I have this on my 2022 Avalon. The problem with using the iPhone for navigation is it lags. I've noticed that when driving with Apple Maps or Waze it will show me further behind my actual location. Also, these map systems take over control of Zoom. Not allowing you to have the zoom level that you want. The Toyota factory navigation system is vastly superior to what you can get through your iPhone and CarPlay. Also, when using your phone for navigation it will be dependent upon a cellular connection. Factory navigation does not have this limitation. The Toyota factory navigation system does have one dangerous aspect. It will not allow the PASSENGER to type in an address while the vehicle is in motion. The voice recognition is typically unreliable. This requires the driver to do additional, unnecessary maneuvering in order to get the car in Park. Then you can type in your address and maneuver your way back on the freeway. Third-party overrides exist to eliminate this and make your car safer. But NEVER type in an address yourself, ONLY the passenger should do this. The music aspects of Apple CarPlay are terrific.

Yeah I was pretty surprised when it only worked wired. All my other cars that ever had it were wireless. Wired was never a step in the evolution. Seems like it would have taken more time, effort, and money to get it working only when plugged in.

I just got my Sienna 2024 yesterday. There are 2 major problems with the CarPlay/USB feature: There's only one USB port for DATA, so I can't plug in a USB stick for music playback and iPhone for CarPlay at the same time. Once the phone is plugged in for CarPlay, the Bluetooth feature will cut off. So, I can't connect another phone or music player for music source either. Theoretically, this should be fixable with an upgrade to wireless CarPlay. And you should have hardware ready, since the car comes with Wi-Fi and BT chips, which are the essentials for Wireless CarPlay

This was the only slight disappointment after purchasing a used 2019 Avalon Limited hybrid. I was, "Really? It has to be connected to a physical cord for CarPlay to work?" My 2018 BMW 640i GC connects wirelessly and automatically as soon as I fire her up. Come on Toyota, make an update where it can work wirelessly.

I have 21 limited tacoma and have carplay issues like crazy. It constantly disconnects and the podcast app wont even work half the time. The only fix is to turn the truck completely off then back on…. Super annoying. Not sure if its toyota thing or apple but its REALLY frustrating after paying 47k for truck!

I just purchased a used 2016 XLE Prem Hybrid and Carplay does not display when iphone plugged in. in fact both Google maps and Apple maps try to output to bluetooth when connected in car, so they don't work at all unless bluetooth is selected as device. I bought a 2021 Toyota Highlander but the problem I am having is that it turns off every hour. I would like to know if through the application it can be deconfigured so that it does not turn off every hour. I was at the Toyota mechanic service and They don't know how to deactivate it and the only thing they told me is that the car comes like this from the factory. @@toyotausa hey I did and for 3-4 hours we tried everything and still nothing. Only my phone is acting like this and I even updated my phone at the dealership. The technician phone and other mechanics iPhones worked. We tried 4 other phones. In another friend of mines car my phone works but I have done everything possible to make car play work and it has not unfortunately. It randomly started a week ago and now it goes on and off for CarPlay.
