бұрын
+KGP VLOG Keeping it short, a primer in definition is applied to a bare or unpainted surface. Its roll is to seal or bond to the surface so additional coats will stick. When re-painting a primer or undercoat is not always required when dealing with water based paints because water based paints will stick to other water based paints as long as the surface is clean. When re-painting oil based paints the surface must be sanded for the next coat to stick, undercoat is use to hide the sanding marks.
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 11 жыл бұрын
If you are using a bright orange then you should use a white undercoat first and bright colours often need an extra coat to make them look good. I'm not sure I completely follow you with the second bit but when you undercoat you need to undercoat the complete wall to ensure a uniform finish which will also ensure absorption rates to be the same. If you have cut in for the first coat and let it dry that will be fine, just make sure the final coat is done wet on wet.

When cutting in the final coat on walls can you let it dry completely before rolling without getting picture framing. Finding it impossible to keep a wet edge with cut ins. When rolling cut lines are semi drying, no good putting roller over it? Great videos by the way. Learned quite a bit off you!

Whats up man. Helpful footage for sure. I always refer back to it. 2 questions though .. when it comes to first applying roller to wall, spreading and then finally laying off the paint, how much pressure are you using on the wall .. you mentioned its light whilst laying over .. but how light? lol if you can describe em for me briefly that would be sick.
@howtopaintinfo

Andre Mason You used pressure to spread the paint then go over it lightly, for the final lay off it would be basically the weight of the roll.

So I have textured walls. I bought a 3/4 roller. Except the roller becomes very flat and doesn't seem o hold much paint after a while because the roller is so compressed. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe try to load more paint on the roll and also wet the roller before you start. Don’t forget to Like, Share and Subscribe

Its hard to say from your description but most likely your not using enough paint. As for the old paint colour showing through, this will happen on the first coat that's why its recommended to apply two coats. If you were to apply the paint thick without rolling it out it will appear to cover the existing paint colour but the overall finish won't look good. I'm using an 11 inch roller and would recommend not to use anything smaller. Maybe try a longer nap cover that holds more paint.

I love the techniques provided but your using a pro roller and most people who want to learn will only probably purchase a standard one ... In turn the finish and effort put in is greatly upped !!!!

Pro roller holds more paint and is also made of better materials. They put more paint on the wall and do it more evenly with far less splatter, also the edges to not compress like cheap rollers. I also find they are easier to clean. All in all they make for a faster and better job. A good roller costs less in the long run. I have a large lambs wool roller for plaster walls and ceilings that I bought 12 years ago and it is still as good as new. Admittedly I have only painted my 28sq house twice, but I doubt that I will need to ever buy another one. A poor workman always blames his tools. A good workman buys good tools.

So it's just the type of wool used that differs? How do I tell which is better to buy? Thanks

clive ramsbotty Not just the type of wool, the whole frame is different. It is much sturdier etc. As I said I have had mine a long time, so the best thing is to talk to a few pros in paint shops and on the job if you can. There may be now better stuff than what I have.

Very helpful video. Do you ever have a problem with the cover slowly slipping off the roller?
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 11 жыл бұрын
Firstly, if sleeve falls off you need a new frame, (it has never happened to me) and there is no way paint will get inside the sleeve when rolling, its more likely to get in when loading or dipping the roller in the paint. Rolling from left to right or right to left won't really matter. But you always cut in first, I suggest you take a closer look at your work.

Generally in warm weather paint will dry in a few hours, just look down the surface and if the paint looks dry then you can re-coat it.

Yes that is true, I can remember hitting my bum on a few wet walls over the years but here is one you will like. Many moons ago I had just finished painting this bathroom in a unit and my gf at the time was there, she was helping me pack up. I took some stuff outside and walked back into the bathroom to find her leaning over the bath to remove the drop sheets, she was supporting herself with one hand on the wet wall that she had just watched me paint.

My coat of water-based paint with Floetrol still drys faster than your paint in the vieo. For the final third coat should I add some water to the paint to further thin the paint and slow the drying down a bit?

Fardeen Ibrahim Paint wall like shown in this video, it is the way to do it with all types of finishes. Repainting the wall should get rid of any flashing or over lap marks. If they are really bad then you may need to sand them out a bit before re coating.

Thanks for all your great videos. I have a question i need help with. When i paint with eggshell (usually use Benjamine Moore Regal), when there is alot of natural light, i can see these glare lines. Wherever i start a new dip and roll into the section i just finished, i find its in that area where it creates a sort of glare line in that shows in natural light. how do you acheive a consistent, almost mirror like surface with eggshell, emilinating any glare-lines? Do you know how to avoid these? I usually 3/8" wooster pro-doo-zs. THanks!
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 3 жыл бұрын
It could be cause by not using enough paint and the section you have just finished is starting to dry so an over lap mark shows up. Or you might not be rolling far enough back in to what you have done and have left a thick section of paint. Hard to tell without seeing what you mean. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

This looks like a very efficient way to paint a room :) This might sound silly but is this any more difficult than other methods? I've never painted a room before and will be soon. I'm somewhat disabled so I'd like to avoid ladders if possible which is why I like this method so much

The advantage of a undercoat is that its not slippery like the semi gloss and will absorb more paint and give you better coverage but if you need three top coats for it to cover there is no real difference as you are still applying three coats. As for cutting in first, no offence but generally the cutting in will be seen if done after, its more noticeable with dark colours and I would say a tradesman would notice but others may not.(take a good look from different angles, then you might notice)

Yup, that's what I use. 9 inch rollers. The only time I use bigger rollers are for backrolling and block filling. Not to mention if you use a tray it's very difficult to get even paint coverage on your roller.... not to mention all the paint you slop on the floor.
