How to replace your Landcruiser 200 intercooler | UPGRADE to a high flow unit | Thermo fan goodness!

My factory intercooler developed a split in it, so rather than just replace it with something that will likely break again, I decided to ugprade!
This is a step by step guide to removing and replacing the intercooler, also showing the thermo fan upgrade.

The change over intercooler is a great idea not so sold on the fans, have seen test done on standard intercooler with fans and the figures don't justify fitting them,might be different with that intercooler. Myself l have found that the standard setup doesn't loose power in most slow moving situations because the motor is not revving that hard and the temps come down very quickly once a little pace is achieved. Would be interesting to see some real world testing done with that after market intercooler.

Good point. I was sold on the fact they help recovery after a sustained high load, getting AIT back down as quick as possible. I think a bonnet scoop would help all the same, but I thought I would give the fans a try, since I can always remove them if I don't think they provide any help. I defer to the knowledge of John from Street Quick Performance, who highly recommended the fans. Experience down the track will prove this correct or otherwise.

I tow with my LC200 and on long steep grades (like Brown Mountain and Kings Highway both crossing the Great Divide in NSW) I'm all good until I catch up to slow vehicles ... in summer. Once I slow down I get a massive engine power drop. I'm only;y just able to creap above walking pace. Eventually once the speed increases the engine gets back to normal. But its quite a while to get it back up to speed for that to happen. I'm running an ARB bar too which apparently affects the air intake. I'm thinking of adding the fans to try to resolve this situation.

All I gotta say is take 10mins to remove the windscreen cowl . Remove wipers, remove side guard inner plastics left and right side, 3 slide clips making sure to be pushing towards the front and applying downwards pressure , 2 plastic Philips screws windscreen end, 2 clips at the front of inner guard headlight end of plastics both sides push release clip , then unclip the cowl, than thank me later , intercooler upgrade completed in under 1hr for a complete Amateur with this method 30min for a pro . No knuckle needed no need for stressing out and fiddling with bolts . Just complete rear electrical plugs and mount bolt access.

Great video… My 200 has been tuned by SQP by the previous owner and have been impressed. I’ve also noted my intercooler has been leaking so it’s time for this upgrade. Thanks for the tutorial. PS - I’m always surprised you don’t get more views on your channel since your content is very informative. Just like you, I’ve moved up from the Prado so have learned so much from ya. Hey Graham, good to hear from you mate. I've been very happy with it so far, no complaints. I have found that I get lower temps with the thermo fans when low speed 4WDing, and they really help with temp recovery after working the engine hard. Definitely recommend the upgrade.

Hey Glenn, sorry for the late reply mate, but thanks for getting on board! I haven't done many trips lately that require getting the engine hot, but I have noticed that the Intercooler outlet temps as read from a OBD2 reader seem to plateau much quicker now at highway speeds. I'll keep testing and watching the data going forward though, and let you know if I find anything interesting. Cheers!

Hi Tom, sorry for the late reply! No I haven't collected any conclusive log data from the fans as of yet. However I would encourage you to look up XploringOz on KZbin, as he has compiled some interesting data from his experience with thermo fans on his 200 series.

Hey mate, I got it from the fuse box using a fuse Tap. Just had to use a test light to find a switched circuit

I just checked and I actually used an unused relay location closest to the guard. I used a blade terminal to tap the socket closest to the guard. Message me on Instagram if you need a picture
