Jerry D do you need to sand the plaster before painting ?
@aol114 жыл бұрын
@@bobbobby4898 You don't sand plaster, you sand if you are drywall finishing. 2 different trades. Once plaster is applied it is said and done. It can be scraped or sanded if absolutely necessary for touch ups. But when you apply the plaster as when you need to make it perfect so you don't have to sand. Plaster application is not for the inexperienced.

@@bobbobby4898 never sand new plaster... After its had a couple of coats paint.. & when it's fully dry, You can go over the walls with a fine sand paper, Not to heavy... & your last coat of paint will look perfect..

daft question, if I aim to paint the wall a grey colour do I still just use a white matt mixed with water as a base coat?
@botany500kojak3 жыл бұрын
You need a mist coat on new plaster no matter what colour you want the wall to be in the end. So do as the video then you can paint it grey.

Did you use the same paint for all the coats till finish? Thanks
@purnp58972 жыл бұрын
Most probably not, he probably used contract matt up to 4 coats until the entire room was proud white. Then finished with a top coat, usually better quality.

what about sealing the walls with pva before the based coat loved the video.

I never seal with pva before painting. . Or rather this is a second option instead of base coat. Cheers

I never understood why people PVA the wall before painting. Have you ever tried painting over PVA splashes made by plasterers? It’s a nightmare it keeps coming through

Can I get some advice please: recently had ceilings skimmed and added some Mapei plaster primer. Since applying two coats of white emulsion I can still see the brush marks of the primer all over the ceiling. What can I do to remove this? Do I just need to keep applying paint coats until it goes?
@purnp58972 жыл бұрын
Paints too thick sounds maybe? Let it dry, sand and apply an even coat. Make sure your laying the paint off aswell as laying it on. That should smooth out areas with thicker paint.

mist coats are no good oil based primer is best or diluted pva
@raymondscott906 Жыл бұрын
Pva is a cowboy trick. why coat your walls with rubber. pva is used to help plaster to stick to surfaces. if it was meant to be used like you say why don't paint, plaster or pva manufacturers recommend it. oil based primer is no good. the alkali in the plaster eats the oil. look up saponification. if you want to finish with an oil based paint then alkali resisting primer needs to be used. again every manufacturer has a technical department and they will answer questions

Why is that fresh plaster beige instead of white??
@raymondscott906 Жыл бұрын
plaster is different colours depending on where the raw materials are found. there is also plaster of Paris that is commonly used in ornate covings. that's white

This may be a silly question, but is there a reason why the paint should be watered down and applied first? Couldn't you just apply a unwatered first coat and then the second coat?
@VikingAwayFromHome6 жыл бұрын
If the paint isn't watered down, it'll dry too quickly on top of the plaster and possibly start peeling. The watered down paint will incorporate with the plaster.
@raymondscott906 Жыл бұрын
plaster is a porous surface. full of small holes. if the paint is too thick it just lays on the top waiting for the right conditions to fall off. if you thin the paint then some of it soaks into the holes creating a bond between the two.
@alpachino468 Жыл бұрын
Makes perfect sense, thank you for explaining.
@raymondscott906 Жыл бұрын
as an add on to that. the paint he is using is pours like the plaster. this is to help the plaster continue to dry out. if the plaster is deep then this can take a few months to dry fully. when its dry if you decide to coat with a coloured vinyl matt or other paint thin the first coat slightly to again herp the bond between ports and non ports. you don't have to but 45 years experience has taught me to do this. rarely had a problem doing this
