How to replace the anti-roll bar drop links on a Renault Zoe

This video shows you how to replace the drop links (also called stabiliser bars or anti-roll bar/sway bar links) on a Renault Zoe.
The original Renault part is no. 551107916R and currently costs £104.50 inc VAT.
There are plenty of cheaper alternatives available. I've seen unbranded ones for as little as £8.50 for a pair. I used Febi Bilstein part no. 21810 at £18.50 per pair from www.bestpartstore.co.uk .
This website is actually a German based company, so items do take a week to arrive (to the UK), but they are cheap and always have a discount code available.

Beautifully clear and concise and looks an easy fix. Couldn't quite see what failure had actually taken place? It had just become "sloppy" in some way or distorted? The makers list price is quite outrageous for such a simple component and as to omitting the locking nuts, adding insult to injury come to mind. Trouble is, if an authorised dealer does any replacements, these are the rip off costs that the garage will be blamed for!

Failure is just wear in the ball joints, which causes knocking. Wear felt really quite small, but its amplified when on the car.

On older cars, they're often are rusted and need the bolts cutting with an angle grinder.

I would also add, after replacing the drop links in a few Zoe's now, you may find that the drop link bolt/stud could be rusted and the allen key doesn't hold it, If that's the case, you'll need an angle grinder with a cutting blade and cut the bolt off. It's all pretty easy if you have tools.

My droplinks have to be replaced today. Hyundai i30, 14 years old, 80k miles on the clock and only needing it changed now. Can't complain at that.

Good video, thanks. Does make you wonder why dealers insist upon locking out the 400v battery for the job, presumably 'elf and safety'. Obviously the suspension is on full droop there but it does strike me that the ABS wire is under fairly significant tension; we'll see if those start being a problem in the next few years.

Great when allen hole isn't completely rusted/rounded. Unfortunately if that is the case it looks like angle grinder is the only solution.

Or stick a pair of mull grips on the inside and buzz the old ones off with an impact gun

I just sits this on my zoe and it's seems to have fixed the annoying knocking sound even though the one I took of looked fine

Yes they may look and feel fine, but a tiny amount of play is amplified when fitted.

Fantastic vid. How do I determine if my problem is the droplinks and not the ball joints or another part of the suspension?

If its the first suspension work on your car, then I can almost guarantee its the droplinks. They are the first things to wear out. But to find suspension wear, you need to lift the car up and lever the parts with a long bar and feel for play on the wheels.

The Zoe is no different to any other vehicle. You'll see a pinch weld on the sills and marks to show where the jacking points are.

Hi I tried doing this but the bloody Allen key bit has lost its shape and now I can’t undo the bolt half way through so it’s lose what is the best size angle grinder to get in there as space is tight in there thanks

I use a 115mm grinder but sometimes a larger one actually works better as the cutting disk has a deeper cutting depth which makes it easier. So I would say, any size grinder should do the job.

@@pally21 Just have both sides jacked up with the front wheels hanging, then there's no pressure on the anti-roll bar.
