How to Repaint a Wood Door

A good way to easily restore painted hardware would be to boil the parts in water with baking soda. Once the parts have cooled, scrape any major pieces of paint off with a flat head screwdriver. (Use a smaller one in the grooves) then, use 0000 steel wool and WD-40 to polish the hardware up a bit. At this point, you can decide if using brass polish is necessary. If there is still some shine or sign of brass under the grime, it may be worth it. But if the metal has turned grey or black (A.K.A. The finish wore off) then its probably not worth it. Finally wash with dish soap and water. This applies to hinges, old mortise locks, doorknobs and even screws. Its never a good idea to paint these parts (especially the hinges and doorknobs and lock) because it can gum up the mechanism and make it harder to use. Also, the original finish of antique hardware can add an equal if not better contrast to the finish of your door. Just a tip!

Robin Nichols He/She wouldn’t have painted it. Some ppl see it as sacrileges or something to paint wood 😂 even tho it quite literally protects it for a very long time, is completely reversible & does not damage the wood. Don’t ask me why some ppl find it so damning, but I personally don’t get any joy or pleasure from everything in my home being varying shades of brown.🤮🚪🙅‍♀️🎨👩‍🎨 ⬜️ Tada! Lmao ;)

It would have taken a lot more work in stripping (especially the inner corners of the recessed part) to get the door to be stain grade again.

Ashley Falcon I would have painted it. I do it on a daily basis. Not sure why you would assume I wouldn’t. But you know what they say about assumption. I complimented him on his great prep but there is an order to painting a door and also applying paint so heavily it runs down the door immediately is not the way to do it. The chap did an amazing job prepping the surface, a neater paint job would have shown his efforts off better.

Try using the heat gun until it bubbles. Then let it cool. Paint flakes right off. Very easy!

Question: How to know if the older paint does not contain lead. I would like to do some restoration of my inner and outer doors. But I don't want to breathe lead doing it.

you can get a test kit, if your house is pre 1970, you have very high chances, especially in the older coats of paint, the first two may be ok.

I wanted to try this method, there are some paint strippers that you can use outside, I usually cover the door with plastic when using these chemicals so you can have a better effect. Using chemical strippers is really effective if you are ok with the fumes, you also need to let the stripper sit for between a few hours and a day.

My idea was to make another video using a paint stripper but never filmed it, it works great you just need to cover the stripper with plastic and it peels off like soft butter. You get a headache after a few doors so doing it outside is not a bad idea 😁.

@@atroche1978 I never had issues but that does not mean anything. The stripper only acts on the paint, never seen any interaction with the wood, you usually paint cheap wood like pine. When painting after stripping also no issues, just let it evaporate and you are good to go

​@@aobeso25 If it's a latex paint then you can use either a latex or oil-based primer. However, if it's an oil based paint, then do NOT use a latex primer__use an oil based one. I usually use KILZ primer on my bare wood projects.

yes, but depending how the previous paint job was done it could peel off later, in my case it was peeling so I had to strip it

In my case I had several reasons. The door's house and the prep locations are not the same. I had 24hrs to repaint it so painting one side waiting for that side to dry and then do the other side was simply not an option if I wanted to be done in one day and in my case I did not want to transport a wet painted door.

It is an excellent video for the high energy do it yourselfer...But frankly I would find it much better to simply buy a new door. Now I would no doubt put it in myself and even paint a wooden one myself....But not all that scraping, etc.....And chemicals are so damn harsh for this sort of stripping. But again, For what it is, This video is very well done.
