IMPORTANT TIP - the H11 bulbs come with an orange polyurethane washer at the base of the bulb. This creates a seal when you put the bulb into the socket. When you take the old bulb out this washer often sticks in the socket and doesn't come out with the bulb. That makes it impossible to get the new bulb to seat and twist-click into the socket. MAKE SURE THE OLD WASHER COMES OUT WITH THE OLD BULB OR REACH IN AND TAKE IT OUT BY HAND !! BTW - great video ... short, well scripted and very accurate.

It's real hard not touching the bulb when I can only get one hand in there. I recommend putting the new bulb in, then attach the cable. I heard you don't touch the bulb is because the oil from your hands will burn off and fog the lens. Probably won't have that problem with the LED bulbs.

Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!!! We've been driving around about 3 weeks with a new bulb in the vehicle without knowing how to change it. The auto parts store where it was purchased didn't have a clue. I had a feeling I would find it on KZbin and when I saw rhe length of your video, you were my first choice! All videos should be like this (straight to the point) without all the unnecessary stuff. You have another new subscriber. Now can you do a video on how to stop the oil consumption of these SUV's?
@GarageKing2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much !!!! I appreciate the great comment. With how to videos on things like this, brakes, and other maintenance I try to do the videos as short as I can because when I search for things I'm the same way :) I don't want to hear someone rambling on forever. As for the oil consumption its a major issue on these vehicles, and there are there are lawsuits against GM in Canada (not sure about other countries) The problem seems to stem from the design in the PCV system where things get plugged up. To keep the PCV operating at full capacity you have to keep the oil vapours that circulate in all gasoline engines as clean as possible. I think to fix it, its a bigger job, as you would have to take the intake manifold off and clean everything, and then install something like a catch can to prevent it from happening again (because it's going to happen again, it's in the design of the engine) While I have not installed one on the Terrian, I have put catch cans on a lot of other vehicles and they purpose of them is too keep oil out of the intake manifold. Some vehicles are worse than others for oil consumption so they are not needed for all engines, but I find the good quality ones do work. I'm a licensed mechanic so I have seen quite a bit, and this KZbin channel is a hobby for me where I can make some cool videos :) The terrain actually belongs to my friend so if she brings it to me for oil consumption I would make a quick video on it for sure !!! I do have more Terrain footage, I just have to edit and upload, and I like to vary the vehicles every week. Here is a shorter video on catch cans for your general knowledge kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIKoYqR7qbVrmrM Thanks again !!! GK

@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
Thanks and I appreciate the comment. The car was my friends car. If I remember correctly you can get the high beams out, you just have to reach a bit more, but it can be done the same way. OK - edit, I just watched the vid, and I'm remembering, I think you can get to the high beam with a little more twisting. If you have at least one high beam working make sure to turn it for a check to locate the right bulb, and then turn off, just so you know you are replacing the right bulb.

My son has a 16’ Terrain, he was wanting some brighter bulbs, still has oem. It doesn’t have the access on the inner fender, I’m guessing just remove inner fender would be the same difference. I think they did away with the access maybe 15’ or 16’ model? They just made it more difficult when they did that, probably in hopes that you would take it to their “stealership” to get it done. We have an 18’ Acadia and a Sierra, both of those are so simple to replace headlight lamps, just open the hood and nothing in the way.
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
Hey Thanks for the comment. Yup I have heard from a few others that GM did away with the access hole in the newer years. Personally I think it was to save a few dollars per vehicle. You have a good idea, and I think the same, if it were me I would try with the inner fender 1st, I would think that's a lot easier than taking off the front bumper !!!

I learned that after the video as some commenters came forward and told me. Its too bad that GM changed the design, but I did hear from some others that attempted your style and they said they were able to get to the light by loosening and pulling back the inner fender which is much easier than the bumper. I can't confirm as I never tried it, but figured I would let you know.

Wow! I wonder if it is this simple for all vehicles! Great tutorial! I think even I could handle this! I knew about not handling the new bulbs. I think it is because the oil on your fingers can cause the bulb to blow when it heats up... is that correct?
@GarageKing3 жыл бұрын
Most are pretty simple. A lot of the headlight changing vids on KZbin are like 10min, so I wanted to take a different approach and see how a quick one would do. Plus you know its good science as eventually the results of different tests get shared on MoneyTree. You are right its the oil from your fingers that cause the bulb to blow. These bulbs get super hot and any oil on them will boil and cause a variation in temperature in the bulb and the unequal temp causes them to blow. Very important not to touch the glass. Thanks for the great comment and happy Friday to you :)

I have heard that some do not have the panel and I have no idea why GM would have removed such a great feature. Sorry yours does not have the panel, that does suck…..

Not sure to be honest with you, they are located higher so I'm not sure if you can reach them. Its an easy check if you take off the cover to see. I would do it, but it was my friends vehicle so I don't have it here.

Good to know, thanks for letting me know. I thought they were all the same, due to the same generation. I do wonder, do you have a special edition or something? I'm also wondering if some 15's have the access panel and some don't?

I have a 2015 Terrain and there is no such access hole, nor is it possible to loosen the number as in other videos. Fortunately, I discovered that if you loosen the wheel well cover and are forceful enough you can bend it down far enough to reach in to the bulb cover.

Cheers, quick and simple! What about changing the High Beams?
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
Hey there, I haven't done the high beams, but if you look close in the video, you can see another cover that looks exactly like the one I took out for the low beams. I think it can be done by hand. It's going to be tighter, but it looks doable.

I don’t have that bolt do I have to remove a cover over it?
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
Oh boy, you got the hard one. You may have to pull the front bumper back to get in there. If I remember correctly you may be able to get to one side, but the other side is pretty hard.

My jaw dropped. When I picked up my bulb the owner of the parts store made a comment that if it's anything like his Terrain, I'll have to take half the engine apart to access the bulb. I checked my engine in the parking lot on and sure enough, it was bolted and inaccessible without tools I don't have with me. Looked under the wheel well and 🤯

Sorry to hear that. I did receive a few comments where people said they didn't have the access hole. I'm not sure exactly when GM stopped making the hole, or if it was just for certain models.

You could show how you accessed the light to begin with. Too close-in to actually see where to go. Thanks for the video even still. It certainly helped once I knew I had to go under the wheel well. Regards…

Why I can’t get my cover off to get to the low beam. I have been twisting and turning for about 10 mins
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
Once you take out that torx screw, you have to turn counter clockwise, and then it should release. My guess is there is a bunch of crud in there. You have to make sure to line up the teeth when you unscrew so you can pull the cover off. If you go a bit too far then the teeth are not lined up to come out.
@darrellegriffin2882 Жыл бұрын
How would you remove a stripped screw from it?
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
Hey there, if you are talking about the torx screws there are two ways. You take a cut off wheel (faster) or a hacksaw blade (slower) and file a slot in it. Then turn it with a flat head screwdriver. You can wedge a very thin tool under it when you are turning it and that will help when you turn it (in case its stripped into the receiving female end. Or you could take some vise grips, or good pliers, grab the head and twist. The wedge tool (if it turns but does not come out) would be something like this amzn.to/3CPg8dX Sorry about the late reply, just seeing your message now.
