A very simple explanation. The previous method i used was from some dumb guide and basically told me to: pick random shims, full assemble, listen to how it sounds, disassemble, change shims reassemble listen again. Boy am i happy to have found that it can be much simpler

Test bevel and pinion play with flat head screw driver in that window. The last time I worked on an ICS split gearbox, the top half was warped so I had to put more shims on the spur because it would grind the top half shell. Should always check the tappet plate and piston shimming with the sector.

Personally, I start with bevel gear. In some replicas you need to fit this gear well with the engine. Sometimes it has to be quite high which forces the other gears to be raised.

my gearbox and motor are very whiney and the wiring battery and motor are all getting very hot after a short use (little more than a high cap mag). Does this issue stem from bad shiming or is this a different problem?

After you adjusted the height for bevel to match with pinion gear, dont you have to readjust the height of spur gear for the new bevel gear height?

It varies from gearbox to gearbox. Shimming from the factory tends to be a bit loose. If you get into tuning your airsoft gun, shimming is its own art form.

you didn't shim bevel to pinion and testing the shimming under no load is very misleading you won't know the true sound until its under load

Can the ics split gearbox fit into other guns or do you have to mod them?

Leung Martin bevel to pinon is vastly superior, as it optimizes bevel/pinion contact, which this method doesn't.
