Hello! Do you ever have to worry about humid hides getting moldy? Or do you have to change the moss out daily to stop mold growth if it occurs? Im a little worried it will become a mold breeding ground in my tanks, or does this not occur? I've never used humid hides before, but wanted to make some for my reptile buddies, since college starts back up and I won't be able to mist down tanks as often! Awesome video too, thank you for all the information!!

Using something like sphagnum moss that is meant to stay moist, typically is pretty mold resistant. The moss tends to break down far sooner than any mold growth. Some people prefer to use something like paper towels in their humid hides, but it does tend mold under long term high humidity.

@@TyeDyedIguana this is great information, thank you! I will be using some sphagnum moss then!

What kind of reptiles do you have?
@ChickenScratch-Feathers3 ай бұрын
@@Gamergirl-172 Green anoles, and 2 crested geckos. I have live plants in their tanks, with dirt floors. But I would still love to add a humid hide. I have just been setting an alarm on my phone to make sure I mist daily.

Is there an alternative you could use instead of Sphagnum moss?
@TyeDyedIguana Жыл бұрын
Sphagnum moss is generally the best choice. It lasts quite a while, is easy to replace, it's lightweight and fluffy, and doesn't mold when wet.

a gecko that will eat their shed and accidently eat the moss will it hurt the gecko
@TyeDyedIguana3 ай бұрын
Excellent question! Keeping your humid hide humid, will help to keep the moss compact. This helps minimize risk of consumption. Dry moss tends to be a lot fluffier, which makes it get in the way (and not very beneficial for humidity 😖) Most geckos are pulling the skin from their own bodies, instead of lunging and biting, like they would when hunting for crickets. If your gecko is an ambitious shed destroyer or hunter alike, another option is to use a humidity holding dirt-like substrate. Such as Zoomed's Reptisoil or Zilla's Jungle Mix. With this substrate, we would recommend stirring it a few times a month, to help aerate it. This will help keep it from getting stagnant or too moist. We hope this helped!
