Those collapsible shovels are not very good, their bent shape gets in the way when you try to get snow from under a standard road car. Went to visit my granny in winter, got stuck in the snow near her country house, i tried to dig myself out with exactly same shovel, after ten minutes i gave up and went to my granny by foot to ask for a real shovel. That was the best greeting ever. And after that case i bought a real shovel. An old soviet short sapper shovel (lol), but any short 3$ shovel from any gardening store will be as good, and of the same shape.

I thought some people might find useful especially if you're going to be moving your car into a cold climate for a couple weeks is, add an engine block heater to your car. and make sure your washer fluid is not specialized for removing bugs but with a very low freezing point specialized for the cold. if you're going to be driving in the snow a lot get winter tires if you're going off road or way up North, consider getting Tire chains. Glow sticks, flairs or pylons are an extra touch butt still worth getting.

A couple of bags of sand for the back of the truck or the trunk are better. Cat litter is made of clay, and when it gets wet, it gets slimy. I went through lots of winters with the 5 2WD pickups I owned. Tire chains are excellent, too. I once drove through 40" deep snow with a 2WD pickup with chains, but I had to go offroad to get around all the cars stopped dead on the highway. Personally, I think 4WD is a hell of a waste of money, except for people who live in the wilderness, deep snow country or mud country. And a manual transmission is a lot better for getting un-stuck in snow or mud than an automatic. There's a lot of unnecessary debt slavery out there for the sake of the marginal cost of auto transmissions and the 4WD that they necessitate, which can amount to 1/3 of the cost of the basic vehicle.
@greaterfleshmachine5 жыл бұрын
unfortunately the cheapest cat litters are made of clay, which will make everything SO slimy when you're trying to get traction -- just get salt. keeping in your car will give it more weight too.

Very surprised you forgot to mention having winter/rubber floor mats. This is one of the most important things because if you're constantly tracking snow into your vehicle and it's being absorbed into the carpeting in the floor, your car is going to rust very quickly underneath.

Very good tips, I could add that: 1. When going on the highway or on a high speed road, try to stay 10-20 mph under the road speed limit, speed limits on most roads are thought for normal conditions. 2. If you have a manual/semiautomatic gearbox, it's a good idea to use higher gears than usual so you have less chances to lose grip on the traction wheels, also try to be more gentle with the throttle (1000 rpm to 2500 rpm on diesel and 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm on gasoline). 3. Be as gentle as posible with braking and the stearing, ABS could not work at all if there is ice or snow on the road, causing the wheels to lock and the car to slide. 4. If you lose control of the vehicle at low speeds (under about 30-40 mph) do not use the brakes to regain control, it's best to lower a gear engaging the clutch the shortest amounth of time possible and try to control the slide with the stearing wheel, in some cases giving it a bit of throttle can also help, but I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't done it before. These tips are also usefull on heavy rain to avoid aquaplaning.
@InternetDude10 жыл бұрын
Here's a tip you didn't mention. If stuck, you can use your floor mats, put them under the powered wheels to get grip (hopefully). A bigger shovel is a good idea if you have the room. A blanket is also a good idea. #1 tip though is slow the f**k down and drive defensively.

LuxKadafi It's hard to justify a set of snow tires if you live in a region that only gets 1 or 2 weeks of snow/ice. I've driven on ice in a major metropolitan area with no snow tires. I never got stuck and even helped rescue other cars. If I lived up north though, I would definitely have snow tires on a separate set of rims.
@mikeike98999 жыл бұрын
+bonfe roni it's not just about snow and ice. The cold could make summer or all season tires harder which means less grip and longer stopping distances. A winter tire is safer because of a softer compound of rubber which could grip the road with the same "stickiness" at 15 degrees as a summer tire at 70 degrees. Think safe, stay safe, and be safe. Good luck if you are getting some.

one tip from me if you have better tires use them dont be that guy going out in a snowstorm with slicks bad idea most times you can go to wallmart and get a good set of at tires for around $250 and if you have the money get very good tires and use them for winter only couple more tips 1. if you have locking diffs use them if you are stuck they might give you a better hope of getting unstuck easily 2. open diffs? if you are stuck put you foot on the gas partially look on ur spedometer around 10-25 keep it there then pull the emergency brake rapidly while still having the foot on the gas 3. if you have a truck what i would do is put some weight in the back of the bed that helps with traction 4. if you have a 4wd or awd vehicle make sure to use it that a 2wd car or truck 5. if you are stuck and you have rubber floor mats put them under your tires they help give extra traction 6. only use 4x4 low if needed 7. if you vehicle is an automatic put it in 1 or 2 if you are stuck to give you lower gear ratios 8. use your hazzard lights if you are stuck as well if you are going slowly while in a blizzard 9. some times traction control is getting in your way of getting unstuck or even getting you stuck turn it off if you are stuck 10. buckle up and be safe all of this is coming from a off road master (not really a master but very good at it)

