would a blending hammer do for the outer skin rather than a tap down?

Question: About what surface temp are you looking for when heating the paint? 150 degrees fahrenheit?
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I don't use a temperature gauge, I just warm it up by touch, I get into a flow when I am working of heating and pushing, so having another gadget to test the heat of the panel would slow me down and get in the way. I get the surface about as hot as it would get on a hot summers day. 😎

Well done, does the softened paint dent when hammering on it?
@1st_track_dents6 жыл бұрын
Hi, the paint is softened slightly when heated, but that is when the pushing from behind is done to prevent the paint cracking. When tapping down the high areas on the face of the panel I make sure the panel is cold again. The tap down used is made from Nylon/rubber so it wont make any marks on the panel. The only time it will make marks is if there is any filler/bondo lurking under the paint!

How would you fix a door that was bent out at the bottom, like if someone shut a seatbelt in it? Someone’s done that to my car on both sides. The tops line up but the bottom rear corners stick out about a cm.
@1st_track_dents3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. It's quite easy to twist the frame of the door, if this is the case it may need to go to a bodyshop to be twisted back, however if it is just an outward crease at the bottom, a good PDR tech should be able to fix that for you 👍
@axa.axa.5 жыл бұрын
how hot do you need to heat the paint? A laser thermostat is cheap and would help you get consistent results
@1st_track_dents5 жыл бұрын
The panel doesn't need to get that hot, just as hot as the paint would get on a hot summers day, yes there are laser thermostats that you can use, but I just know how long I have to heat it from years of experience :-)

what is the heatgun temperature you set for that?
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
I have never measured the temperature of the panel, I just warm the panel up so that it is very warm but not too hot to touch. It is just to keep the paint flexible so that it won't crack or split. On a hot summers day I don't heat the panel at all as the panel if in the sun, is usually warm enough. 👍

Thank you for sharing. I can watch a skilled craftsman working at their trade for hours. You are highly skilled at PDR, but your ability to instruct others is exceptional! It would be an honor to learn under your tutelage. Do you offer personal training? It would be worth a trip across the pond to learn from one of the best.
@1st_track_dents2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Greg, it's really nice to receive positive comments such as this, so I really appreciate it 😉 I don't offer any personal training as It would be quite difficult to do as I work alone. If I had a nice dry workshop maybe it would work but workshops are expensive here. You are in good hands in the USA though as there are some amazing PDR tech's over there who I look up to. 👍👍👍

is a 1000 watt hair dryer enough to do the heating? my car door is a conventional one, how to repair a dent on the edge of the hinge side? Thanks
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
A hot air gun would be better, a bent edge on the hinge side would be more difficult but not impossible, you just need to use a slide hammer with a thin lip on it with some masking tape to pull the edge up and then use your tap downs. 👍

Awesome video! It's done up perfect. What's the long term solution for the little paint unevenness at the edge?
@1st_track_dents5 жыл бұрын
Any paint unevenness at the edge can be flattened down and polished, but if you do this too much you are in danger of taking the natural orange peel texture of the paint away and making the repair look very obvious.

@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can definitely use the same process, just remember to go slowly, rather than trying to hammer the damage out in just a few blows. 👍
@canatolakhoemini67282 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but it's very difficult hammering down the highs. Best way is to start one end to the other over and over and if you have them, chase the highs at the end.

What is the differance between using a rubber or a nylon tip knockdown?
@1st_track_dents4 жыл бұрын
The rubber tip is just a bit more gentle and is good to start with to rough an edge out, whereas the nylon tip is harder and will make damage if you are not careful, so you need to be a bit more precise with your hits:-)

Hi Edward, you would just need to get yourself an interchangeable Aluminium knockdown which will take a rubber or Nylon tip, and a standard nylon knock down. These can all be purchased from a good PDR retailer for example pdrprotools.co.uk or TDN tools here in the UK. You will also need some basic training if you haven't get that already as it can be a very tricky repair to get right. All the best:-)