Chrisfix, I want to thank you so much for putting your experience on KZbin. You are super clear and extremely informative. Long story short, I took my Jeep Liberty 2012, my only vehicle, the vehicle that I rely on completely to get me to where I need to go and back (So much to be said, If you only knew what I had to do just to get to work before my Jeep). I took my Jeep to the dealer for an oil change and tire rotation. After receiving my Jeep and going home, the very next day I opened the hood ..... only to find, "FOOD" in my engine bay. I was insanely furious couldn't speak needed to calm myself so decided to take it for a ride. When starting the Jeep I got a thick WHITE SMOKE from the exhaust. At that point, I decided I would never take my hard earned Jeep back to the dealership. I would do the work myself. I know nothing about cars, until I came across your clear and concise videos. Thank you for them. I've seen some other videos and I really appreciate them. But none are as easy to digest as yours. I bought tools, hydraulic jack, floor jacks, chocks, breaking bar, Torck wrench, ratchets and still getting new tools. I can easily say so much more but I don't want this to get mushy. So, Thank you again for everything. This is a testament as to the type of person you are. Also if possible, having problem with my AC. My front fan doesn't move and I get no air movement what so ever. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You again. Mike Evans

That's when things go awry. 2. 4/all wheel drive does not mean 4/all wheel stop. Most cars I see in the ditch are 4WD/AWD. 3. Make sure your coolant/antifreeze is full and properly mixed, and that your fluids are topped off and the belts & hoses are in good shape. 4. Use good tires. 5. Put bags of gravel, concrete blocks, or some kind of weight in the bed of your pickup truck 6. When in doubt, stay home. 7. Keep a towing company in your phone, if you don't have some kind of a roadside assistance service (AAA, etc.). 8. Plan for the weather as best as you can. In Michigan, it changes every 20 minutes. 🤣 Be safe, everyone. I love your channel, dude!

The candles can make a very large difference when the space is small. Also the stove is great because if you're water freezes or there is really a high volume of snow you can use it for water. I recently got a small jumper pack which acts as a power bank as well. If the snow is blowing in sideways it can cover your lights enough to obstruct them completely and they should be cleared. Many people do not push the snow off their car as you suggest.

Abso-freaking-lutely! When my kids were learning how to drive, I made a point of taking them to huge, empty parking lots during blizzards so that they could play around with throwing the car into a skid and recovering from it. Again and again and again. Though, I have to admit that, after about a half hour of that, it degenerated into doing lots of donuts. Still, learning experiences should be fun. -- Refresher courses are, of course, helpful, for all of us (and a few donuts).

The biggest misconception is people think that 4x4 vehicles are really good in the snow, but the truth is its all about tyre choice. Yes, it would help if you get stuck, but that 4x4 wouldn’t do anything about cornering, braking and regaining traction once you lost it.

Also make sure you have good tires. I like to lower the psi in my tire during a snow storm. Give yourself space, & no hard braking.
@chrisfix10 жыл бұрын
Jose Lozano Good tires are important and that is a great tip. You actually dont want to lower tire pressure. The bigger footprint is good for ice but bad for snow (think snow shoes). If you get stuck or have a lot of ice, then lowering the pressure is good, but for powered snow, you want normal pressure.
@joselozano052810 жыл бұрын

Also check: heaters and defrosters, coolant mix and level (your heater relys on that), tread depth, have your battery checked before the cold (many parts stores do this for free) and be familiar with your vehicle's functions such as traction control. Don't rely on it always behaving as it's supposed to.

Honestly, the #1 tip for driving in cold weather is knowing the ins and outs of how your car drives. Find some empty or abandoned space when it's snowy, if possible, and get acquainted with how it handles and what to do when it starts understeering or oversteering. If you can control your car like it's an extension of yourself, then you'll be far less likely to wind up in the ditch. Remember: Studded tires *are not* required for cold weather driving. As long as you can handle your car you'll be just fine.

Some locations require traction devices such as a mountain pass. I keep a set of Diamond Tire Chains in my Toyota car just in case I get stranded in snow or ice as road conditions change. You would be amazed how an old FWD car will go in bad weather with deluxe tire chains and some common sense.

All terrain tires are the best
@Enjay807 жыл бұрын
Eduard Kuiper all terrain tires are made of a rubber that turns too hard to grip when the weather gets cold, around 7C. Winter tires are made of a much softer rubber that will remain flexible even in -30C... Canadian winter driver here: if you live somewhere where it snows 14 feet and over per winter, specific tires are mandatory...
@tarrencebrooks50048 жыл бұрын
tire pressure. Lower tire pressure gives you a wider tire print which normally gives you more traction
@socialjusticewarrior96018 жыл бұрын
Don't lower it too much because the colder it is, the more your tires will contract. so when it gets warmer, you will have some really low psi numbers
@132jole8 жыл бұрын

careful with this, if you lower it enough, you can get a concave bulge in your tires that DECREASES the contact patch. www.totalmotorcycle.com/maintenances/photos/tire-inflation.gif
